I found you just in time!!! I have watched SO many different versions of how to make these, but saw very little follow-ups, like you. Thank you!!! I’ve 12 buckets & lids to arrive soon & need to do this right for my peppers & tomatoes. QUESTION: Will you please do another update to your 5gal bucket system???? I do not want to make cuts to buckets if not necessary. I have learned so very much from your videos, thank you truly.

Hello lisa i am going to do a new 5 gallon bucket video with a lot of up dates. i would say wait till i make the video. its coming soon so hang tight. it'll be worth the wait! you still need to get all the supplies you need so gather it little by little. if you do a search on my channel for the dwarf tomatoes last year you can see the insane results i get with this system. :: )

QUESTION: did you do a video on just making potting soil or just the seed starting mix, that amendments are added to video? If you’ve not done a full potting soil, I pretty please request one. I have a few questions, what type of Drill did you use for cutting the top of the bucket? Also what is the name of the mesh you use to keep the chipmunks and other critters out of your buckets? @HeirloomReviews
@HeirloomReviews Жыл бұрын
Just follow the instruction i told you in the video. your mixing to constructions from 2 different videos so be careful. you want about 1" airgap from the bottom of the plate that holds up the dirt and the top of the water. gravel method works good but keep the gravel about 1/2 " below that plate. the dirt will work its way into the gravel and still wick water just not as much

Great video. I live in Hawaii. I’m wondering which system (wicking or non-wicking) would work best for growing Kalo (taro). Kalo requires a lot of water or moist soil. In Hawaii, we have 2 traditional ways to grow Kalo - called upland (or dry-land), and wet land. Dry-land is basically in the ground and watered frequently. Wet land is basically a pond and the kalo is planted submerged in the water. Different varieties of Kalo adapt to either the dry or wet land systems. The kalo variety I have is basically dry-land kalo, but I want to move it out of the ground and into buckets. Any thoughts?

the point of a wicking bucket is that the soil does not contact the water, it is connected by a wicking material like the wick in an oil lamp, then the soil will not get rotten and stinky ;) You do not top water a wicking system, that is why you have a fill pipe and hole in the side of the bucket, you fill through the pipe until it runs out of the hole it is then watered for probably a week or more.. The capillary action of the wick then slowly transfers the water from the reservoir into the soil, The bucket you create here could be made much easier, simply drill drain holes 3 inches up, fill with rock to above the level of the hole and then fill up with coir, it is basically a deepwater system not a wicking system.

Louise Paisley I thought this as well. I checked comments specifically to see if someone else thought the same thing. I believe the problem is that he doesn’t have the one inch of air space between the water reservoir and the base soil level. Check out gardening with Leon.

Not to knock what you did, but this seems like a really difficult way to do Leon’s self-wicking bucket. You just need soda cans or empty water bottles in the bottom.

If you aren't doing a wicking system, why would you need a fill tube? Just top water and forget the fill tube. Fill tube is to put water in the bottom of the bucket for wicking system, which you said you are not doing anymore. Makes no sense.
@HeirloomReviews
@HeirloomReviews 4 жыл бұрын
good question, main reason is if i put the fill tube somewhere else i may as well throw it out because it has a 90% chance of getting lost.

Wow! This looks great! I'm going to go and give it a try. Do you think adding gravel to about an inch above the base would help plants like rosemary that like well drained soils? Also would this system work with the big rubbermaid containers as well? Thank you for all of these videos! They're longer, but man it's worth it cause they're filled with things other videos don't talk about. Feel much more confident I can pull it off and be aware of what might be causing issues. :)

Go for it, they work great. My only suggestion is to use the double bucket version. It's more stable, more soil volume, and easier setup with the same or larger water reservoir for a little more per bucket. @stan90m for the proof!

Thanks for the share, my target plants will also be tomatoes. One question, have you checked to see if the rocks you’re putting down below are actually allowing the water to be wicked up to the rest of the soil? I always thought that the air gap‘s between the rocks would not create the sponge affect needed to get water up into the rest of the soil.

You didn't mention to cut your drain pipe at an angle and why. It's so the water will be able to come out of the pipe which may be a problem if it sits flat on the bottom. I like this design better than the first one you did. It is less complicated.

Are you worried about using PVC in your plants? Its suggested that it leaches various bad stuff into your vegetation - hence into your body. Im still on a quest to find HDPE plastic pipes. They do exist. Or even drip tubing.
@HeirloomReviews

thats a good question yes All plastics leach "Plasticizers" but food grade "HDPE" leaches the least! if your growing in a 5 gallon bucket then your getting it anyway

Try 3/4” or 1” drip irrigation supply line. You’ll have to buy a half spool possibly a whole spool but that would last you a long long time. Bend it with a heat gun on low then cool it with cold water to have the bends set and stay. You could probably do 200 or more buckets with a single spool.
