The biggest tip is to leave the tree stumps on your farm so that trees respawn every two or three days. Wood is very useful for all crafting, and you will need a lot of it.

It takes them 3-4 days to become butcher-ready if I recall correctly.

This game royally sucks. In the prologue it wants you to cook dinner at home, well, I never found home. The end. Flushed.
