In all honesty I think there are several blended malts which would be far superior and much better budget options, and the same applies to blended scotch. So Geoff, how about upgrading your list by doing a top 10 including the blends? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The Tamnavulins and the Glen Morays are a fantastic way to see the cask/wine influences in whiskies at a very good price. I think every whisky lover, especially in the early stages should try these bottles. Cheers Geoff!

Yes, here in Australia you’re looking at roughly AUD$65+ (about US$45+) for the cheapest single malts, which would be Glen Murray and Glen Grant. Most of what you mentioned is around $85-100 (US$60-70). Tamnavulin is a great choice for a cheapie when it is on special, as is Knockando 12.

Deanston Virgin oak is a good shout. It’s 36.99 at Total Wine in California. MacLean’s Nose is an excellent blend for $35. Kirkland (Costco) Islay & Highland Single Malts are both great value ($36 & $26 respectively) and decent abv as well (46 & 50 respectively). Compass Box Orchard House is still around for $40-ish too. Cheers.

Always appreciate a good budget whisky list, Geoff!👍 I have 2 good Irish suggestions: Jameson Black Barrel (prefer it to Redbreast 12 and at 41€, it's a third cheaper) and The Irishman Harvest, a mix of single malt and single pot still, ex bourbon, unpretentious but very nice for a 40% whisky - 44 £ but can get it 25% off on weekends, same is true for the Jameson. Same price as the Glenmorangie 10.

Deanston to me is the strongest in the line up. $58 Cad in Ontario. Out west you can get a cask strength for a few loonies ( bucks) more. Definitely my favourite budget friendly dram. Nice list Jeff.

Ancnoc 12 is usually over $50 in the US - also rather hard to find (at least in my large roaming area of Texas to Wisconsin, roughly). I love it and think it worth over $50. Glenlivet is $40 in the US, AnCnoc 12 is $73, and Tamnavulin is $36 (September 2024; Florida). At least we get the 750 ml bottles. Two more that would make it on the list for me are Loch Lomond 12, which can be found for $35-$40, and Aberfeldy 12 at $32.

If you want a budget malt whisky in the UK, best not get too hung up on lists. There are often discounts in supermarkets. Jura has lots of varieties that are often discounted, Bourbon Cask is often available for around £23 and is good. Having said that if you want a pleasant taste on a budget forget single malt and start exploring blended Japanese Whisky.

Good video. Those prices just show that we're being taxed out the nose in most places. I would add Speyburn 10 ("what Glenlivet should be" (c) Ralfy). Good timing, too. People are feeling the pinch. Luxury goods are down, big time. Also, I've been saying for years now that there's a "Whisky Loch 2.0", carefully hidden in plain view. Glenmorangie switching from 10 to 12 is not the first such example. Quinta Ruban went 12 to 14, but also Costco has been constantly upping the age on its generic Kirkland Signature single malts. That means there are lots of barrels sitting. Even in American whiskey, too. Age statements are back, big time. There will be bargains. If we have any budget left at all for whisky.

I had a bottle of the Deanston VO and loved it. I paid $55 NZD (approx. $34 USD). Unfortunately, prices have gone up and it is now around $67-$68 NZD (approx. $41-42 USD). I recently bought the AnCnoc 12 for $70 NZD (approx. $43-44 USD). The only other one of these I've had is the Glenmorangie 10 but that was a few years ago. This is currently around the same price as the Deanston VO. Prices vary a lot between retailers in my market so these prices are the cheapest I can get it. Cheers!

I've got a lot of love for Glen Moray, their spirit really does work very well with Chardonnay casks. I've always thought Old Pulteney 12 is a really good budget pick, those interesting briney flavours seem hard to find at these lower price points which puts the Pulteney in a really appealing spot. Also yes Tomatin Legacy is a mix of bourbon and virgin oak casks.

Central California: the ONLY whisky $30 US and under is Aberfeldy 12yr. and that will do in a pinch. But it's just vanilla and honey tones with a bit of apple. I've also heard this version will be phased out for a more enthusiast version however. Glenmorangie 10yr is $32, Glenfiddich 12yr is $34, Glenlivet 12yr is $36. In this market, the only one's I could recommend as decent are Laphroaig 10yr and Old Pulteney 12yr, both for $43. At that price, both are arguably high value for money.

I'm in Southern Ontario, Canada so, as you probably know, we have the single entity provincial government-run Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) as our sole supplier of spirits. All prices are in CAD: Tamnavulin Double Cask: $55 Glenlivet 12: $84 We don't get the Glen Moray you featured so our cheapest is the 15: $80 Glenmorangie 10: $77 (although the rebranded 12 is now $76). Deanston Virgin Oak: $58 Ancnoc 12: Ancnoc is not available in any form. Arran Barrel Reserve: $56

@chrisbrook12344 ай бұрын
@@Gwhisky 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I have a love/hate relationship with the LCBO for sure. There's a lot of positives: consistent prices across stores, no price gouging on limited releases or higher end bottles, their sheer size gets them better wholesale prices than any other Canadian province, and when I'm trying to find a particular bottle I can reference their province-wide inventory easily in one place. But, those come with negatives: their standard markup on everything is 114% since there's no competition, the taxes are high, the lack of competition results in a lower selection of options, and it's very hard for small craft distilleries in Ontario to get and keep their products on the shelves at the LCBO.
