OK... Well, you're preaching to the choire, here. I'm an old guy (86, but healthy as a horse) who's still a 6 from the middle tees, and I play with 8 clubs in a small leather bag slung over my shoulder. I carry 2 woods (Driver and strong 7 wood), 4/6/8/P/S irons and my beloved Wide Flange Heavy Bullseye putter. I LOVE hitting half and 3/4 shots, and I'm a very adept chipper. I'm careful with positioning so as to minimize the inevitable mis-hits, and I always walk the course to stretch out those big muscles you really use to hit golf balls. We have 2 threesomes of old farts who play this way (8 clubs max, and you have to walk, pull/push carts allowed but almost never used). All 6 of us are single-digit handicappers, and it's a riotous occasion when somebody loses a ball or hits one OB...first round's on him! There's plenty of oaths and swearing, but anger is not part of the game; save your bad temper for something important (like football or politics). Enjoy the beauty of even an average course, the comraderie of your playing partners and thank the gods that you didn't take up tennis!

After watching this video, I played seven clubs today. Driver, putter, hybrid, 6, 8, 54, PW. Scored a 79, which is one under my average! Didn't miss the other clubs - not once. I'm going to play these same clubs several more rounds to see if it will become my new normal. Surely lighten the bag, better control of each club, and more focus on the course. All my youth golf was played with a half set, pretty normal back in those days. Normally 3w & 4w or 3i, then 5i, 7i, 9i, W and putter . You’re right about getting used to fewer clubs and using them in a number of different ways, Andy, I used to play against my then retired great uncle, he had even fewer clubs, and was tough to beat. I remember asking him why he didn’t carry a sand wedge, his response…”I don’t go in bunkers”, and he never did! Mostly 3w, 7i and putter for him. Saw him get a slam dunk hole-in-one with the 7i. Beat me frequently at snooker in the clubhouse afterwards too. Bloody annoying all round, but a great character. 😂 Photo comp….Andy B for me this week.

If you were to arrange a golf tour where participants would come and play 6 to 10 of your favorite off the beaten track courses, I would come over from the States in a heart beat. Most golf tours in the UK visit the premium tracks at a super premium price. I would much more enjoy all these tracks you go to that are hidden gems without the crowds or high prices. My small bag is pretty much same as yours, except I carry 16.5 degree 4 wood instead of driver as I can use it off the tee and the fairway; beyond that, its: 4 hybrid, 6 and 8 irons, pitching wedge, and 54 degree sand wedge. I will typically play a course length of 6,300 - 6,500 yards. I am a 62 year old, 6 handicap and what's interesting is that I will frequently break 80 more often than when I carry all 14 clubs in the bag. Golfing three years and still a high handicapper but shooting 42 on back 9 despite the two blow up holes was a massive improvement for me (just got into high 90s at start of this year). As soon as you pulled out the 6i, I realised that’s pretty much what you’d be going for too. When I started playing golf as a kid, my brother and I shared a full set - he got the odd-numbered clubs (1w, 3w, 3, 5, 7, 9), while I got the even-numbered clubs (2w, 4, 6, 8, PW). Still to this day (some 50+ years later), I still go to the even-numbered clubs when I am in trouble and need confidence to hit a good shot . . .

Its so interesting how the mind works but your confidence was built with the even numbers, crazy

Great video Andy. I often play with a half set or a few random clubs during the winter months when its carry on and you certainly have to get more creative and it definitely helps a lot.

Yes being more creative is good for your game

I would surely be interested in playing with you at an event! Sounds amazing! Just a short trip from over in the Netherlands. I am actually travelling to Canterbury next week, to play golf. My only dread is driving on the left side!

Thats great to hear, good luck with the driving, on course and off

Congrats on 100k Andy 🎉.. I take full set and trolley if going away with mates for a trip, otherwise I use stand bag or Sunday bag and odds or evens as I call ‘em. Driver, 5 wood, 4 hybrid, 6 iron, 8 iron, PW, AW, 56 & Putter (9 clubs) .. I find biggest drawback to playing ‘lite’ is how many balls to take and waterproofs!

You do get to play some wonderful courses all due to your hard work, Andy B for me this week

Wonderful content. I made this switch last year to 7 clubs full time. I love it. Trying to convert more of my friends. 😊

Its surprising how well it works

@@TheAverageGolfer I’m a firm believer and advocate for it. I’d love to see a lot more people try it. 7 clubs and move up a tee to have fun. Make things more enjoyable.

I would carry a Taylormade SLDR 3 wood, Ping Eye2 6 and 9 iron, 60 degree wedge and putter.

As a senior golfer, playing from the senior tees makes it easier to carry less clubs 👍

Decades ago we would occasionally walk 9 holes carrying a pre-decided # of clubs and play a little match w. cheap booze afterwards of course (or during play). It started with only one club (I would choose the 5 iron because that is how Seve and I learned to play) ::), but we also did it with 2,3, and 4 clubs. It is remarkable what you can do with a 5 iron. I think everyone should have some sort of utility club in the bag for a number of reasons...these days it would be the 5 wood for me for when i am walking and dont want to carry so many clubs. I;m with you on not needing a bag full of wedges..For me it is PW, 52, and 58. Props to you on a great idea for a KZbin, combining golf with travel to great golf courses off the beaten path

Thanks for your feedback and the Seve reference, I love trying to play shots I am not good enough to execute but like to be Seve for a short while!

@@TheAverageGolferit was a 4 iron Seve learned to use on a beach. There is film of him playing out of a bunker, short sided, with 4 iron.

Use a full set around 10 to 12 yards difference each club , a few courses in play a club suits a particular hole and I hit it well on the hole , do sometimes go out with a driver 7 iron pw and 58, putter

Think I could do with a 1w,5w,4h, 6/7/8/9/p/54deg/putter. Thats the minimal to feel comfortable at the course.

54 degree wedges used to be common 60 plus years ago, at least over here in North America. They were called dual wedges, dual purpose wedges or do-all wedges in those days. It fit between the classic 51-52 degree pitching wedges of those days and a 56 degree sand wedge. A lot of people would carry just the one wedge along with 4 woods 1-4 and 8 irons 2-9. Most pros in those days would drop the brassie in order to carry 2 wedges, but not all club golfers did that. My parents carried 1 wedge in their sets. Interestingly, my dad rarely carried his full set. Most of the time he'd carry Driver, 3 wood, the odd number irons, his wedge, and a putter.

I like that strategy though I haven't gone that far (7 clubs) yet but I will soon. I got a "sunday bag" and plan to walk a local course now that the weather is moderating. When I first started out, I KNEW a driver wasn't for me so I used my trusty 3 wood a lot but now that I'm good with my driver, my 3 wood hardly sees any use. Most of my chipping and pitching is now done with my short irons in different swings so I've trimmed back wedges. Linden Hall looks like a beautiful course but sadly, I'm not in the UK and not sure the non-golfing wife would second a destination golf trip! As for photos, seems like Tracey has the better eye!

Looks like you only took your driver back to a 9 O'clock position and then drove right through. Good for you. My problem is at 71 I need to get more exercise and I know I can pick up 10-15 or maybe even 20 yards on all my clubs. Right now I am only getting my 9 iron to around 105 yards for instance, 8 110, 7 115, 6 125, 5 130-135. Last year I hit the ball further but I used some type of resistance training aid that I didn't use this year. Makes quite a difference. Got to pick it back up.
