History books won't tell you that while the first widespread texts of the whole bible were in Greek that there is an Ethiopia text too that predates colonisation. I will never hear that Christianity is a white man's religion, no evidence no logic and no wisdom can be found in that claim. Amazing video

Exactly! It's true that we do not have the actual original versions of the gospels in our grasp (which were written in Hebrew and Aramaic), but many early Christians did preach in different languages and even translated to other languages so they could reach more people.

In addition to the Ethiopic translation, there are also very early Coptic and Nubian translations. Bruce Metzger has a nice synopsis of these early manuscripts in "The Bible In Translation".

Every African named in this video was born and raised in a European controlled territory in Africa. They were all raised and taught under European institutions. All these Africans listed in the video have Greek/Latin names. I'm sure most of them spoke Latin and or Greek. Who introduced Augustine to the bible? Who introduced Minucuius and Athanasius to the bible? We all know it that it was not an African institution that introduced these folks to christianity.. We have to be more honest about this information.. Stop bending history to create a comfortable space for you to keep your beliefs.

Indeed! The African influence on Christianity cannot be underestimated. St. Simon Of Cyrene, the very man who carried Jesus’ cross to Golgotha, became one of the earliest missionaries to Greece where he traveled with St. Paul Of Tarsus, and later became bishop of Avignon, France before being martyred by crucifixion. His sons St. Rufus and St. Alexander also became missionaries. Not to mention all the Church fathers mentioned in this video, and so much more. Other African saints that are worth looking into are: St. Perpetua. St. Maurice, St. Moses the Black, St. Mary Of Egypt, St. Adrian of Canterbury, St. Kaleb, St. Marcarius of Egypt, and St. Anthony the Great.

I really enjoyed your video and will be passing it on to a number of my friends. I have been impressed with the african presence in the body of Christ from the very beginning. For example there's a number of indications that the man who carried Christ's cross was from Africa and that at least one and maybe two men who started the gentile church in Antioch where from Cyrene... a North African city. I think this explains and complements Paul's teaching in the first century that, in the body of Christ, there was no partiality or favoritism between Jew and Gentile, Greek or Barbarian, Man or Female nor slave or free. Really liked what you had to say... keep up the good work.

@Dericka Michelle I remember speaking in a church in Dallas TX and the title of my sermon was, "Christ was not an American" and you would have thought I had released false teaching into the service... They did not like what the Bible clearly taught about Jesus being a person of color. Sad, but we can see how easy it was for the first century Jews to have similar misconceptions about who the Messiah "just had to be." I think it's best to just stick to what the Bible actually says. Thanks Dericka - I enjoy your thoughts and ministry.

And the fact Christianity came from an area 60miles from my grandfather's house in Lebanon! Christianity was built on ancient Middle Eastern, African, and Greek knowledge and councils. it only emphasized the north more once Islam had conquered the majority of the ancient Christian lands. Patriarchate of Antioch, Alexandria, and Constantinople are still around, and the Tewahedo Church of Ethiopia has one of the least-changed denominations in all of Christendom. There is even claim that the Ethiopian Church possesses the legendary Ark of the Covenant. Christianity in Africa began with East and North Africa centuries before it hit most of Europe. It's central and western africa that got Christianized later by the European colonists. Didn't even know about this channel until now, just subbed.

I am not Roman Catholic. But I do hold most of their views. When we read the Epistle to St.Jude, the first Chapter of Galatians. We find that there is only one Gospel. The one Gospel which had been accepted from the Apostles in the first place. We have a book wherein we find many records of disputes and corrective measures found in the early Church. But we do not find an exhaustive list of all the Apostolic doctrine and praxis. It is certainly available through the Catholic Church. And the East. But not through scripture alone. You should carefully examine the Church of Eritria, Ethiopia, and Egypt. Their doctrine so closely resembles Catholic Doctrine that it removes any doubt concerning what Early Christians believed. They definitely weren't protestant in any way. Nor should we be.

St. Athanasius defender of the faith wrote the book On the Incarnation which was so important that was considered to be an extension of the New Testament and almost was included in it. He is one of our greatest Popes! Also a note, the Coptic Orthodox Church founded by St. Mark the Evangelist in 33 A.D. was one of the most influential contributors to the Faith. You seem to have a very catholic/prot view but I would love to see you make a video about the Oriental Orthodox Church we have Ethiopia in our communion along with Eritrea, Syria, and Armenia. (One saint I love to bring up when people try to claim that Christianity is a "white man's" religion is St. Moses the Black his story is very very inspiring!)

Heya, Eman, I'm coming a little late to the party, but I really wanted to thank you for your great work these days, especially because there are groups who preach that Christianity is the religion of the whites which was imposed to the blacks, which is completely wrong, being that we have plenty of evidence that it wasn't the case. Kudos to you, man, you're being brave in your video, showing the reality of the fact. By the way, I've been reading that, in the past, White Supremacists believed exactly that and that they would use this argument to be against black people being pastors or even preaching to white people, which is something quite interesting that some people who say they are against white supremacy are reproducing the same argument white supremacists made back in the day (which was completely false). PS: By the way, I spotted just a little mistake in the video (very small mistake, by the way). When you were talking about Marcus Minucius Felix, you ended up putting the photo of a statue of Marcus Aurelius which was a Roman emperor known to be a philosopher and a follower of the Stoicist philosophy. He may have been a great leader, but he wasn't a Christian.
@FaithTalks

Emanuel my namesake! Thank you so much for watching. I'm not surprised that argument was used back in the day to prevent Black Pastors. When people have an agenda they'll twist facts to prove their point. It's sad, but God is sovereign and thankfully (in most cases) we've most past that. Even though there is a long way to go! We are made in Christ's image. We should never make Christ in our image

@@FaithTalks fortunately, we are going into a good direction in this regard. Churches are caring less about the race of their pastors or attendees. I'm glad that here in Brazil we already have a great number of black pastors and priests, so I really hope we can make the churches more "mixed" so, in countries in which racism is still rampant, we may be able to make people see the essence of the person instead of judging for the colour of their skin. Big up @Faith Talk. Astute young man. Just stumbled upon your channel. Awesome in depth account of some the early church fathers of African decent. I predicted St Augustine of Hippo would be your last from what you said about him at the beginning. One quick and vitally important correction though. There is ABSOLUTELY no difference between the Catholic (universal) church of the 1st century and that of today. Christ established His church here on earth in Matt.16:18 and that church has a continuous and unbroken lineage that can empirically be traced historically and liturgically to this day. The current Bishop of Rome sits on the 'Chair of Peter' (cathedra), the churches very first Pope and every catholic bishop today, if asked, can trace his ordination all the way back to the bishops of the first century. Concerning this, there is absolutely no doubt. I am open to CIVILISED AND INTELLIGENT dialogue on this and other matters concerning Catholic apologetics. if you'd like. I wish you all the very best
@FaithTalks
@FaithTalks 3 жыл бұрын
Haha glad that you clocked onto Augustine quite early. Thanks for the comment. I hold a different view to the governance of the church. When Jesus tells Peter that he'll build his church on this rock, he doesn't say that he will build his church on Peter, rather he will build his church on the proclamation that Jesus is the Christ (this is the first time Peter has declared Jesus to be the Christ). We see in the apostolic age that the gospel spreads through Peter, but also through many people when Peter isn't even around. Peter was a key presence in the early church, but wasn't a single or final authority. The authority was spread amongst the apostles, who were not replaced after they left. The authority in the early scripture accounts is then passed on to local church gatherings, and not to a bishop or episcopal structure. Of course many people appointed bishops, but I don't think this was what Christ had in mind for the structure of his church. So I completely reject the papacy and I fellowship in congregationally led and elder guided churches. I hope that makes sense and I'd be keen to hear your thoughts.

@@FaithTalks if this is the case why would jesus change his name from Simon to Peter. I would jesus give Peter "the keys to the kingdom" and that "the gates of hades shall not prevail against the church"- built upon Peter. Firstly the context the this is significant, In essence jesus is now transferring power and authroity to St Peter which he has taken away from the high priest (who previous held the keys to the kingdom ie the temple) However this church built on Peter is way more symbolic. The church is like a bride and jesus is the groom. In ancient jewish customs the groom would prepare a place to live for his groom before they are married (some can stay betrothed for some time until a house is built) That's why Jesus says I go now to prepare a place for you. I'm trying to avoid getting to technical but I would advice you listen to Trent horn on the papacy. I must say though even though I agree with the papacy and the authority of the holy father. I do not agree with most of his standings . The pope is infallible not impeccable. Peter taught to love your neighbor but would not done with the gentiles (paul rebuked him for this ) Peter taught infallibly but he was by no means impeccable he even denied God thrice.

@@liamblumeris6933 Hey Liam! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Peter was clearly an important figure, but nowhere are we told that Peter was the final authority of the church. He, like the other apostles, had authority that Jesus had given him. Again though, we're not told anywhere in scripture that this authority was meant to be passed down through a line of papacy. The papacy comes from superimposing meaning onto what Jesus said, and a desire to put in place a mediator to our mediator. But we don't need one. We have Jesus. We have his word.
@liamblumeris6933
@liamblumeris6933 3 жыл бұрын
@@FaithTalks I don't think it needs to be stated it is most definitely implied to be the case. Peter is mentioned more than any other apostle and in order of importance Peter is named first with judas being named last. The words "Holy Trinity" isn't even in the bible yet we believe it to be true. Then why does jesus tell Peter whatever you bind on earth is bound in heaven why does he give him this powerful authority? All 12 apostles were seen as rulers of the kingdom of God but Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter so that he could take on that name and he was given the keys to the kingdom "keys" is symbolic of the authority that he would now hold. And that whatever he bound on earth would be bound in heaven. He stripped israel of that authroity and gave it to Peter. Many people flocked to Peter some even just to be covered by his shadow so that they may be healed. We are all mediators for each other hear on earth. I can pray for you (as a mediator) to jesus Our mediator unless you don't believe in that either ? It's called intercessorry prayer. But that has nothing to do with the role of the pontif.

The only place recorded that Jesus visited outside Israel is Egypt (He stayed there for three years). The first non Jewish man recorded to have believed is the Ethiopian eunuch. The second nation to accept Christianity as an official religion is the Axumite Empire of Ethiopia, only after the Armenians. Add to this what is in the video.

Why would they need to say that? It’s self evident. Do you belong to a Protestant denomination? Who are the main thought-leaders behind your particular Christian sect? I bet they’re white. Who brought Christianity to your shores? He definitely did not have black skin like southern Africans and some Indians. He most probably had skin like modern Lebanese people and that’s more white than black. It definitely is a white religion, but you can believe in it if you want to. For me, there’s no reason to believe in such tales.

@no hymen no diamond WTH? Christianity was not brought to India by Apostle Paul, where did you get that idea. It might have been brought to India by Syrian Christian’s early in the first century, but it had zero Impact on India. It was then brought again to India by Portuguese imperialists and other European missionaries.

Great video. What would be helpful to add in is that Christology was fluid and many beleifs which were seen as orthodox in their day were then seen to be heresy. The Trinity as we understand it today (as crystallised in the various ecumenical councils) was the theological argument that ultimately won. Personally I no longer believe that Christ was ever present with God. Somewhere along the line, JC's divinity which was identified following his crucifixion and ascension to heaven was pushed back from his crucifixion, then to his baptism, to his birth and then to be ever present with God; in essence JC was assumed to be God's Logos.

No disrespect but why is any of this important? This is essentially a Roman Catholic Church history lesson, which includes largely non Black Berber Africans, being passed off as "African History" that Blacks are supposed to be proud of? What about all of the indigenous African religions that predate Judaism, Christianity and Islam? Additionally, lot of the North African/Berbers especially just about every single one highlighted here, are "white". Even some of their descendants in the current day in morrocco are referred to as "white moors".

Thank you for the presentation. I have a collection of some of the African Fathers’ writings, and it is fruitful learning how the early Christians taught and practice. In the U.S., Black Americans (at least the ones I have talked to) don't recognize them as Africans. They will say the real Africans did not live in the North. The last real Africans were the ancient Egyptians (ancient Kemet). What do you say when you people say those African Fathers are not real Africans?
@FaithTalks

Thanks for watching! In answer to your question, if Northern Africans aren't real Africans then African Americans aren't Americans at all. It's the same principle. If living in African for over 1000 years doesn't make you an African then I don't know what will. And the point really is that Christianity was not a European invention, but predates Europe's presence in Africa. Christianity doesn't belong to White Men any more than it belongs to Black Men. The gospel is God's!

@@paladinhansen137 God is a story that men tell. And all stories are man made. Berbers are the various native peoples of North Africa that the Romans described as barbarians since they couldn’t understand their language. Indeed, the word Berber is derived from the word barbarian. All I did with my comment was give more information about the native peoples of North Africa who were at various times conquered by different races of men, from Phoenicians to Romans. These conquerers would often become the ruling class in the conquered territory, but not the ethnic majority. Why does this clarification offend you so? Remember, it was only the two or three tribes who came back to Israel, the Jews, but the 10 tribe's who were the first to be rebellious taken into slavery, most of them NEVER went back. They also hid their identity, intermarried for fear of persecution, that is Israel. So to speak, Israel was scattered allover, including Africa, along the Nile. When Noah was born, he was so pale like the fallen angels who left their first estate, so they went to seek before God, if he was that breed mixture of human and angels, but he was just an Albino so to speak, meaning Noah's family was black. God created man out of dust, clay l should say. We see African children playing with clay making dolls out of it, none shows peach color PLEASE. Meaning, the Adam and Eve were black made from clay, Noah's family was black etc..... Noah's son's, Ham's descendants were Cush ( Ethiopians) etc... May God Bless His work Amen Amen!

Thank you. I think Athanasius etc just happened to be in a sociopolitical reality influenced by Rome and Greece because they were empires. It still doesn't take away from the essence of what they were teaching. Remember that christians were heavily persecuted by these powers. Ethiopia developed its Christian belief through their connection to their Jewish heritage but the message is essentially the same. That's what matters, the message of an all powerful God who sends His son to save ALL humanity. It may be taught through different cultural lenses (because people receive messages differently) but it's still the same universal message. PS Augustine, at least, was aware of Paganism in Rome and probably what he saw locally and consciously rejected these things. It makes sense that he wasn't going to use it as a point of reference. I'm also aware that Mark the gospel writer taught in Africa. With all the trade and travel at that time, it is not unthinkable that these early Christians were directly influenced by Jesus' followers who were always beyond the Jewish community, if you read the scriptures keenly.

Not a surprise if there were any. At least in the east the Egyptians had been in contact with the Sudan and Ethiopia for centuries before (via the Nile). Somalia also had major trade ports used by the Roman Empire for far east trade. It shouldn't be a surprise if the church had some intellectuals from the Sub Sahara. I'm not sure about the West of Africa but the Kingdom of Mali certainly traded with Berber Arabs in the high middle ages and picked up Islam from them as well. It wouldn't be a surprise if there was some Christian presence in that region early on.
