If you don't mind learning to do most of your own maintenance, you can get a motorcycle for not that much more than a new bike these days. Especially, if you're willing to shop for parts at swap meets and trade work for parts. I forget which channel it was, but I saw one where they got all their necessary gear and the motorcycles for under $2k. And it may have been $1k. IIRC, it was the motorcyclist magazine channel.

What a terrible thing to do to one of our fellow motobros just because said motobro makes “list” videos. Which are highly entertaining and quite informative. Better than their click-bait crap. You know, the videos where the title references one topic which takes 2 mins to cover, but the video is a 10 min video of useless bs. Love ya, Papa Yam. My exception to the whole used helmet rule is someone I know sold me an AGV GP tech 5-continents for $75 dollars because he up and quit when his best friend died on a ride with him. He’s worn the helmet for a long time and maybe dropped it from his hand once or twice. I wear the shit out of this helmet for casual rides. I changed out the padding inside and got a new visor and the helmet is amazing, super vented, super light carbon fiber shell, I just love it.

I figured i just had to comment on buying a used bike. I grew up a car guy and let me tell you ALL of it transfers. If you want a cheap ass bike and it runs well, might be a good buy. Just depends on what you want. I know from the car game that projects are an endless abyss that you throw money down. If you want a project to have fun and make memories with this might be your best bet. I had an 09 Ninja 650 as my first bike that ran well but i put work into until i was satisfied. I broke even selling it to a friend. Fast forward 2 years later to now i got into riding again and bought a “running” 99 gsxr 600 for 800. About 400 bucks later runs phenomenally. If you love a fun project and have the know how, you can easily justify it.

I got a Shoei RF-1200 with a photochromatic lens as my first helmet. Yeah, I had to save up almost $600 but saved about $150 by not getting a helmet with graphics on it (went with matte black). It cost a lot but it's the only helmet I have/need. The lens changes tint based on the light so I never need to switch out visors plus it has a pinlock so it never fogs up. The vents and visor work well sitting straight up and in a tuck also. I ended up saving money in the long run by not needing to buy 4 different cheap helmets with 2 sets of light and dark visors. Plus comfort IS a part of safety. If you're comfortable then you pay more attention to the road and not to your discomfort.

Buy good quality hand tools. Consider it an investment. I use HF for things that I'm not thinking I'm gonna use more than a few times. If I'm putting something on the bike to carry if I need it, and I do wind up needing it, and it breaks, well, I can be righteously p!ssed off at a Stanley/Craftsman/Snap-On/Whatever. Not so much about the 59-piece set I have in the garage because it was the same price as the 10mm and 14mm sockets I'm somehow always missing from my good set. The cheap ones may last. They may not.

You're better off visiting the local pawn shops regularly until they have a good set of tools available. If you're lucky, sometimes you can get an entire set of snap on tools or similar for a deep discount and not necessarily any worse for wear than when they were new. Tools are one of the worst things to try and save money on as a bad set can make it too easy to damage things. Plus, you don't necessarily need to buy an entire set. Chances are that the bike only uses a small number of tools for most of the work. My Stanley sockets were pretty good quality and they didn't set me back much. The biggest expense with wrenches were the torque wrenches and those you absolutely have to get right and it's a wise idea to learn how to verify their calibration.

Honestly on helmets you should look into move then just comfort and protection features. I bought a helmet that came with a separate anti fog visor that sticks to the actual visor and its been a pain in the ass because it lost its adhesive and scratched like crazy and tightening it was a pain, the way to remove and wash the padding it a pain and the seal on the visor isn't waterproof so in heavy rain it leaks in. Ask these questions before buying. Save yourself a world of pain.

I sold my first bike before the valve adjustment because it looked very hard to even get to the head. The next bike I purchased was a BMW Boxer (the R engine) because the valves are easy to get to. I'm still overdue to check those valves...

@@dahveed284 I just leave that to the mechanic. It is overall cheaper than a damaged engine. I never questioned the valve check, I questioned selling the bike before changing the tires.

Helmets. If you ever need one, you'll wish you had a good one. Arai, Shoei, Bell, maybe a few others. How much is your head worth? How much will it cost for one trip to an emergency room? Do not go cheap here.

At about time 4:50 there was talk of carbon fiber helmets . Over the years I've only once seen a photo of a motorcycle helmet with an "Aluminum Shell". It was a happy story in an American motorcycle magazine from back in the eighties of a father and son that had started their own business . They produced just under 1000 units, but for some reason no more . Do you know of any other aluminum helmets ? Why do you think that the market place doesn't have any ? It seems quite straight forward to me to use a metal shell to protect peoples heads from danger .

Here in South Africa, we don't bother with "riding season". We have good enough weather to ride all year round :-). Thus, the point you made on when to buy a mtorcycle, is unfortunately not applicable here in SA lol.

Oh Lord Yam, the dude who sold you the bike didn't know what he was talking about. The 'CB919' doesn't exist. You own a Honda 919, or a CB900F. Could even say 'Hornet 900' to please your international audience. You're welcome, my immortal, illustrious savior Yammie N00b. Everytime I hear 'CB919' I lose a little part of my soul.
