Thank you for your review to this video. Here are some more facts about Meghalaya - 1. Area is 22429 sq.km 2. Population is ~ 32lakhs or 3.2 million 3. Three major tribes - Khasi, Jaintia & Garo who are one of the oldest tribes in India. 4. Only state in India where matrilineal system is still followed. 5. 2 places, Sohra and Mawsynram have held the record for highest rainfall in the world(12000mm annual rainfall) 6. 9 out of the 10 longest caves in India are in Meghalaya. Krem Puri being the longest Sandstone cave in the world (26km). 1600 caves have been discovered in the state so far. 7. Some of the tallest waterfalls in India are in Meghalaya. Nohkalikai (1110 feet) being the tallest in Meghalaya. 8. Living Root bridges are scattered all over the southern slopes, approx 600 in numbers. Some are as old as 500-600 years old. The most famous being the Double Decker living root bridge at Nongriat. 9. Sacred Forests are found in every Khasi princely state and some are 1000s of years old. Not even a leaf is allowed to be plucked. Most famous sacred forest is in Mawphlang. 10. Sea Urchin fossils, Shark fossils, dinosour bones ets are found in southern slopes of Meghalaya like in a place called Mawlyngbna. 11. There is a famous village by the name Kongthong where people identify each other by a whistle or tune, hence called Whistling Village. 12. Meghalaya has fast flowing pristine rivers and is one of the best destination for professional kayaking and rafting in the world. The Kynshi, Umtrew and Kopili being the most famous for white water rafting. 13. The pitcher plant which is a carnivorous plant (nepenthes khasiana) is found in certain locations in the state. 14. Some beautiful hill top lakes are found on some places like Mawphanlur. 15. The tallest peak in Meghalaya is Shillong peak (1965m) msl. 16. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya (1495m) msl. Highest temp in summer is 28 deg cecius and minimum in winter goes down to 0 deg celcius. 17. The Meghalayan Age is named after Meghalaya. 18. The Khasi and Jaintia erect monoliths all over and keep the megalithic culture alive for 2500-3000 years. 19. Some huge one piece rocks are found in Meghalaya such as Kyllang Rock, Symper rock, Mawryngkhang rock, Khoh Ramhah rock etc. 20. Meghalaya is famous for outdoor activities such as trekking, camping, zip lining, caving, canyoning, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, rafting etc. The Khasis belong to the Mon-khmer family of the Austro-asiatic race. The Austro-asiatic race is believed to may have been the first settlers in the Indian sub-continent. In the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya, the parents stay with the youngest daughter and the husband comes and stay in the wife's house as it is believed that no matter how good the daughter in law is, it's the daughter who will take care of the parents better. The youngest daughter is also the custodian of the family's property and upon the death of her parents receive the major share of the property and wealth as a token of appreciation for taking care of the parents in their old age. And why does the youngest daughter have to take care of the parents, because by the time the parents grow old, the eldest daughter would have started to grow old too. The youngest daughter would still have enough of energy to take care of the parents. The men are respected in their wife's house as the main daily bread earner and provider and protector in the wife's house and also as the uncle in his parents house who is to manage his parents property and support his sisters in deciding various clan matters. And yes dowry is non-existent in their dictionary as usually both parents work and provide for their children. A wife may be a temporary house wife only when she has recently given birth and is weaning. Life is very hard in the hills, so no other way out but for both parents to earn a living. Children also take the titles of their mothers and not their father's. It is one of the last surviving and practising matrilineal system which predates the patriarchy system. When it comes to the subject of inheritance, you can understand that in a tribal setup land is of most importance. And since titles are taken from the mother's name, hence the children belong to the mother's clan. And each clan or family of a clan will have clan land. The members of the clan are allowed to work the clan land to support themselves and earn a livelihood. And by the brilliance of this system, it is very rare to find a khasi beggar. Because he/she would belong to a clan who would have some clan land where unless he is too lazy to work, will never ever have to beg a day in his life, no matter the circumstances they come across. This clan land or property is ancestral in nature. It is the supporting well for the clan and all its members. Hence, it would be unwise for a son to take the clan land and pass it on to his wife's clan, leaving his own clan at a loss. Yes, property which is not ancestral (earned by the toil and sweat of the parents) can be shared amongst sons and daughters, if the family is well to do. But priority is always given to the daughters as in Khasi belief, a man has Khat-ar bor or 12 strengths while a woman has Shi-bor or 1 strength. Hence, because of this, women need materialistic wealth as support whereas a man can always be sent out to the world and will have the strength to support and fend for himself. It is also this very fact that Khasi women are not prisoners of abusive marriages because even if the relationship is abusive, they do have to tolerate their wicked husbands because of their financial independence. Also in traditional khasi marriages, when the groom enters the bride's house for the wedding ceremony, a loud cheer is heard, " Law wan u khaw" literally translated to "The rice has reached" which denotes the happiness of the wife's family that someone who will provide has come and joined their family who will work and till the land and support their family. Hence, the khasi man is well respected in the wife's house provided he brings honor and happiness to their family. Now, if the marriage does not work, he has all the right to end the relationship and go back to his mother's house, as there will always be a place for him in her house as he is the uncle to his sister's children. When his nephews and nieces marry, he will be the one to intercede on their behalf and hold discussions with the other family to see that there are no hindrances in the union as they are of his clan. He also will manage the clans property, which, though will be inherited by his sisters, will be managed by him as a token of his clan duties and chivalry. Hence his importance in his mother's house as well as his wife's house are equally marked out. Hence though the Khasis are matrilineal, they are no way matriarchal in nature. Yes the system is not 100% perfect as there will always be those who will tamper and take advantage of the system, but for what it offers, it is a well thought out system which has been tested through centuries and comes across as a well balanced system. It is good to appreciate the practical wisdom of such ancient systems.
