My tip would to try blind pours. It’s really hard to not be effected by packaging, brand name, price, or your past experience with a whisky. I once poured Wild Turkey 101 for a buddy and made up some elaborate story about it being a small batch-single barrel-private reserve-limited release-special anniversary-distiller’s edition and he said it was the most amazing thing he had ever had. (Yes, I know I’m a terrible friend)

Blending is also a good way to save money for those of us on a budget. What I like to do is blend something cheap (100 Pipers scotch) with an Islay (Laphroaig) at roughly 4:1, and I feel like I'm drinking a very tasty scotch for a lot less than just drinking Laphroaig straight all the time. Seriously, anyone on a budget should try it. Very good bang for buck.

This will help most people from being confused by marketing gimmicks placed on bottle labels. I hope people will watch this a few times to get the details. Killed it again dudes! My tip for any nubie is not to get too caught up on age statements. I think a lot of people new to whisky think older must mean better. As I've continued my funky adventure in whiskey I have actually discovered that I generally prefer youngish bottlings (around 12 yrs old). I just like the lively, fresh, energetic flavour that younger spirit driven whiskey gives you. Plus it's cheaper too!

You should try an infinity bottle. Anytime a bottle has just a little left, pour it into a bottle you use strictly for a blend of everything you drink. It will evolve into a different whiskey all the time, and you will be amazed at how good it can be at times. At this point, mine is a blend of probably close to 30 whiskies. Started it maybe 3 years ago.

Woah, what a great intro to whisky appreciation -nice one! I was recently introduced to something that seemed completely counterintuitive to me, but I tried it and it really allowed the nose to present beautifully on a few new whiskies. Rather than adding a drop of water, which is my normal practice, I was advised to ever so slightly warm the glass before pouring. Really opens the whisky right up. But again, thanks! Long time watcher, of KZbin in general, first time commenter on any video ever. Check my history. Anyway, this video is almost a perfect distillation of the Tribe. Rex is serious but also showcasing a calmness and knowledge that I love but which we rarely see, well the calmness anyway, with just a hint of insanity. Brianna, is toned by by 80%, which for the video is perfect. Her level of energy is perfect. As much as I love seeing her in videos it feels like she's supposed to be 'the wacky one", but since Rex is already wacky its a little overwhelming. I loved how Daniel made what felt like a surprise appearance. His ability to blend within 4 bottles is always amazing to watch and I don't recall seeing it in a while. Loved this!
@DGPHolyHandgrenade2 жыл бұрын
The best tip I have for newbies, works for me, is to get past the burn and get the flavor of the whisky. Take the smallest sip possible and lick your lips. You're just wetting your mouth at this point. The burn will happen, but when it subsides, it's less likely to come back so take another sip at that point and bam, no more burn. If you're very new to whiskey or you dont drink often, that ethanol burn is just a fact of life; it's not something that will just go away (from my experience anyway). This will help you enjoy the whiskey and it will open up all the flavors there are in that glass without being covered by the harsh ethanol.
@RickTCPB2 жыл бұрын
I agree - was going to post the same thing; I think Rex/Daniel have always described it in function as being similar to taking the first sip of hot coffee. It's not only made my own experience more enjoyable, but I've been able to convert a couple of others who swore they could never drink whiskey neat (w/out some sort of chaser).

Okay Whiskey Tribe, I have a serious curve ball to throw y'all. I'm brand new to bourbon specifically and adult beverages generally (and I'm 45 years old). I want to become a bourbon hobbyist, BUT I can't smell anything, and I can only taste the basics: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory). I want to stay away from bitterness because bitter sucks. Why deal with bitter when there are four other funner flavor options? I've got a good collection of whiskeys going--mostly bourbon--and I've found that I really like sweeter wine as well. Will y'all entertain a few newby questions? 1) Are there any whiskeys that are obviously sweet? What are they? 2) Are there any whiskeys that are obviously sour? What are they? 3) Are there any whiskeys that are obviously salty? What are they? 4) Would it be weird to mix whiskey with wine? I'm completely open to any help and suggestions you may have.

I don't know about whiskey, but in blended fuels (10% ethanol- 90% Gasoline,) if you have a .05% water to 99.95% fuel, the ethanol will absorb the water and become heaver, causing it to separate from the gasoline. This is known as Phase Separation and could be the cause of the "adding water" phenomenon.
