Hi guys! I have mixed feelings about Loch Lomond... I mean, I tried their 18 year old expression and it was so disapointing (especially for the money I spent), but on the other hand, Inchmoan 12 year old is so delicious... my favourite currently:) I know, it's a separate line of products, but the same brand, isn't it?

You’re totally right: very underrated malt. Many reviewers have their prejudice because of the low quality of the brand in the past. Serge’s score on whiskyfun is ridiculous and even Ralfy’s review is too harsh as Most of the comments below state. It is craft presented, unchillfiltered and natural colour. And it is delicious, especially for its moderate price! Very good reccomandation.

In my area Glenglassaugh already dug themselves a hole. Some stores took chances on them years ago but non of their product moved. So to this day bottles from 2018 or earlier are still on shelves. Those store owners don't want to chance it again getting their new releases. Similar with Royal Brackla. I haven't seen any newer bottlings. Mind blown on Bladnoch. This Scotch experts in my local store recommend the Bladnoch 11 year. Some other brands to check out are M&H Whiskey Distillery and Penderyn seems to have changed their marketing.

Yeah plenty of shops here still have the older Glenglassaugh stuff, too. I had to seek out a newer bottling. I've also got two M&H reviews to get to eventually. Can't say I've had any Penderyn recently. I've noticed a lot of the fancy new packaging though.

I agree with the Glenglassaugh, after giving their rare cask release a go a couple of years ago, its something I look out for each year. Based on the quality of those releases a new age statement should go down well. Another one I might add to the list would be Glencadam, they do good stuff anyway, and its probably undersold but someone there has been paying attention to what Arran have been doing with their releases over the last few years and a conscious effort has been made to emulate some of the cask usage for their more recent releases. If they keep the quality up and the prices reasonable it should get some new levels of attention.

Hi Geoff, one distillery that no whisky nerd would look at let alone buy a few years ago is Loch Lomand, many years ago there was only the original and the 18, both bad, but now boy are they bringing out decent stuff, and so many variations 👍. So many distilleries are changing their attitudes now and bringing out craft presented whiskies, because it is the way forward and if they don’t they might be left behind. Actually it’s been quite a while since I bought a 40 %, chill filtered, coloured whisky. Could go on but won’t. Cheers Geoff a great list and enjoyable video, slàinte.

Those plucky upstarts at Bacardi and Brown Forman will be delighted with your list! I’d like to add Glenturret to the mix for up and comers. The three bottles I’ve had since the take over by Lalique have all been excellent. Heavy Sherry influence and over priced for a 12yo but the quality of the casks they are using is undeniable. Maybe reminiscent of the Billy Walker model, but they do have a large warehouse full of mature whisky to develop a core range from, so I’d go for these to be tried by yourself if you can get your hands on one, would be good to get your opinion G.

Kilkerran 12 has gone up in price because of the Springbank craze (at least here it has), but I don't think it will appreciate too much in value, as it's a wide release in continuous production. I wouldn't worry too much about the case. If it bothers you, you could reach out to the retailer and see if they can get one. But considering you said one's for drinking anyway, I wouldn't sweat it. 😉

@@Gwhisky I will take that advice and reach out to Kilkerran. Thanks! Btw, in the Kilkerran 12 vid, you mentioned how Campbeltown is not your favourite region and Springbank does not make your favourite style of whisky, but in another vid I think you mentioned how Springbank was your absolute favourite 10. Is the 10 the exception for you? I had the 15 and it was amazing! But it was the old black box, whereas, apparently I've heard there can be batch variation for the newer 15s ... which the mere thought of is depressing. I've never had the 12CS but I think I'd absolutely love it even though I wasn't crazy about the 10. It was a small factor re: the 10 that kept me from loving it, and I'd imagine that would be fixed in the 12. You know how it goes, we get experienced enough that we can kinda tell how any kind of change will make the whisky. It's a good problem to have!

@@catnapgee5357 Yeah I kind of came around on Springbank. That Kilkerran wasn't a favourite and I'd just finished a couple bottles of sub-par Campbeltown offerings and I was kind of bashing them. I have good reviews and bad ones. I actually love Campbeltown. Hah.

@@Gwhisky Interesting. Well, once I see Springbanks in an Alberta store to order, im gonna go nuts on them! Just hope I didn't waste money on that killkeran 12, though may seem to love it. I wonder if it's the hype they're tasting. Guess I'll find out eventually. Fyi, I contacted the merchant, and they said that Kilkerran 12 no longer has tubes. I'm speechless! What the heck, is it a bourbon?

@@catnapgee5357 I think you'll probably enjoy it. Most people seem to. I even picked up a second bottle, which I haven't popped yet, because I'm not sure if I gave it a fair shot. Tomatin could have been on this list. I think they are a value brand with excellent quality that isn't in the spotlight. 43% for the NAS Dualchas/Legacy and also for the Tomatin 12 which is a sherry bomb, both very solid entry level single malts in a world of insanely priced scotch.

Hi Geoff! First of all I would like to thank you for your informative, helpful and regular reviews. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you a question about the Glenglassaugh Torfa, since you are talking about Glenglassaugh. From your point of view, this whisky may be of interest to a non-novice as a first acquaintance with this distillery? And what can you say about it in general? Once again I express my gratitude to you! Slàinte Mhath!

Thanks Giorgio. Thanks for watching. To be honest, the brand isn't outstanding, but it is improving. Considering they're craft presented and have stocks that are reaching maturity, I think they have the potential to become a solid brand. The modern Torfa and Evolution may not blow you away, but they're both solid and enjoyable whiskies imo. Worth trying, but make sure you get a recent bottling (within the last two years if you can). Cheers. 🥃

Good question. Shame it's a mystery. As for the price, I suppose they just make less profit off of the bottles because they aren't scrambling to price match the overpriced single malt scene. I'm sure the profit is still substantial, simply not as exorbitant as most other brands.

I'm not sure about Bladnoch. They had their moment of praise and glory with the 10 yo several years ago, but everything they have released since has not been so warmly accepted. NAS releases with stupid names, beefy prices and ugly bottles don't help either :) Glenallachie will get more popular only if Billy Walker don't retire or sell the distillery before release of any spirit distilled after 2017. Otherwise we'll be left with the current expressions which are 100% cask play and zero distillery character. Of all the brands in the list I have the best access to Glenallachie and their core-range is superbly priced. All they need is to keep the price/quality ratio until Billy Walker era distillate gets ready for bottling. I'm not sure about Aultmore and Craigellachie growing popularity too. Yes, provided they don't mess the quality up and keep the prices in check, they will be popular among whisky geeks. As high quality as it is, Aultmore remains blend fodder matured in refill ex-bourbon casks. Not exactly crown pleaser. No cask strength releases, next to no sherry casks, no intricate finishes. Also, both brands are slightly overpriced for what they are IMHO. I love Aultmore, but somehow I don't see their next release flying off the shelves. I'd add two entries to the list: Benromach has literally one step to go in order to reach absolute glory. I mean Springbank-like popularity. They just have to up the ABV of their core-range to 46%. Tomatin has great potential. They have very fine distillate which can be bottled after both moderate and heavy cask influence. They just need to up their core-range a bit. The 12 yo namely needs to be buffed in ABV and cask make up and they need to put some 14-16 yo core expression out besides the 14 Port cask finish. Quality is there, capacity is there, prices are reasonable. The brand needs just a little bling :) Cheers!

I should clarify that I don't expect all these brands to be huge. I'm not looking for the next Arran here. I'm just saying they're coming out of obscurity and starting to see some broader interest, and that it's likely to continue. I actually agree about Glenallachie. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of theirs. Very loud sherry and not a whole lot behind it, imo. I do like the 12 and the 10 is decent, but far from favourites. Both Aultmore and Craigellachie were black holes of interest a few years ago. We're seeing a surge of interest in both brands. I agree, I don't think Aultmore has the heft to make it big, but Craigellachie might. I do hope they give us more expressions. I totally agree that some cask strength Bacardi stuff is sorely missing. Benromach is excellent. They've arguably already made it big, but I'm sure they'll continue to grow. They'd certainly be a good fit here. Tomatin does seem to be garnering some interest. I've yet to be impressed, but I haven't explored too much from them just yet. I'll have to keep an eye on them. Cheers!
