And remember when being online and connected to the servers wasn't needed to play single player? Now, once a game's servers shut down, the game will be useless, and you'll never be able to play it again, it would seem, because games won't even start if you're not connected to the internet. Buying a game now is just renting it until the makers of the game take their ball and go home with it. I want my non-online single player experiences back!

My guy, you have answered a question that I have been asking myself for years. The Cluefinder games have been hazy memories for so long that I was starting to wonder if they were just my own imagination. I know it's been a year since your comment, but you've given my fevered searches some much-nedded closure.

yeah, I think it made sense for things to go in this direction for a while because the tech and know-how was finally there, but I feel like it also lead to bigger investments which got stuck, be it because of profit/risk assessment, focus group / feature list design, or even being limited by the new technology which was built with realism in mind. That being said, there have actually never been as many wack games being made as now. They're just not the hugest productions.

The real answer is that now video games have become real money makers so brands are paying to be included in the video game (gun manufacturers pay to have their guns in realistic shooters and sports franchises pay for the video game development as marketing for the real thing)

A big thing overlooked in light gun games going pfft is when TV went digital. All those nifty light gun games worked on the big, bulky cathode ray tube (CRT) screens, not the flat ones. "Arena" shooters are alive and well: people still play Team Fortress 2 and Quake 3. Nothing better has been made since for some reason. RTS and TBS also deserve love. HoMM3 have a great surge of popularity in the recent years because its a great game and there is nothing like it. In RTS people a lot of people still play StarCraft2 despite its numerous flaws and abandonment by the devs since no good game was made in this genre since. Regarding mini-games - missed opportunity to mention Alley Cat.

Certain RTS titles are making a comeback - just look at the recent release of Command & Conquer Remastered. If not that, thriving modding communities have sprung up around genre mainstays (like the aforementioned C&C or Dawn Of War 1) to keep the games alive after their abandonment. TBS games, particularly 4X titles, also seem to have devoted audiences if the popularity of things like Stellaris or the excitement of the up-and-coming Dune: Spice Wars is anything to go by.

I still remember playing DK64 multiplayer as a kid. Indie games know the way, thankfully, but I do miss big budget games utilizing turn based tactical style combat

I think that the point and click genre is too big to ever really die, but there are definitely sub genres that have replaced classic games and types. In the pick up/talk to/use X on Y games, we still have Thimbleweed Park and various Telltale Adventures games, but the new ones seem to be focused on making a moral choice or executing a quick time event. We definitely don’t have the classic Sierra and ICOM games where one false move kills your character, and the game mocks your foolishness. I also haven’t seen much of the isolation/exploration games like the Myst series. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen anything else like Myst at all.

Yeah. You might want to kill for a compilation rerelease in modern consoles and the PC.

I kinda miss playing the point and click adventure type games. Games like Grim Fandango or Full Throttle.

Actually adventure games came back in a big way as indie games over the last decade. There are a ton of options on PC nowadays. Just search "point n' click" on Steam and you'll discover a bunch of new ones.

I've played some great indie point and click games in recent years! Darkestville Castle has nailed the Curse of Monkey Island vibes, from the cartoon art to gameplay. I also really enjoyed Later Alligator, more of a mystery adventure, excellent game design as well.

11:30-13:25 NO MENTION OF SLUGFEST? Getting into brawls was the best part of that baseball game! Getting “hot” had that player literally ON FIRE in the batter’s box, playing as the Detroit tigers let you player AS TIGERS! Even had Matadors, and the ability to make QUITE the home plate collision with a FLYING KICK TO THE CATCHER’S FACE!

I resent the implication that I ever enjoyed a peripheral rhythm action game. Release Tudor-era lutenist hero or gtfo.
