The A4 B6 is a great car for new drivers. On snow or ice, the AWD drivetrain will keep you on track. Luxury build interior, mine is a 2001 3.0 V6 and has heated seats, GPS and good speakers. If you are lucky, you will find one with leather seats. Parts are cheap... I bought now a S4 B6 because I like the A4, but wanted more power.

I've owned a decent bit of cars, (mustangs to volvos) and after my volvo shit the bed and was in need of a panic oh shit I need a winter beater car, was very pleasantly surprised that the a4 is an absolute blast to own! I have a b6 2.0L quattro and its a ton of fun. however he's not wrong if you like working on cars then this is perfect because there's always something that will need to be fixed on em. just to name a few that I'm still working on. 1. cruise control doesn't work. 2. break disc's, calipers and pads. 3. air leak in the evap system. 4. my glovebox door ripped off the hinges. 5. burns a bit of oil.

In 99-2000 I got my first car which was a $400 Mercury cougar with non working power steering, tape holding the front bumper,no rear view or side mirrors and bunch of other crap but it ran and drove fine actually with the 3.8 V6 and 145k on the clock. 6 months later I got a 91 thunderbird with the 5.0 302. It had a few cosmetic issues but the engine and trans were great and was actually bulletproof through my teenage hooning... that car cost $900,found it sitting for sale at a mechanic shop. I had a 95 4.6 V8 thunderbird top later and a 94 Lincoln LSC but after that I was finally able to live out my BMW fanboy days with my first one a $2700 92 e36 325i/4 that I sold for $4200 and upgraded to a 328i. Lesson here is if you are broke then don’t get a money pit aka German car. Even with my first 325i I took a gamble cause I was literally 18 with a bad paying job and only $5-10k in savings when I got lucky and found one for that cheap. All the nice ones were going for $4-5k atleast because it was still early 2000s and it was only one gen behind,e46 was out and e90s was still 2-3 years out so I got lucky but I did almost lose my shirt later on a couple e39 540s,thankfully I was 21 when I got my first one and I was making money. I got the car and threw shitload of cash into it making it the way I dreamed off and shortly after I had to fix an oil leak that cost near 2 grand and it was a somewhat low mileage car like 70k just hit but I got at 56k miles

The 2016 ford Taurus is what should have been on the list. Because its pretty reliable and sounds great in my opinion.

You missed out on all the reliable supercharged 3800 general motors cars that say you get a Bonneville SSEI have leather, moonroof, sporty styling, front wheel drive for the winter & a sweet sounding supercharger that can be modded to over 400hp. Regal GS,Pontiac Grand Prix GTP,Buick Park Avenue and very rare Oldsmobile Delta 88 with supercharger. Reliable and fun and easy to work on yourself all for under 2 grand.

The Grand Cherokee didn't replace the XJ, they were made simultaneously. The XJ was replaced by the not so great Liberty with it's unreliable 3.7 V6.

The 1.8T can also be found in the Seat Ibiza from 2007 but it makes 10 more hp than the Audi A4. If you can get over the fact that its not a sedan and AWD it could be fun.
