For anyone thinking that I've mistaken a ladybird larvae for a pest, please pause there video and look for the aphids around it. On my big editing screen they looked obvious however on smaller screens I can very much understand how they can be missed😉

LOL. I thought I must be wrong, but that looked an awful lot like a ladybird larva. I had to go back and re-watch. Yup, if you're looking for the aphids they are everywhere. Unfortunately, they fade into the greenery on the short clip. Lesson learned on finding pests in contrasting color, I guess. ;-)

I'm growing a lot more herbs and flowers than usual this year, and I always interplant radishes with everything because the pests hate those things even more than I do. I had some major problems with squash borers and tomato hornworms in the past, and interplanting aromatic or flavorful veggies seems to reduce the damage.

Huw, I grow my zucchini/courgettes up a stake so I have lots of room for other plants that might benefit from dappled shade through the summer. So when I plant my zucchini/courgette out I place a 1.5"x1.5"x6' stake right next to it. I placed nails/pegs every 5-6 inch down one side of the stake before I place it in the ground. With no dig it allows me to push it in about 12-18" deep. Then as the zucchini/courgette grow I tie it to the stake with strips of cloth/garden string. Then as it grows I continue to remove the lower leaves and keep tying it to the stake. I've had great success with this. I know there are KZbin videos on this. I love doing this so I can grow extra lettuce during the hot summers.

Again, some great advice! I like the concept of emulating nature in gardening. As you mention with interplanting and underplanting, nature never has bare land and it never has just one type of plant growing in an area. Even in a forest there is an undergrowth of shade loving plants. Had to laugh when you mentioned planting squash on the compost pile, though, since I always find ones growing there that came up volunteer from seeds that had been thrown in there.

I love using wild/alpine strawberries as a ground cover/instead of mulch. Because they are a lot smaller plants than even strawberries, so most other things I want to grow are taller. They have very shallow roots, so they don’t interfere with the other growth much and well they taste amazing. They aren’t suitable for commercial purposes because they are such fragile berries. But they are some of the most delicious berries on earth. They are sweeter and more fragrant than your typical strawberry. They also really help keep weeds away from the beds. Just a little weeding in spring before the wild strawberries leaf growth have fully recovered from winter. After that next to non. If you get a verity with runners you can just plant two plants in the bed, come back a month later and you have a ground cover for the whole bed. I find they seem to thrive in a lot of parts of Europe,

Ladybirds are good for keeping aphids under control there's some species that attack mealybugs and the plant disease mildew so the species required depends on the pest/disease you need to keep under control. Have you ever thought about digging over your whole plot then having one main path from your gate to your shed, preferably not made from grass as I think that becomes another job to do on the plot? Therefore creating the most growing space avaolable. I did some research and in the medieal times an allotment plot size was 100 foot by 30 foot with a path up the middle to maximize growing space and also to make sure there was enough space to get an Ox and plough up each side of the plot. I will be interested to hear your thoughts. Regards, Dave

I am not using tomato cages, mainly because useless, heavy tomatoes cause cage to fall over, using 2 stakes even fallen branches for each tomato plant. I am surprise you don't wrap your squash roots in aluminum foil keep vine bore out. Also found out across the pond, one can grow bush beans until September. That's my plan this year. Thank for the informative videos jeep it up.

Great info, as always. If I may ask, how do you use the kale flowers you harvested?

I treat them like broccoli side shoots, perfect for stirfry, add to mixed steamed greens to go with eggs on toast, blanch and cool to make salads more substantial. Those are just some quick ideas.

I like to let potatoes start from chits in my basement in vermicomposter and in early spring relocate to the yard garden or bucket planters.

Hi Huw, last year I started three raised beds for vegetables. It's a brand new garden with no plants/hedging. Hence except kitchen waste I have no tree clippings, roots or leaves for composting. Can you suggest where I can get hold of the organic compost to start with.

Hey Huw, a couple of questions regarding potatoes on buckets, if I may : Is the plastic in builder's buckets safe or are they particular ones? How many per bucket? I assume you keep them low initially and then top up the compost as they grow? Thank you 😊

I too have thought of putting up trellises between my raised beds this year. Have you ever done a video about how you store the crops over winter? I really failed to store my beetroots last year and they quickly dried up . I would be thankful for any tips.

I'm no expert but my advice to store beetroot is to pickle and make relish. For an on going supply of fresh beetroot keep planting every couple of weeks. 👍 Good luck.

Previously you made a video regarding nettles to make a tea for adding nutrients to your plants. Here in the US where I live, we don't have nettles. Is there a similar plant we could use? Thanks for the information you impart. I am learning a lot, and I have been around for a looong time.

Hello Huw, thanks for another great inspirational video. One question if you could help. I had very bad luck with my courgette plants this year (slugs, late frost) and I ran out of seedlings, so a bit too late to grow more seeds in Irish weather, I could only find a bush variety (green bush) plant from a garden centre. Was wondering if I could grow it vertically (no space in beds), even if it says it's a bush variety, on a trellis. Thanks again for all the content!

Hello Huw, thank you for this fantastic video, these are amazing tips! I'm a novice and started to try inter-planting. But i'm a bit confused by the planting distances suggested by seed packets. I've experimented with square foot gardening in the past whereby plants are put very close together, but the soil requirements are a little different. How do you decide on planting distances when inter-planting in your raised beds? Would inter-planting distance be something in-between the two methods, i.e. square foot and traditional planting? Thank you :)
