Great trip. We did the forward hammock trick on our Hobie with good results. Also set our tent right on the tramp for wonderful, bug free sleeping. We spent 8 wks over 2 winters sailing and camping from Tampa to the Keys. Lots of fun. Good going.

My wife and I have done a stretch of the Columbia river on a sailing dinghy every summer since getting married in 2012. It's some of our favorite vacation time. Nice to see we aren't the only "crazy" ones. The first time we got out onto the river with 6ft waves from wind vs current, my wife looked at me and asked, "Would other people call us crazy?"... "Probably!" was my answer, both grinning from ear to ear.

Years ago my wife and I were sailing our 30-footer down the Columbia from Cascade Locks and saw a ~14' sailing boat with a couple aboard, heading for an island to camp. I wonder if it was you. Definitely caught our eyes and got us talking about how simple we could go.

I knew I had seen those blue hulls and yellow rudders before! We saw you right outside Boyd's by Stock Island in January. We towed our Hobie 16 down from GA and noticed y'all tucked in close by the highway one morning from our campsite. Wish we could've said hey but y'all were gone the next day! Now we know why. Too cool.

The keys are probably the best environment for a hobie sailing trip imo, at least in the US. Lots of infrastructure, lodging if the weather gets too bad, beaches, mangroves in emergencies, and tons of shallow water boating opportunities that bigger boats can't enjoy. Plus amazing water and temps and food spots accessible from the water.

I like the buoys on your mast to prevent turtling. I have a boat bumper lashed onto mine from last summer when we went camping for a week with Hobies and made a video. It's actually considerably lighter than the Hobie mast float and seems to do the trick. My boat capsized twice and it worked as hoped.

I'd love to do that adventure in the sol cat. During the onset of pandemic I explored in the keys Backcountry gulf side east of kw in Jewish Basin/ waltz Basin. Got lots of mangrove snappers spearfishing. White sand and clear water looks like the Bahamas there. Have fun stay safe!

Don't forget about the center of gravity. Putting all the weight up front might effect the sailing characteristics. Maybe a jib will help with more efficiënt tacking?

You're in Florida...its always going to rain. A nice free shower after sailing or a wet mess for the unprepared. At least its usually warm when it rains. Ive seen it pour where im standing while being dry just feet away and vice versa. Its a trip for an LA native but that humidity kills me. That said, no shame in mixing in a hotel room into the experience, especially with another person who may not be into roughing it so much.
