In this video, we have partnered with Titleist in a bid to help bust some of the most common golf ball myths. This video, in which Neil Tappin is joined by Titleist golf ball specialist Tom Hiscock, explains what these misconceptions are and will hopefully help you make a smarter choice when it comes to selecting the right ball for your game.

Couple of points, only my opinion of course. Firstly, try finding somewhere in the UK you can actually get a Titleist ball fit. There’s not many that have a facility that allows a green to tee fitting. Cost is a big factor too. The myth ‘I’m not good enough’ isn’t a Myth, it’s a real thing. A golfer may want to use the best ball, but if you lose 3 or 4 a round, it’s expensive. Even the Velocity is £2+ a ball in the UK, and that’s a horrible ball. I think this video doesn’t apply to the majority of golfers, just those with no budget concerns who play better than average courses. I guess this was a Titleist sponsored video.

I think Titleist True Feel is a good all around ball! I use a yellow lately, but really like the green like the Wilson Professional urethane!

Interesting video. I would take exception to one of the "myths". I believe in using a softer ball in colder conditions (and keeping the same clubs in the bag) for four reasons. 1. It's harder to get loose and swing (and extra clothing does not help any) to take advantage of a harder ball. 2. The fairways are firmer and thus the ball rolls further, so little or no loss of distance off the tee. 3. I maintain better feel around and on the green with the softer ball. 4. It simplifies everything - no need to buy extra clubs and then try to figure out which ones to put in the bag.

I realise pros are unlikely to change their ball in winter. A tour pro is going round the world playing in the summer, when it rains it is not winter wet or frosty. A club pro generally has a ball sponsor. We may be looking to save a little money when the ball either sticks in the mud or bounces on a hard surface.

I think Titleist and all the manufacturers oversell the importance of spin in the short game to push buyers to their expensive balls. You get more "control" with more spin if you're consistently striking the ball in the same spot of the face, sure. But that's just not what the average golfer does. It's not even the case with many good golfers. But everybody has their preference. I'm currently a 3 hcp and I've played everything from the Left Dash to the Supersoft. Luckily for my wallet, I prefer the performance of the softer ionomer balls. And to Titleist's credit, the TruFeel is a fantastic all-around golf ball, at a great price.

Thanks for commenting on colour. If you ask me Titleist should do more work on coloured balls and include more gloss coloured balls. As you a say I lose more in winter and don’t find that white works so I use yellow or orange. In summer yellow or the Velocity green.

Totally missed the point that higher handicapper’s probably don’t use premium balls as they don’t want the extra cost of possibly losing £10 to £15 of balls a round.

He did mention cost re high hcap/ high ball lose. Most of us think that as we approach low 20s and lower it might be worth using one make. Doesn't have to be the £3 ball though. Depends on budget and lose count.

I have used a measure golfballs per hole. Having a level of 0.5 means that £20 is not enough. Technically anyone can use a high quality golfball but economically not (at least I am not rich enough). Threfore your poin is absolutely valid.

If you play 30 rounds per year, how much more do you pay for a premium ball compared to all golf expenses with a budget ball? I don't think it's much. And it will definitely improvement course management which could drastically improve scores, lol.

Neil, I have found that the yellow Pro Vs do not scuff up as much not sure why. I personally use a green golf ball (Vice Pro Plus Lime) mainly because it is easier to identify.

Here's my follow-up question: I think it was My Golf Spy that demonstrated that matte-finish balls perform differently when wet; i.e., fly higher and spin less. Has Titleist researched this? Thx.

I used white golf balls all my playing days until this year when I tried using orange matte balls which were so easy to find as my eyes start deteriorating. The last couple of months I have tried the Vice neon lime ball which I can pretty much see through the air as well as sticking out like the proverbial dog's ____ on the fairway. The performance seems to be be even better for my game in warmer weather when I seem to get an extra 20 metres approx on shots on most clubs vs other balls I have used. I am a convert.

- 1st - winter players have 15+ handicaps play cheaper balls to save money ( winter easily losing when the golf dive into mud or soft ground ) - Expensive Soft vs Cheap hard golf balls definitely have major differences between them in spin or feels . End of the day is depending on the golfers ? Low handicapper & deep pocket buy Pro-V Mid - buy Kirkland High - anything cheap

It’s a great business model for the companies to say “fit the golf ball from the green back” and there is some merit. However it’s a business model to showcase the premium £50/doz high spinning golf balls. I can personally adapt to any kind of ball from 120 yards and in. It’s the long game performance and feel which is so overlooked and maybe that’s because most people would choose a softer (cheaper) ball based on those clubs. Interesting video though

I grew up playing tennis in an era of white balls. I was serious about the game and when the ball color changed to yellow, I was not too happy. In a word, I found the color distracting. However, it didn’t take long for me to get used to the yellow balls, and I found that once the balls got dirty, they were much easier to see than white ones after they picked up some dirt. I still play white golf balls, but I suspect that I will give yellow ones a go one day soon.

The "backstopping" rule was invoked on me when I was around 2 meters away on the west side of the hole. The other player mis-hit to my ball. There was no intention on both our parts to backstop his ball but I agreed to leave it (because the other player thought it wouldn't affect his shot and I was hurrying to place my cart nearer the next hole). Is intention part of it? Clearly my ball was not behind the hole.

I use yellow balls because I see them far better than any other color. I'm 70 and my vision has deteriorated due to glaucoma. The yellow-green ones are also good. I would like to see actual evidence regarding glossy vs matte golf balls. To me, the matte ones seem to slow down faster when putting, but that's my subjective assessment. I also wonder if they travel in the air as far as glossy balls.

It’s in the interest of the golf ball company regardless of brand name to say what was said in this video. Of course they want every player to play the premium ball. If you’re bad you’ll lose them and have to buy more. If you don’t lose many and play better you’re free advertising to people that don’t play as good and think a ball will fix them. And once you get to be the best or pro level you don’t pay for golf balls anymore so it doesn’t matter what you play with. ….thank you for attending my Ted talk

So many average club golfers trying to be all technical about golf balls. Imagine what they used back in the 60's and 70's with wooden clubs. Trust me the golf ball isnt your problem unless you play scratch golf or pro. You simply dont hit the ball consistently enough to matter. Granted dont use a Monitor but any well made ball will do you - Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Srixon - done.

I can't understand the logic of a golf ball that has more spin giving more control. If X ball spins twice as much as Y ball then then there's more to be lost due to the quality of strike. Slight misshit on a spinny, ball it comes off the club with no spin and runs through the green. You use a ball with less spin to begin with and you've got less variation.
