Andy, where were you in my previous golf life. I'm 74 yrs old and stopped playing golf 5 yrs. I played for 5 decades with a goal of breaking 90 which I accomplished on occasion. Six months ago I took up You Tube golf, as I call it. I started watching a bunch of Uk golfers and got urge to get back into the game again. Problem is that I will never hit the ball like Rick Shields or Peter Finch. Both great channels but unrealistic abilities for me to attain. Then I found your channel. You have put more positive thoughts about this stupid game in my thick skill that I will be buying some clubs (7), hitting the driving range and giving it another go very shortly. Your idea's about chippers, 5, 7, and 9 woods as well as hybrid clubs will make this game much more enjoyable for me in the near future. Can't thank you enough. Now my wife, on the other hand, I think she would like to lock you in your van for the rest of the summer. Cheers

Andy. Just an idea. Do this same type video, but have a true 20+ hcp’er hitting this same set of clubs. Maybe with you coaching him around. I enjoy your golf content.
@paulbrown74252 жыл бұрын
Agree, to be honest I think a lot of these videos are generally the same content, clubs which are more forgiving etc etc, no real evidence of a average or below average player using these so called best forgiving clubs so how can they say they are the most forgiving etc etc and look at Rick shields and some off his associates who also go on about clubs, generally I don't watch their videos as they are quite boring just playing golf with their mate no real content apart from sucking up to tour player or ex pros who wasn't that haven't won any trophies lol 😂

@jake larobina Agreed. I asked Alex Elliot to think about having an out takes video as I am pretty sure most of these guys have howlers that aren't shown. Telling me about a club or technique improvement, but then having a pro demonstrate it is pointless. Have a truly average golfer with 3 or 4 beers inside him take the shot after the lesson.

Great advice, I'm off 14 and found that carrying 7 clubs over winter (5 wood 25 degree hybrid, 7, 9 iron, 54 degree wedge and putter didn't affect my scores. I started playing comps with these and can score low 80s no problem.
@tonyrusso73023 ай бұрын
Well, that's six. Are you sure you're adding your score correctly?
@DavidSmith-lo7wf2 жыл бұрын
Its always a difficult balance with stuff like this for me. Yes, I know that if I leave driver and possibly 3 wood out of play, and maybe take some of these tips I am more likely to score better/more consistent. However, I'm not always playing golf for my best score, but to have fun and most people will admit hitting it farther is usually more "fun", so the driver keeps coming out in hopes of getting one or two of those great shots that keep you coming back and trying again despite all the lost balls on the other holes. I have one vivid memory of playing most of a round with 5 iron as my longest club because the first couple holes were so frustrating with the big sticks, and I still scored at least as well as I might expect otherwise. The joys of golf. 😋
@danielcohen31592 жыл бұрын
Great video, Andy! I think you're spot on with the advice around the greens and the shots inside 100 yards or so. I'm a 4 hcp and my go-to clubs for short game are still 9-iron, gap wedge, and putter. There just aren't a lot of short shots that require a ton of loft. A bad putt is almost always better than a bad chip. A bad chip with a 9-iron is always better than a bad one with a lofted wedge. And really...just don't have a 60º wedge if you're shooting around 100. So many horrible things are going to happen and only very rarely anything good. In fact, most people down to single figures should avoid them. And the hybrid irons are a great choice for people struggling with strike. Of course, nothing will save a shank or a truly fat shot, but the sole on those irons gives you a lot of leeway. You can really miss the strike pretty badly and get a decent result. I would say that if you're using the 9-iron or PW in the Cleveland Launcher irons, you've really already got a chipper. Big head, big wide sole. You can grip it like a putter, put your hands up high, and make that smooth putting stroke. The CBX2 wedges are soooo easy to use, too. The best part of this video is the advice about not trying to kill the ball and taking a 3/4 swing or half swing and simply advancing the ball. Stay straight-ish and stay in play. I do think the 100-shooter should have a driver, just because the head is so big and there's so much face to hit the ball with. But they should be gripping down a good bit and taking a 3/4 swing. A 5-wood is a good choice off the tee once you're striking the ball somewhat consistently. But for a lot of people the 5-wood is going to be harder to hit than a driver, simply because the hitting area is so much smaller. But then again, it will be perfect for a lot of folks, as well!

Spot on, I’ve noticed at the club I play with a lot of the members chip and run, some from 60-80 yards rather than loft the shot in. This is at a club where we have small greens and a tight course so accuracy is key to scoring ( hence I don’t score well 😞) feeling is putter from the edges of greens always better than trying 8/9 irons. I only use my 60 deg in bunkers and if need to go over a green side bunker
@rdj3video2 жыл бұрын
The CBX2 wedges are great, but I can also see how Cleveland’s C, G, and S wedges of the Smart Sole line is really all a golfer needs if they are in that 94-104 range. I too would have to add Driver to this mix. I do enjoy the 5W off the deck and will sprinkle it in off the tee. 7W is also helpful when needing a little less distance/little more height. I do however struggle with the 5 hybrid unless mashing it out of rough. Everything else pointed out in this video is spot on with how I try to simplify. I have more than a full bag, but realize I don’t need to use all the clubs if I have identified problem areas even after practicing. I feel fine with a strong 37 degree 9 iron, but the 28 degree 7 iron will yield to a shockingly helpful Thomas Golf 11 Wood when teeing it up on a 165-180ish par 3. A chipper takes practice to build the confidence as it can become more useful the farther you get from that area where we should entertain just putting it unless a bad lie is blocking your putt to the pin.

Nearly my bag. 5 wood, 9 wood, 7 hybrid, (strong) 9 iron, gap wedge, cavity back wide sole 54 & 60 degree wedges. I do still have a “Thriver” (13.5 degree driver lofted up to 14.5 with a 3wood length shaft) which I use on certain courses. Don’t have a chipper but so far I have found my ultra wide sole hybrid like 9 iron has worked well for that type of shot. I went down this route due to osteoarthritis and dramatically reduced mobility and swing speed. I also cheat with an armlock putter which helps with standing much more upright. The result of all this, hand on heart I’m regularly going round in about 6 to 7 shots better than I did with a full bag. I actually have to retire golf balls that get worn out !

Great advice. I’m a 7.2 index and I have a 5w; 7w; 4&5 hybrids in the bag. No chipper or Mallet Putter but the course management aspect of the game is critical in terms of lowering scores and playing to strengths. Keep it simple. Great vid.

I’ve ditched my driver and play with a Ping G425 5 wood, a Mizuno STX200 7 wood and a 2007 Callaway Big Bertha 9 wood (£35 on eBay) at the top of my bag. Irons are Cleveland CBX 6 to PW. Wedges are Cleveland CBX 52 56 and a 60 full face . I have a Mazel 45 degree chipper for when my chipping goes down hill and an ancient cheapo Donnay blade putter. I have various Hybrids in my garage but I find my 9 or 7 woods are better for rescuing a poor tee shot. Love your videos Andy and thanks for the advice on 7 and 9 woods. Best things I’ve put in my bag. Only this afternoon I hit my 9 wood onto the green from the tee 178 yards. It stopped dead due to the height it came down from. I could never do that with an iron.

Found Andy The Average Golfer the other day and love his videos and the advise he gives. He like Rick Shiels makes it fun. This video is helping me to rethink my club selection. As soon as the weather improves here I am going to put in play the advise Andy has given in this video. 😎⛳️

Wonderful video. I especially love your tone and the way you communicate. Course management, simplifying and using the type of clubs that are easier to hit are exactly what I am looking to do now, so your video was spot on and extremely relevant. I was a 10 handicap and shot in the low 80's but am now consistently in the low 90s due to playing only once a week. I have been using a chipper and a mallet putter and am seriously considering purchasing a full set of Cleveland halo launcher irons. The only thing holding me back is that I would love to test them first before investing the $900. I am exactly on the wavelength of everything you just mentioned in this video. Thank you for the reinforcement 🙂

I’ve had a Ping 7 wood in my bag for the past year and it’s one of my favourite clubs. I play off 13 with average swing speed and sweeping stroke so struggle to hit long irons ( 6 iron carry 130, total 145), whereas my 7 wood gives me confidence,control and distance (carry 160+, total 175+). Considering Ping 9 wood at 23.5’ to fill the gap rather than try a hybrid. Excellent video with lots of explanation of why this makes sense.

Great content right there from both the club and course management POV. The only thing I would add is tee it forward until you’re breaking 100 consistently before moving back. Say the average PGA tour course is 7,500 yards and the av. drive 300 yards giving a ratio of 25. If you hit the ball 200 yards the equivalent course length would only be 5000 yards. Golf is hard tee it forward people.

Brilliant video Andy. Really enjoyed this view. I can validate this content, for me anyway. Played Adlington Heritage course. Longest club was my 7 wood, used 5h, 7 and wedges. Should have admittedly, used my chipper on at least 3 occasions. 🤦♂️Still, i played the most controlled golf game, for me, in a while. Age has reduced my swing speed dramatically and having the fairway control with my clubs, because I have no need to kill it, meant pars were more frequent. I've also realised over the past 2 years of watching you, that I've taken on, quite a bit of your advice. 3w 7w 5h chipper and moving from a blade putter after 35 years to a mid mallet. Great video. If we could keep testosterone out of our game all us mid to high handicapper’s would lower our scores. Guy Canada 🇨🇦

Problem with most weekend warriors is ego. We'll all think we got to out do our buddies. And then you look even more foolish cuz you too that 3 wood off the deck instead of hitting a hybrid or 6 iron. I am guilty of this as much as anyone. I play Friday. I will play with no ego and see how I do. Wish me luck in my journey to break 100

You definitely don't need 14 clubs, half set less to think about
