Meghalaya "the abode of clouds" There are three major tribes, the Khasi, the Jaintia and the Garo. But there were many sub tribes. There were many festivals that were celebrated by different tribes like in different seasons. But those main festivals that you guy saw was the Nongkrem dance: The most important of festivals among the Khasis, the Nongkrem Festival is celebrated every year at Smit, 15 kms away from Shillong. It is an essential seat of the Hima Khyriem (Chief of Khyriem). The rituals are performed by the Syiem, the head of the Khasi state and ka Syiem Sad (head priestess) who is revered as the caretaker of the ceremonies and the people. The festival is celebrated for good harvest, peace and prosperity. People from all over the country and the world come to witness the celebration that is accompanied by young women performing the Shad Kynthei and the men circling them performing the Shad Mystieh, as a symbol of male power and protection over the women Shadsukmynsiem dance: celebrates by the khasi tribe during the month of April every year. This festival was held for three days. Only the unmarried ladies who were said to be virgin were allowed to dance and they have to dance inside the circle, and the men would dance from outside the circle. This show that men will protect the women from all harms. Behdeinkhlam festival: this festival was celebrated mostly by the Jaintia tribe, it was celebrated in the month of july before the seeds growing season. This festival mean chasing away tha plague.Tall minarets are paraded to the holy ground and are then submerged in a river(mud) only men used to take parts in side the muddy river while the women will be just cheering around. Wangala festival:was celebrated by the Garo tribe, it's also known as the hundred drums festival. post-harvest festival celebrated to mark the end of the agricultural year. It is a thanksgiving festival to the god of fertility, known as Misi-A-Gilpa-Saljong-Galapa. Lead by the cries of the leading warrior, he leads the girls to synchronised dance steps with hand and heads gesturing movements while the boys beat the long drums. This festival was held during the month of september and December in Garo region. There were many others festivals. Hope I do give you better information though.

Just to correct you all dear friends: Those festivals in Meghalaya it held once in year The jaintia festival is called Behdienkhlam(They organise prayers and dance so that they will not be affected by pandemic and natural calamities) and .The Festival of khasi is called Pomblang Syiem( in which the King use to cut those chosen goat) If you want to know better you can ask

Actually it's only two tribe that is the garos and the khasis, because the jaiñtias are included in the khasis tribe before. The division of the khasis and the jaiñtias from the one (same) tribe in to two different tribe is the policy of the British i.e " divide and rules policy" to divide the khasis power / unity,(the king or raja , the people ,etc) and to make her rules easy here in Meghalaya .

Jaintia is the place not the tribe...People residing in the Jaintia area they called themselves as Pnar, they are the subtribe of Khasi.

Personally I always consider khasi and pnar to be the same community. If you ask any elder of a khasi clan where they come from , they would invariably tell you that their ancestors arrived from jaintia hills. We should never say that he or she is a jaintia , but rather say that he or she is from jaintia .we are a microscopic community surrounded by a vast multitude of people from different communities, so let's not furthered divide ourselves.
