In 99-2000 I got my first car which was a $400 Mercury cougar with non working power steering, tape holding the front bumper,no rear view or side mirrors and bunch of other crap but it ran and drove fine actually with the 3.8 V6 and 145k on the clock. 6 months later I got a 91 thunderbird with the 5.0 302. It had a few cosmetic issues but the engine and trans were great and was actually bulletproof through my teenage hooning... that car cost $900,found it sitting for sale at a mechanic shop. I had a 95 4.6 V8 thunderbird top later and a 94 Lincoln LSC but after that I was finally able to live out my BMW fanboy days with my first one a $2700 92 e36 325i/4 that I sold for $4200 and upgraded to a 328i. Lesson here is if you are broke then don’t get a money pit aka German car. Even with my first 325i I took a gamble cause I was literally 18 with a bad paying job and only $5-10k in savings when I got lucky and found one for that cheap. All the nice ones were going for $4-5k atleast because it was still early 2000s and it was only one gen behind,e46 was out and e90s was still 2-3 years out so I got lucky but I did almost lose my shirt later on a couple e39 540s,thankfully I was 21 when I got my first one and I was making money. I got the car and threw shitload of cash into it making it the way I dreamed off and shortly after I had to fix an oil leak that cost near 2 grand and it was a somewhat low mileage car like 70k just hit but I got at 56k miles
