This is the BEST DIY self watering container that I have found online yet! Believe me, I have spent a lot of time reading & watching videos on different ways to do this. For a woman, I'm pretty good at find DIM (doing it myself) lol...I don't need to ask my husband for help on this at all. Home Depot is less than 1/2 a mile from my home. THANKS SOOOOO MUCH!!!

I would make one suggestion. Over the years I've found that some potting mixes are very dry and won't wick water until you wet them first so I'd water the soil in the upper bucket at the start and that should get the wicking action started faster. Most of the food places in my area don't give the buckets away but tend to charge for them, often at higher prices than the lumber yard but those at the yard may not be food safe and anything you grown in should be if you're raising something you intend to eat.

I have a lot of buckets I garden in, and this year I'm trying "air pruning" gardening, but I'll make one of these like you showed just to see how it does, and check the root structure at the end of season, and compare fruit production compared to another way, just for giggles... Thanks... good video not full of garbage... well done.

Excellent video that you give the sku numbers. Here are a couple of things I do differently or in addition to. 1. Instead of cutting the pipe on an angle, I make 4 cross cuts (2 north/south and 2 east/west and then just pull back 4 of the tabs leaving 4 tabs flush with the bucket). This makes the pipe stand straight. 2. I use a funnel to put the water in the pipe. Makes it a lot easier. 3. I put the bucket on bricks so I can put a small cup under the drain hole. My buckets are on my porch so I do not water staining the floor.

Great idea and good video. My buckets still have the lids for them so I cut a three inch hole in the center and the one on the side for the PVC pipe and that way I don't have to use the plastic bags and it seems to be working great. I planted to tomato plants at the same time to see how they would grow and the one in the bucket is about three times the size of the one in the regular planter.Thanks for posting

Very nicely done. Thanks a lot. Consistent moisture is key to healthy plants, which this system does so cheaply. As an aside, I saw someone on KZbin do a side-by-side test of popular potting mixes. Miracle Grow potting mix was the worst. I like to use plain Sunshine Mix #4 with compost, worm poo, epsom salt, and slow release veggie fert. mixed in.

This is a great idea. The one thing I would add to it is to lay a piece of weed mesh material between the dirt and the holes in the first bucket or use a blue Walmart bag. This way the dirt won't filter through or fall through to the water Good Job! Thanks!

I know there are numerous variables but (approximately) ... if I am watering tomato plant conventionally every day... how long might this method extend my watering? Could it extend the watering out to every 3 or 4 days?
@THEGREENCABBY
@THEGREENCABBY 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Faith Rada thanks for the support, if this video was helpful PLEASE SHARE it so others can get some help too! If you have the clear plastic on top as suggested 1-2 weeks. Because the evaporating water gets continuously recycled into the plant minimizing the amount of water needed and the reservoir holds about 2 gallons

Hey, maybe I missed the answer tothis, but I couldn't tell exactly where you were putting the pipe inside the bucket. Was it directly straight down in the cup? Or was it in that hole you cup earlier in the top bucket? And does it go straight down to the bottom of the bottom bucket. Also, do you have an overflow hole cut out on the bottom bucket?

Thank you for the good video. However, this is good to plant something like tomato or cucumber or something like those. But what happen if I like to plant something like spinach, onion, etc... which need to grow on the entire surface of the bucket? Do we have to take off the plastic sheet? If so, the water would be evaporated faster, right? Any better way for this case. Again, thank you for sharing the idea.

Once you have seen poverty either first hand or within documentaries it is easy to realise how some people would even struggle just to pay for soil. My idea (as please anyone chime in if you could improve upon this) would be to use a 2 litre bottle instead of a pipe. You can easily cut off the top at the shoulders and the bottom, put to one side. Then cut all the way down one side side and re taped/hot glued to make a thinner 'pipe'. The top can be turned upside down and used as a funnel to sit in the top of the pipe. If for any reason it isn't long enough then another bottle can be added. Or if too long, it can be cut. If poor people can invest in potting soil (even cheap dollar store) or mix their own etc, then they can benefit from growing food for sure.It doesn't need to be expensive. Dig through recycling bins or skips, ask friend and neighbours to save for you, ask in shops for buckets, coffee grounds, newspapers etc. borrow tools or use a nail, hammer and sharp knife. I would recommend borrowing tools though (if you do not already have them) if possible. Using inadequate tools will often get the job done but they are far more likely to cause injury.

These buckets might leach chemicals into your soil and food. Food grade 5 gallon buckets are like $15 each.
