There’s very little actual mime in this mime scene, which goes to show how much you can say with so little. In this version of the ballet’s finale, Giselle not only forgives Albrecht for his betrayal but also asks him to move on with his life and marry his fiancée, Bathilde. Albrecht and Bathilde reconcile as Giselle vanishes, hoping, it seems, that her beloved will be able to find happiness with another woman. According to the Bolshoi website this ending has been re-created after a 1911 Ballets Russes staging and it’s different from the one staged by Petipa when he revived the ballet in St. Petersburg; in Petipa’s version, which is part of the Sergeyev Collection, Albrecht finally collapses and dies, and his body is then found by his squire Wilfred and retinue. Giselle’s ghost’s disappearance was described by composer Adolphe Adam in his unpublished Mémoires: _“At the dress rehearsal I made an alteration which was approved by my collaborators, Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier. Giselle, at the first rays of dawn, re-entered her tomb. I did not consider this ending sufficiently poetic. I had the idea of making her lover deposit her in a bank of flowers and of making her gradually disappear. This climax made a better ending to this very poetic legend and achieved all the anticipated success”,_ from Cyril Beaumont’s “The ballet called Giselle.”

Thank you so much for posting this. Yes, Smirnova and Belyakov do manage to say so much with little actual mine, especially Smirnova's magnificent arms. I much prefer Gautier's ending because, after all, how can Giselle become a Willi and go on as a spirit eternally helping her sister Willis to dance men to death? With this ending, we can believe that she is a human young woman finally laid to rest in the earth forever, having generously given her blessing to Albrecht and Bathilde. There is true catharsis. I truly admire Ratmansky's staging.

They just need to get rid of Giselle' wings. Tsiskaride is right about this - Giselle never is a Willi.

I swear I have read that there was an ending used in this period where it's only Bathilde and Wilfride and Giselle sets Albrecht's hand into Bathilde's rather than giving him the pep talk from her soon-to-be grave with the whole entourage looking on. That's what I was hoping for, but Ratmansky's recreation still gives a better sense of closure than the typical contemporary ending. Thx for posting!

@@elizzy8754 Could they go the route of La Sylphide and just have her wings drop off? I'm being partly a little silly (I know it takes some work by James to get the wings off the costume) but it would mean she had won her freedom and her right to eternal rest.

This ending was tender, emotional and took my breath away when I first saw it live in the cinema. Had to watch many more times. What a heart wrenching story however with all its incredible sadness, it is also incredibly beautiful. Kudos to Ratmansky as a choreographer, outstanding staging and last but not least, it goes without saying to the flawless and talented Smirnova and Belyakov. They are such a pleasure to watch. Unforgettable!!!!

The very first ballet I have watched from beginning to end. Everytime I see this part my heart breaks. The love they had was true, right until the end.

This super version of Giselle by Adam; it is according to the original score. Listen in KZbin the full recording of Giselle, by Richard Bonynge. I am 71 years old and still feel the emotional farewell. Romantic I was born; romantic I will die. 👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🌺🌸🌷🌹♥️
