Hello James and Tuck. I found that a gentle sprinkle of grass clippings over carrot seed is actually better than the board for people that forget to check the board -- oops. It's enough to help retain moisture and stop seeds from getting washed away but light enough that the carrots can still poke through.

This was my first year planting my own garden. It didn't turn out very well but I learned a lot for next year. I was about to call it quits for this year until I saw one of your videos saying that it wasn't too late for some crops, so I immediately started sowing cucumber seeds. Thank you for the encouragement!

Glad you didn't give up. You will continue to learn more and more every year!!! Best advice is to be persistent and keep a journal to help you keep track of when you start encountering pests (including remedies like peppermint oil, neem oil, and other treatments) and look at feeding times, location growth (which sunlight/shade does best for your specific plants, etc), and include start dates and problematic dates etc! If you are growing in different types of containers/beds, keep track of your soil types that you used and the type of container/bed! I learned that the fabric "smart pots" were great for tomatoes and but NOT FOR ZUCCHINIS, at least where I live in INDIANA! The zucchini did far better in my food grade five gallon buckets, and even in semi tilled clay ground (with added sand and organic mulch: don't use chemical treated wood) , then it did in the fabric pots

Great video and a great reminder to ABS (Always Be Sowing.) I love that Tuck is always on the job. This spring, I lost my garden mate Fionn the Corgi after fourteen years. He was always with me and kept the woodchucks and chipmunks at bay. My garden was decimated by them this year and it just occurred to me that his absence that not having his scent everywhere might have had something to do with it. I lost all my brassicas, lettuce, beans and peas. They left the nightshades alone though. I also like your (to me in Ohio) accent. Reminds me of my old sparring partner from Lawrenceville. I still say "wooder" because of him! Keep the videos coming! -Duke

So far I have 4 different kinds of bigger tomatoes & 4 different kinds of cherry and or grape tomatoes, 5 different peppers, 2 different kinds of cucumbers, 3 kinds of regular potatoes, sweet potatoes, asparagus that's on its 2nd yr, kale, bush greens beans, strawberrys and many herbs & flowers. I have had a lot of success growing in containers, too. If you intend to grow radishes, or anything that likes a steady water supply, I would use some of the moisture retaining potting soil and ollas to keep them moist, because containers dry out surprisingly fast.

Hi from Tampa Bay FL. Totally enjoyed this video and you’re so on point about continuously sowing and having extra/backup plants in the event something happens to the first plantings. The heat here in my area has been brutal and I have had to replace a number of plants, peppers and okra included. A couple tomato and green yardlong bean plants are thriving. Just started several more prize head lettuce. Thank you for a great video! Hi Tuck! As always, such a joy seeing you in the garden 😊

Ollas can be useful for plants that don't like mulch. I live in Australia and they are very handy during summer as it saves a ton of water. We can water heaps and it will dry out extremely quickly and may not even make it down to the roots, so an olla helps alot

Thank you for the enthusiastic encouragement to keep planting. :) I am going to pull my pea plants out and plant green beans and wax beans this week. I am going to try some more squash as well. I will take your advice about mulch , maybe some light straw or a little bit of our chicken bedding. I might need to create a new bed beside a fence for cucumbers. haha I have a table full of leftover tomato and pepper seedlings, which some peppers will be replacements for ones that didn't survive a hot dry spell. The potted seedlings are doing great! I just pop the umbrella up a noon and put it back down in the evening. I also pop it up if a heavy rain comes, which I'm glad to say we've had a few in the past couple days. I need to give away some of the rest, because I just don't have space to plant all of them. I used your board trick last year for carrots, and I had sooooo many! They were part of the reason I bought a pressure canner. This year the early heat may have stunted some, but they are growing where they will be lightly shaded by tomato plants. Again, thank you for the kick in the pants. Edit: I went right out and swapped in some bigger seedlings for my cool-apeno peppers. I planted some squash seeds in a mound with a giant climbing frame in the middle in the somewhat sheltered compost corner and mulched the recently weeded area around with some old straw that needed used. I weeded some and tended some... basically I played in the mud. haha

CLTserendipity, I bought floating row cover online. I cover all my brassicas, leaving a good bit of fabric on the top for the plants to grow taller. I hold the edges down with a few Earth Staples on one side of the row, and stones on the other side, so I can lift the cover to harvest, weed, and water easily.

This video was very well timed. We had a crazy hail storm that decimated my garden. So many crops were set back, or killed off entirely. So I'm itching to get things back in the ground. Thanks for this video. ❤❤❤ for you and the Boss.

Nice video. I agree with what you said about continue sowing, like some sweet potatoes that I had to replant . good thing I still had slips my neighbour's dogs thought it was mighty cute to use them for scratching practice.

Thanks! That was really helpful. I would like to know more about growing carrots. We have very heavy, clay soil. So i’m not sure what to do.

With lettuce, I choose a summer crisp lettuce (I’m growing Ice Queen), keep it in shade, and will eventually have a second crop in September (depending on first frost)

Years of mulching and composting. Ever year you get more and nutrient into the soil and you get more earthworms that helps with areation of the soil.

I see a lot of gardening videos and one thing that is always missing. We fail to thank God. Without Him our crops and would be nothing He sends the sunshine and the rain to bring the harvest give Him praise.

Great tips. I am finally doing this. As soon as my bok choy and giant mustard were ready to be harvested, I had napa cabbage and other plants ready to take their spot. I am trying to grow parsnip in the ground as we speak, I hope that its something I can leave in the ground even after the frost. I am WA, zone 8b and hope it works. I ate this root for the first time and absolutely loved it

Thank you for all the good information. I started some of my perennial flowers in July to plant later in the season. I live in Zone 4 so is very short growing season. I did start a second crop of beets and turnips for fall this month.
