Huw, I grow my zucchini/courgettes up a stake so I have lots of room for other plants that might benefit from dappled shade through the summer. So when I plant my zucchini/courgette out I place a 1.5"x1.5"x6' stake right next to it. I placed nails/pegs every 5-6 inch down one side of the stake before I place it in the ground. With no dig it allows me to push it in about 12-18" deep. Then as the zucchini/courgette grow I tie it to the stake with strips of cloth/garden string. Then as it grows I continue to remove the lower leaves and keep tying it to the stake. I've had great success with this. I know there are KZbin videos on this. I love doing this so I can grow extra lettuce during the hot summers.

Again, some great advice! I like the concept of emulating nature in gardening. As you mention with interplanting and underplanting, nature never has bare land and it never has just one type of plant growing in an area. Even in a forest there is an undergrowth of shade loving plants. Had to laugh when you mentioned planting squash on the compost pile, though, since I always find ones growing there that came up volunteer from seeds that had been thrown in there.

I love using wild/alpine strawberries as a ground cover/instead of mulch. Because they are a lot smaller plants than even strawberries, so most other things I want to grow are taller. They have very shallow roots, so they don’t interfere with the other growth much and well they taste amazing. They aren’t suitable for commercial purposes because they are such fragile berries. But they are some of the most delicious berries on earth. They are sweeter and more fragrant than your typical strawberry. They also really help keep weeds away from the beds. Just a little weeding in spring before the wild strawberries leaf growth have fully recovered from winter. After that next to non. If you get a verity with runners you can just plant two plants in the bed, come back a month later and you have a ground cover for the whole bed. I find they seem to thrive in a lot of parts of Europe,

Therefore creating the most growing space avaolable. Hello Huw, thanks for another great inspirational video. One question if you could help. I had very bad luck with my courgette plants this year (slugs, late frost) and I ran out of seedlings, so a bit too late to grow more seeds in Irish weather, I could only find a bush variety (green bush) plant from a garden centre. Was wondering if I could grow it vertically (no space in beds), even if it says it's a bush variety, on a trellis. Thanks again for all the content!

Hello Huw, thank you for this fantastic video, these are amazing tips! I'm a novice and started to try inter-planting. But i'm a bit confused by the planting distances suggested by seed packets. I've experimented with square foot gardening in the past whereby plants are put very close together, but the soil requirements are a little different. How do you decide on planting distances when inter-planting in your raised beds? Would inter-planting distance be something in-between the two methods, i.e. square foot and traditional planting? Thank you :)
