Just want to say thank you. I am 600 miles from home with a camper on the truck and pulling a trailer. I stopped at the Salton Sea in California to go kayaking at sunset and afterwards the truck would crank but no start. I found your video and went through the list. The Injector Pressure Regulator coil measured at 400k ohms and it should be about 10 ohms. I slept right there and this morning I used my dual sport motorcycle to go to Napa, 22 miles away. They had a new Napa brand IPR in stock (for the bargain price of only $360). I swapped in the new coil and she started right up. I'm about to chooch home but had to thank you first.

Clint, I used reverse Physcalogy on the wife to get the approval to fix up my 2000 F-250 Ole Big Blue... told her the old truck, which I love, needed $5 grand in service work, of course I got a NO!... So I brought home a 2022 F-250 on a test drive and she seen the $84K price tag and said 'Take it back and fix your old dam truck :) Money problem solved 😎

@@richardc7721 Yeah, my wife's likes her old stuff too... guess after 36 years of marriage I'm a Keeper :) She hates car or truck payments and, well Big Blue is paid off. I actually drove a 1971 2 door LTD from 1984 till 1998! I also back in the Day, drove OTR with Real trucks last one was 1978 Peterbuit 379 w/ 440 Cummins and an 18 speed, What we used to call a 'Large Car' :) The 99' to 02' 7.3 Super Duty is the Best truck made! 1968 to 1972 F-Series is hard to beat! SDs Kinda pain to work on which is rare if you take care them. I got International A/C injectors installed in 2003 with all Banks parts, intercooler, strait thru exhaust... and that increased my fuel mileage from 12 to 18mpgs! All these diesels with emissions-DEF crap takes the life out of very expensive motors.

@@danielmcqueen1024 it sure has. We had a 2012 F350 6.7. Gave good service until 2020 when fuel issues took out the CP4 pump and injectors. $13,000 90 days later went again. Got rid of it. Now I have a 2002 F450 7.3. Wife's is a 2000 7.3 Best and biggest diesel engine put in a pu from the factory. Nobody makes Better than Banks.

@@richardc7721 Sorry to hear the issues with the 2012! That sucks... The 6.7 is a great motor... only if it's been EGR Deleted! And always have a good source of Diesel. I have always used Cumins Power Service to keep the fuel system clean as well as a good Cetane booster! So who has the Lariat trim?? The Wife or on the F450?? Mine is a F-250 7.3 4X4 Lariat that I do all of the work on, grew up in the trucking business so I started working in the shop at age of 10 as a Gofer and worked my way up! Drove for 16 years and quit to be home to watch my children grow-up. So I do all my own work on my trucks and cars... nobody can find an good shop to trust! I bought a 97 that supposedly ran out of fuel and sat for many years as it was running and died, started back up and went a block and never ran again. When I got it. I put new batteries in it, was cranking it over to get fuel up and the IDM blew up so I bought another one, ran the scanner on it and the injectors cycled. The hvop reservoir was empty so I filled it up and it drained immediately, I'm not getting oil into reservoir from lpop even after cranking several times, haven't checked the check valve yet but suspect injectors might need rebuilt one I get oil into the hvop. Your videos are a great source of information as I'm an ASE Master tech, not real familiar with the 7.3 other than is over built for passenger trucks. Mine has 275000 miles on it and going to get a million more out of it.

2 years ago I ran TS6 chip with custom tunes for my BTS transmission. Which made it a completely better truck. But I had a problem with it on a intermittent issue which felt like dropping 1/2 the cylinders. I had previously had the L. Valve cover off and fixed a bad plug connection so I was familiar with that issue. Being in south texas for the winter I found a old farm shop that was able to read the 7.3 codes. It took a while but after removing the chip the problem was gone along with the needed HP to pull our 5th wheel. BTS programed a new chip and sent it to me at no charge . Before heading south i decided to replace the valve cover gaskets and wire harness this year . Even though the truck was running good . The harness plug was loose under the R. valve . And also replaced the glow plugs. Money well spent. You talked about replace all the sensors, I wish some reputable business had a package with all the sensors at a reasonable price. I've replaced the ICP sensor so I know they are expensive. On a 01 7.3 ,186k miles. Thanks again for the great info.

Oh hey Clint I'd like to see a video on "Tools needed for working on a 7.3L". I haven't really seen any videos on that and it would be nice if someone like you with the experience and knowledge would show us what it takes. Some simple tools for us driveway mechanics and some more professional tools for those who can afford them. Obviously the Bluetooth OBD II and suggested Software to run with it. Maybe some Compression testing tools and tips etc. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

1 1/8 inch socket for ICP sensor. 10mm short and deep sockets for the pcm. Idm and engine harness. 13 mm short socket and deep socket for valve cover bolts and studs, starter relay. Odb2 adapter paired with torque pro. 8 mm for the injector hold down bolts. Car Guage pro for pcm idm tests torque pro can't do. One thing I would recommend is using an old valve cover gasket connector and splice them into test terminals you can hook a voltmeter up to in order to test the resistance of all the injector solenoids and glow plugs. Just ensure the gasket is good to go or else it'll throw off readings. 1 inch deep socket with 4 inch extension 1/2 in ratchet for manually turning crank. For compression testing you can remove the glow plug for either cylinder and find something with a 5/16 thread and a 10mm nut like a brass plumbing fitting that connects to a vacuum gauge for compression testing since the glow plug goes in the top of the cylinder/head. For fuel pressure you can buy a 1/8 npt fitting from riffraff or Amazon for gauging fuel easily from the bowl.

Have fuel have good fuses have good relays. I’m noticing a clicking from the fuel pump relay in the dash. Changed that out and still clicking while cracking and no start. Have new oil and filled properly. I’m leaning to the glow plug relay. But not sold on it yet because all lights do appear on dash

High Clint. I came across your site not too long ago and am loving the info you put out. I feel that you don't talk the bs that other sites I have seen (like the shady Mechanics you have said). Anyway, my wife and I are looking around on FB marketplace to get a truck that people say won't start and they don't have the time to trouble shoot. I am a Disabled Vet and My wife is Going to school to become a certified Heavy diesel mechanic because that is what she was when she was in the Navy. For we want to start up a mobile diesel repair to help out the loggers and farmers where we live and help other, we want to get one of the 7.3 Trucks and get it fixed and either flip it or give to our son for he is going to become an electrician and will want a service truck. So, buy watching this video we nowhere to start and not go from b to z to a trouble shooting. So, keep the videos coming so we can learn and like you said be able to stuff yourself like you always say and not rely on someone else doing it for you. Now for my wife and I to get money put together and find a truck and get it fixed. You have a great day. and we will do the same. Sincerely Brad and Becky

Well, I was just talking with my sister. they have a 2000 f 550 with the 7.3l. My brother-in-law and sister say they are having run ability issues with it and other stuff. They said they want us to work on it and my sister says she wants to get rid of it because they have hardly used in it in the last two years. So, it looks like we have our vehicle, and we will turn that into our mobile repair vehicle my sister just wants to really get it off her insurance for it mainly just sits and does nothing. We will go over it with a fine-tooth comb and do all the checks you say to do Clint and replace what needs to be changed. Again, keep up the excellent videos and we will keep you apprised on our adventure. Thanks for your time. And always to everyone who reads this have a great day and stay safe. From what I’ve seen you’re one of the most knowledgeable PSD people I’ve come across. I’m at a loss for things to check I have a 2000/7.3 that was removed to repair a broken bolt in the water pump, don’t ask I didn’t uninstall the engine I can’t get the engine to start I did all your checks and no start. New fuel pump & batteries glow plugs ok oil in HPOP IPC IS New disconnected still no start I have no scanner to check HPOP out put. Is it possible the LPOP lost its prime and can I remove the OP sending unit and pump oil in to prime the oil pump. Also the starter seems not to crank as fast as the videos I’ve watched. I’d hate to replace the IPM if it’s not bad. I’m an GM wrench and worked on many GM Diesels I rebuilt many standing injection pumps I’m pretty handy with a wrench and hate to replace parts not needed but I’m at my whits end any suggestions would be appreciated also I disconnected glow plugs and tried WD40 we started GM diesels with WD and tried some either and it doesn’t even fire I’m lost can you advise. I have a 2001 7.3 excursion that was repeatedly blowing the pcm fuse. J-case 20A fuse #113 in my case. I found a short in EOT sensor harness, and after repairing that it stopped blowing fuses. Now I have a no start again. P1210, and po231

2002 Excursion. I have a bad fuel pump relay. I tore open the fuse box and changed the relay (internal). Truck ran again. Probably less than 500 miles later, its dead again. Changed the fuel pump. Changed the fuse box to a used one from ebay. Truck wasn’t running great, but it took a few drives to clear up the last time. Within 5 miles it was getting worse and worse again, and now there is no power on the DG/YL wire at the fuse box (power from the relay). Either something is killing these relays in my truck (remember, I already put a brand new bosch fuel pump in), or the computer is not applying the ground signal to to the relay. I already sent the computer in for warranty repair since I wasn’t sure what was up with it. They sent it back having had it open, but no word what they did. That was before I changed the relay in the fuse box. I’m going to put in a new external relay. Just working out how to wire that. What I’m trying to figure out is how to determine the CAUSE of the relays going bad. I’m not convinced there was anything wrong with the original fuel pump at this point, although changing it seemed to work for a few miles. Fuel tank is hutched, and there is a 200 micron filter before the pump to keep the big chunks out. To reiterate, the pump isn’t running. Its not getting voltage, and that has been traced all the way to the fuse box. Inertia switch is fine.

Well I gone through many of your videos. Had a 7.3 spose to be a good runner that i swapped out. Started out it didn't have hpop pressure changed IPR and had IPC error so changed it and got 2700 psi. Made sure i had fuel filling my bowl rapidly. Used forscan app to check everything from my fuses, rpms, voltage drop starting, hpop pressure, no codes, ebpv pressure, no injector leaks cranking it. Just got white smoke and didn't sound like it was going to start. Was at what else can I do? I didn't pull the idm. Figure i would try doing compression test and if i did it correctly the engine must be bad. Had a cylinder that was at 150. Most were 200 and a cylinder at 300. So I assume it needs a overhaul. I read pressure should be around 400 psi.

I actually don't know what or what I should or can say besides thank you so much I'm thinking that some of what you covered will apply to 88 gas 150 that just shut down mainly in the wiring area , my 7.3 had well over four hundred thousand miles and died with a sudden coolant into oil you may have been able to help me avoid that but I have have a replacement with three hundred thousand but I was told it runs good and now I know what I need to do to keep it going I'm getting ready to swap it out. Thank you again.

Do you have a preference on wiring harnesses? I drive a 2002 Ford F350 super duty with a 7.3. It currently has 447,444 miles on the odometer. I replaced the engine with a pilot motor at around 404,000.

with the key in "run/on", i have 12v, not 5v, at my ipr connection... i havent pulled the ipr out yet to test its coil resistance. assuming there is no such thing as a 12v coil, i will not only have a fried coil, but also will need to figure out why i have 12v to it instead of 5v... wiring harness issue?

@@CUSTOMWORKS7.3PSD ok, good. well, at this point then i have narrowed down the potential culprits to; possible bad IPR, possible bad HPOP, or maaaaaaaaybe a weak fuel pump. The fuel bowl does refill, so i dont think that is it (though i dont have a way yet to measure the pressure- looking for a min of 50psi, right?) Next steps are to pull the IPR, test coil resistance and air-flow test, then get a way to accurately measure fuel and oil pressures.

Thanks for another great video. I fought through many issues with the hard/no start. The starter just sounded weak. A new starter, powermaster, did the trick. The truck started an ran well. BUT about 2 weeks later; Got in, turned the key, all the lights illuminated, normal, Turned to start and nothing, everything went dark. Any suggestions?

My 2001 f350 was running fine my son drove it to work and home he parked it in the driveway and went in the house for about 2 hours went back out to leave and truck hasn't started since. My hpop ipr was still plugged in and wire at plug is good. My tach isn't moving during cranking so I replaced the cam position sensor. Still no start I drive a big truck and had to leave so I still don't know what the deal is. Worst part is it drove home fine and just didn't start again. And I unplugged the icp and it didn't crank.

Issue I’m running into 2003 7.3 always runs wonderfully started at one morning idling nice and smooth and just shut off. Cannot get it to restart and have it invested a lot of time and diagnosis other than the obvious position sensor change no good plug the sensor on the right fuel no start still just have not had time to diagnose when it’s spinning no smoke or anything of that nature no white smoke just wondering Place to go next for diagnosis

Hey guys hope all is well with you and your family's, my question is what are the normal pids to have on for diagnostic 7.3 econoline van. I'm new to this and I find it interesting. I have forscan lite. It's a 1998 it started running when it was cold but when it warmed up it lost power while pressing the gas. I haven't bothered it in a while so I have to get it back started when I do what should be the first thing to do. Thanks again so much

2000 EXCURSION 7.3 Started misfiring on acceleration for about 5 miles, then just shut off and wouldn't restart. Scanned and got these codes. P1670 (Electronic feedback signal not detected) P1280 (ICP Sensor Circuit low) P0478 (Exhaust pressure control valve high input) I disconnected ICP, still no start. The electronic feedback code has me thinking its the PCM however , when i turn the key forward I get the glow plug light and check engine light, Where should I start?

Thanks so much for your 7.3 videos! I’m experiencing a problem with mine that has me baffled. This is a 2002 model f450 with only 5800 miles. Obviously bin sitting much of its life. The problem is when cranking for start hpop doesn’t build for 6 to 8 seconds. According to the scan gauge I have connected. Will the ipr pid today too determine its position through this scenario. This is regardless of ambient or engine temp. It then builds pressure starts and runs normally . The crank rpm seems normal. I checked the oil level in the reserve chamber and it remains full. Would a ipr or hpo sensor cause this problem? They are next on my list but I wanted to check first before throwing additional parts at it. Btw the oil is fresh 15/40. Thanks

Good afternoon; I just replaced the IPR and the ICP after several days of crank but no start. It starts up now, however, it has a surge in it about every 45 seconds now. Starts up rough, smoothed out, surges, rough, smooths out, surge! Is this a sign of a HPOP going out? Thanks for all your help.
@sirseven3
@sirseven3 Жыл бұрын
Could be, typically the pumps don't fail but it's possible. Maybe check the cam sensor If it is intermittent then it is likely a sensor that is causing the issued because the computer reads the sensor adjusts fuel, reads sensor adjusts fuel, cyclical like that

@@sirseven3 Thanks for reaching out! I have since changed all the wiring harnesses under the valve covers and main harness, new CPS from Ford and so much more now. I downloaded Forscan to check codes and am getting P1211, stuck IPR or weak HPOP. I’m leaning towards the HPOP as it is 20 years old at this time. It went out on me in 2004 and I replaced with a remanufactured one. That will have to wait as they are not cheap, I will just have to deal with the surging and not follow anyone to closely. Thanks again for your help

@@johnhof5657 do ipr first. Pull it out lookup a disassembly video. It's likely stuck, hpops don't go out that often. If it was hpop you'd have issues top end gunning it.

@@sirseven3 yews Sir, did that yesterday. It seemed stuck when I took it out, but totally disassembled it down to the tiny needle. Cleaned it up with break fluid and was rattling nice when I reinstalled it. But no change in the idle, still surges and rough idle. Forscan at idle is only 400 and some change on the ICP, but will jump up to 1,700 on start. Brand new IPR, not saying it couldn’t be a bad solenoid out of the box? I clear the codes and P1211 always comes back.
