7 dead in Georgia ferry dock collapse

At least seven people died and several more were hurt in what investigators are calling a "catastrophic failure" of a Georgia ferry dock gangway.

The gangway, was installed in 2021 and last inspected in 2023. The ferry dock was rebuilt after Georgia officials in October 2020 settled a federal lawsuit by Hogg Hummock residents who complained the state-operated ferry boats and docks they rely upon to travel between Sapelo Island the mainland failed to meet federal accessibility standards for people with disabilities. What went wrong? RIP victims.

Witness said they were caught in the current. Which probably means they were pulled under or too far away for help to reach them, and not strong enough to swim back. Very sad.

​everyone keeps saying its the capacity, as if that's the only problem in this. overloaded or not, that isn't the fault of the riders. no signage/warnings posted, no verbal cautions/warnings from the operator/staff - nothing. this being "state-operated" makes it much worse. they're supposed to know better & set the standards. there's no excuse for their negligence & lack of preparation.

40 people on the gangway, that's a lot, check the persons rating. Probably not rated for that many people, it's a through way, so traffic could have been slow moving, building up on the gangway, hence, overloaded.

I feel like the boat probably just pulled away and they are not saying it for fear of finger pointing (fed maintained ferry). It will come out though. The boat just shifted in the water causing the gangway to fall. It wasnt secured propertly. Shame.

The few times I have walked on aluminum structure I have always felt unsafe. Aluminum isn't very strong, at least to me. I once ordered a cane, and the cane bent. So I'm leary.

To be fair, all we’re in the senior years 70 + ,most likely never given the opportunity to learn the swim. Most people learn to swim as children or very young adults . They lived in the Jim Crow era. 😢

That’s simple it’s state funded they found the cheapest company to build it they probably didn’t test it or have any regulations to test it thank you and they put it up in service because the one gentleman that was there helping to save people a week ago they said he was asking questions about this thing because it didn’t seem to be sturdy enough And when we’re talking about Georgia that has no gun laws or common sense regulations on guns We’re talking about a bridge that needs to support at least 200 people at any time just so they’ll be no questions of being secure and I bet you they have no regulations on that whatsoever And every single one of them state representatives are on the defense right now we replaced it just a couple years ago it has minimal maintenance because it’s aluminum there was no problem. Other than the fact that those same state regulators are the ones that bought the cheapest bridge they can find to put in there and because they have no regulations on what things and how things should be built this is what happens
