I totally disagree with this. If you really just want to succeed, you don't need any motivation, you just need the right strategy. Hard work is truly unnecessary. Strategical ways to solve problems will make you win without self-improvement. Just analyse the situation and find the simplest and easiest way of doing something correctly and keep using and re-using that same technique. The thing is people say hard work is necessary, because of which most of us have this belief system that without hard work, there is no other way. But, if you have a scientific mind, you will always experiment on different methods and find out that even easier methods yield equal results to that of hard work.
