Hi Geis, thanks for clarifying the axe issue. I like that your videos are quick, detailed, but not slow....Very informative. I was trying to find an answer to my problem here. I think the answer lies in PERMANENTLY SET up axes or TEMPORARILY set up axes....which I hope got it right now. So for TEMPORARY axes use"align axes" by double clicking on face and PERMANENTLY set up axes by using the toolbox symbol of the axe (part of construction toolbox, on the left).....I will still have to double check if it works the same way in everywhere or just in a group.....Sometimes it takes a bit of effort to figure out the right way of using tools, but it is still more rewarding to use sketchup than use other architectural softwares I used before.....Cheers,

Hi Justin. Just joined the Patreon thing to support your efforts. Really appreciate your tutorials. I've been in the custom woodworking industry for 40+ years and use SketchUp now for everything under the sun. Tried to learn many other CAD programs but never quite got proficient enough to dedicate the time to really learn them. Not so with Sketchup because I find it very intuitive and because of people like you with fantastic tutorials. Took me quite a while to weed through the ones that think they know Sketchup only to find (after too much time) that they just knew enough to bluff their way through. As I get more into learning the finer details of Sketchup, I'll try to bump up my Patron level. Highest regards, Duane

Terrific as usual! Suggestion: if you don't already have this subject in another of your tutorials add best practices for setting model elevation scenes (front, back, sides) by using the axes. I found another tutorial that showed described how to set the green axes upright then save the scene. This is for when the model is not aligned to the original axes and the standard elevation view buttons don't work.

Good as always, Justin. Q: many of us (I imagine) are proficient with ACAD or similar software and miss some basic handy commands such as mirror, extend, trim, and fillet. I know that folks such as S4U have commands such as mirror taken care of, but could you do a video where you review the various available extensions that mimic the most used CAD commands that are not in SU and/or which SU commands may be good workarounds?

I love sketchup, it's super useful. I simply can't believe in all the years it's been around that no one has figured out how to code some sort of stress/strength test, which would be super useful to use framers and woodworkers. Build a chair or set of stairs...click a button and have it apply weight to the structure and highlight the weakest points. Knowing where something is the weakest will allow us to know where it's most likely to break. Meaning we can build-in solutions BEFORE they happen. Could save lives. Just sayin...I know I know, not possible, they aren't solid state objects yada yada... but still after seeing what can be done over the last decade with skin wrapped objects and draped cloth objects there has to be some sort of solid state processing going on. Who ever codes this thing first is going to make a pretty penny over the next few years. I can see every construction engineers eyes lighting up with the decreased law suits, lower insurance costs, and new money from new builds instead of fixing old builds for free.

Thanks Justin. This quick to the point video Helped me find the way of aligning an defined axis to a group. I'm still surprised even to this day that Sketchup allows you to right clicking a component then "Change Axis" to change the axis of a component however there is no option to "Change Axis" or similar by right clicking options of a group. I highly recommend Sketchup should fix this workaround (under tools as per your video :) by making options off a right click to something like "Change component Axis" (For components) and "Change group Axis) (For groups, not currently a feature) or any other way. Maybe this was an oversight or they intentionally missed that out thinking that a components (2+ copies in model) changing the axis could be more useful than a one off group, any thought on that?

Hi thanks for this video, I've been using SketchUp for about a year now and in fact I've used it to design a house that is currently being built. My house has a 45 degree bend in it and that 45 degrees has driven me nuts as I never took the time to really learn how to best use SketchUp. As an old Auto Cad user I've had to stand on my head to get to grips with SketchUp but man I wish I'd have taken the time learn more about the in's and out's of this powerful software. It's quite something to see a four bedroom house taking shape for real but we've already seen it inside and out thanks to SketchUp. Kind Regards . . Andy

Great tutorial and a boon to users of many experience levels as so often its just not known. One approach I use on homes with a diagonal wing is set one scene of the floor plan or model with axis on that diagonal so I can swap back and forth readily and reliably between normal axis and diagonal. The align axis right click trick in this video is a go to for me. I ised UT twi months back instead of a diagonal axis scene to quickly toggle axes on a huge home with many angles. Super handy, mayhaps worth a shortcut key.
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...probably depends on how often you're changing the axis. If it's only once or twice, maybe not worth a shortcut. If it's constantly, maybe worth looking into...

As usual you're videos are concise and informative. Big thanks! This is a big help, but still think i'm going to run into problems on my project. I was handed a CAD file for a project including 3 buildings built wall to wall about 100 years ago. Openings in the walls allow us to develop the project in several floors over the 3 buildings. Zooming in I can see the CAD lines don't even all meet and none of the walls are square with each other as the whole street follows the river behind it. Any further advice would be appreciated.

Hey, many thanks for taking the time to upload this video. resetting the orientation is a very useful tool, but how do you reset some thing so that it can be returned to original default orientation? I have figured out you can draw a line off the model that has been rotated and measure the angle to work out how many degrees o f movement is required to bring it back the same as the rest of the model. This works great with square models ,but now I have a with a curved surface so finding it very difficult to align with rest of model.

@dal2888859
@dal2888859 5 жыл бұрын
What if you're scores of hours into a drawing with many components and groups and start to notice very slight misalignment between certain groups, is there a way to sort of snap those groups into alignment with each other? The current model was created in order to incorporate the organization tips you presented, and it is highly ordered in outline and layer. Your instruction about the function of layers was a key. And the outline was a revelation. When I saw your videos I was already 60 hours into this model. So I opened a new model and began to copy and paste my components and groups into the new model, and to organize them into an outline and set my layers in order; I also built as needed in that process. It took roughly 16 hrs to complete this manual transfer. Maybe in the copy and paste there was some misalignment? Or it could be a relic of earlier, less experienced executions of building goals. Thanks, I enjoy your videos very much.

Really great videos, Justin. This one in particular is particularly powerful. BTW I'd love to see a video dealing with unwanted triangulation of surfaces. It's when a previously flat surface breaks up into a bunch of triangles. And even deleting the face and recreating with a polygon tool will, again break into triangles. I think it's a bug but it happens out there a fair amount (I've seen it in the Sketchup forums). I could get a video to you if you want.

Thank you!! I'm doing a weird drawing (because why would you do something straight when you can angle it? 🤣🤣) and of course, putting a roof on it is a pain in the proverbial. This is going to make it so much easier (because I can now set the axes to the sloped roof so I can put lines on it without doing all that weird stuff with the geometry that doesn't work and frustrates the living daylights out of me) Thank you!!

When you realign the axis on a house to suit the site, are the axes aligned north and south,is the north point off the axis? In other words is the sun in the right place in your model?
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if that's what drives the sun location - I know geographical location does, but I don't know how it sets "north" in the model. I think there's an extension for setting solar north that does this fairly effectively.

Thanks for the video. It didn't answer the problem i was facing but learned new things about axis thanks to your tutorial. Concerning my own issue, i luckily found after a while how to solve it myself. may be a missing tip for those users who have just like me moved the origin Axis instead of creating a separate one in a component or block. HEre the problem i was having, i saved my SKP file with the origin moved, and when i tried to import this SKP file in another model, it was not the right position, basically because of the Axis being moved in my first SKP file. i couldn't find anywhere a menu button where to set the axis back to the origin until i right clicked on the axis itself and found the option called "reset". The Axis came back to origin. Hope this may help others if they get the same issue.
