These things take practice. I have straight hair that behaves quite well for styling, but it used to take me ages and tons of tries/lots of brushing to get it into a high ponytail. Now I can just sweep it into one. Your hands and your hair get used to things with time. There's no reason to expect everything to be instantly simple for you without practicing it, just because it can be done simply by people who *have* practiced it.
