Let’s go to the Motherland! 🌻 Open for more info y’all!
Back in September 2023, I won a $5,000 grant for my travel business through Intrepid Travel and Nomadness Travel Tribe. Flash forward to April 2024, I embarked on a free trip to Kenya to learn how to be a better digital storyteller as a mentee on their BIPOC mentorship program, while also diving deep into Kenyan life and culture. This was one of the most remarkable trips I've ever taken and I am so happy to bring you all along with me as I unpack my experiences as a traveler, travel creator, and black American returning back to the Motherland.

22:10 Driving across a river bridge that has been overrun by water is like playing Russian Roulette. That was a very risky move. The force of the currents underneath the bridge can be so strong, enough to sweep it away, especially when the weight of the vehicle is added. Anyways, I really enjoyed the video, and you Sistas Look Amazing in your Motherland - the place where your glow is the brightest :)

Who else get's triggered when African Americans come to Kenya and say we overlike eating Indian food? From Kenyan context 99% of Kenyans don't even know Chapatis originated from India. To them it's Kenyan they have been eating it for ages. We don't walk like into a restaurant and be like, "hey give me two pieces of that Indian food cos we don't like non existent Kenyan food". Indian Chapatis are not even made how Kenyans make it. I think it's a little ignorant. It's like visiting America and saying you have realized African Americans overeat English, and Mexican food instead of importing Nigerian yams to America. Kenya's proximity to India and Arab countries in early days gave birth to mixing of cultures. Swahili the national language is a mixer of Bantu, Persian, and Arab languages. Don't be shocked to see a Swahili man having a meal that looks Arab to you. Just like you took white man's culture and food and developed your own culture is how Kenya's history borrowed different things from somewhere. Hey why are we overliking tropical American fruit called pawpaw? Don't we have African fruits? Nice video though. Welcome to Kenya.
@Sojournies
@Sojournies 24 күн бұрын
Hi! Thanks for sharing. It was not my intention to imply you all "overlike" Indian food which is why I said "Kenyan food overlaps with Indian food" and proceeded to list similarities I've seen in the food because, as you said due to your proximity there was cultural mixing, which our guides told us about on the trip and hence what I was referencing. They did not go into detail about how the chapatis are different so that I did not know. But I could have been clearer, so my apologies. And yes in the U.S we know we eat a little bit of everything from everybody due to immigration and cultural mixing here lmao - and I personally love it! Also as Black Americans we had to create our own culture and cuisine due to our forced migration to the U.S but also still having a connection to our diaspora roots - it's part of our history. I think calling it "the white man's food" is a bit of an oversimplification so if you haven't already watched it I recommend "High on the Hog" on Netflix. It talks about how Black American food culture has shaped the U.S. and how the food we eat is connected to our African roots as well. It's one of my favoriteeee documentaries. Thanks again for sharing your inisght - I enjoyed my time in Kenya and am looking forward to learning more about your culture even after my trip!
