Yep. I regret selling games back to eb games back in the day. But i was a kid and couldn’t afford to buy as many games as i wanted to play. On the other hand, it did enable me to experience a lot of cool games during the 90s and early 2000. My biggest regret is selling of my Dreamcast collection. When I was in college. It was such a unique and weird system when it came out. Plus it had marvel vs capcom 2 and the very odd tamigochi style memory cards that often had gameplay implications in jprpgs on that system.

Xenosaga 3 was the only one I didn't buy new, because I didn't complete the first two games. I ended up buying it CIB for $20 at Microplay before the used market went berserk.

I bought mine for 120 at an anime convention and I've never even played it. I just can't finish Xenosaga 2 cuz the gameplay is so bad.

I lucked out as episode 3 wasn’t on my radar when it released I found it “new” at a GameStop a few years later last copy where they opened it and put the case out for display. Picked it up for $50 and have it proudly displayed with the rest of the trilogy on my shelf behind my Pyra and Mythra statues

I'm very lucky to have a near-mint condition copy of Xenosaga Episode 3, mostly because I was one of the (I assume) 6 people in the US who pre-ordered the game as soon as the release date dropped. It's a goddamn tragedy that it's so inaccessible - it's an incredible end to the series and I would love it if more people had an easier chance to play it.

Is it worth going through the 2nd game to get to? I have all 3 and beat 1 about 2 years ago. But I've only heard bad things about two (decent things about the DS re-release), and good things about 3.

Sega gave this game second chance to sell well on Gamecube, and flopped two times (after Gamecube version flop they canceled PS2 port of this game). If i recall Dreamcast version sold in 30k copies, and Gamecube version in 100k copies. Bad release date (same week with Tales of Symphonia on Gamecube, and Final Fantasy IX + Final Fantasy X overshadowed nearly every jrpg at 2000-2002) = mission failed. Unfortunaetely this game is dead alongside developer (their last game was Valkyria Chronicles 4 in 2018 which also flopped). On other hand EVERY Sega Japan franchise aside of Sonic and Yakuza flopped or had underperforming sales since 20 years. Sonic fans just buying only Sonic, Yakuza fans just buying only Yakuza, Persona fans just buying only Persona.

This is why emulators are so important. How would most of us ever get to enjoy these games if we had had to pay these price tags. Honestly i wouldnt be a fan of the star oceans, tales series, the Ys series, and the soul blazer trilogy (which they need a remake sooooo bad) if i never had the chance to play them 20yrs ago

Little tip for people after Tales of Eternia is import the psp version from the UK as it's region free and obviously all in English. It's about £20 (30-35 dollars)

Thank god for emulation and hacked machines able to play roms from SD cards. It doesn't help collectors but if all you want is to play these games then emulation and hacked consoles are brilliant.

It’s scary I own most of the games notably EO3, Path of Radience, and DQ5 I bought at market price. A good rule of them thumb for getting what may be rare games is that the games made at the end of consoles lifecycle are usually worth more especially niche JRPG cause they do not have huge print runs.

@@Blernster I bought those games because at the time with games like DQ5 and Path of Radiance I was already a fan of the franchise. EO3 was a spur of the moment decision based on my love games made by ATLUS. It’s weird to see these games spike in value so much it’s like I can easily sell these games and make some nice money in the process. Of course I really don’t want to sell them because of how unique they are especially with EO3 and DQ5 as they have features you can only really experience on a Nintendo DS.

You can probably get the Japanese releases of Valkyrie Profile and Chrono Trigger CIB for around the equivalent of the $5-$10 USD range. While there was larger distribution of these games in Japan than there was in the West, that isn't the only reason the prices of these games are so high. It also isn't just because of an increase in demand due to younger generations of gamers now also being interested in these games. If you look at the timeline of game prices on Pricecharting, you'll see that a lot of these games skyrocketed in price during the last 5 years. Part of that is due to people staying indoors due to covid increasing the demand for video games, but another part of it is that there are far more individual game resellers than there were in the past and many of them engage in practices that cause game prices to go up considerably. Most people can't find good deals on games anymore because the resellers aggressively go after those and then turn around and sell those games for considerably higher prices. After this goes on for a while, especially with certain highly sought-after games, the market value tends to go up a lot. These resellers might claim what they are doing is fair because they are selling at market value, but they are also the ones setting the market value and increasing it, so it isn't fair at all. That's why I was able to buy a CIB copy of Snatcher on the Sega CD for $80 back in 2009, but it goes for $1,194.80 USD today for a CIB copy. That kind of skyrocketing in price doesn't happen without people actively manipulating a market to sell games for as much as possible and to hype the rarity of a game to greatly increase the price of it. These resellers add nothing of value and all they functionally do is make people who actually want to own games have to pay more for them just because they want to make a profit. Sleazy resellers like that are parasites, especially when it comes to the gaming communities interested in retro games, games with low print runs, and limited release games. They are essentially doing what scalpers do, yet they don't get the kind of hate that scalpers get because people don't understand the dynamics behind what they are actually doing.

I'm amazed how many of these I have tucked away someplace. I don't have Song of the Ocean, EO3, or the PSX release of Persona 1, but I've actually got the other four. They're fantastic games, especially the Xenosaga trilogy, but not at those kinds of price tags. I suspect the remaster of EO3 will cause a decrease in the demand for the original (at least outside of collectors), but we'll see. SMT: Nocturne was also wildly expensive and hard to find for a while, but then it got an unexpected reprinting in the late 00s/early 10s, and the price tag normalized substantially at that point.

Really wild that Xenosaga 3 was worth so much. I still have the disc in great condition but lost the case and manual a few years ago thanks to a fire. Really enjoy the games even with their long cutscenes, especially the combat system for 2.

At one point Song of the Ocean was as high as $300 but thankfully that $200 price point is much more common. Loved the first two games but I’ve yet to play SotO

You are totally right! Path of Radiance benefited massively from Awakening giving the fan base a huge popularity and numbers boost and Smash brothers made sure everyone knew who Ike was, leading to the inevitable search for his game title. Top quality video as always!

Xenosaga 3 as little as it sold even has an alternate version with a Lenticular cover. I finally found a copy of Song of the Ocean recently and paid a premium for it 😬. These are quite the spendy games! Thanks TKN!

i have Tales of Destiny 2 (Eternia), Xenosaga 3 (bought from ebay in like maybe 2017 for $65 I think), and Persona which I had no idea was worth a lot of money. I also have Tales of Destiny 1, Suikoden 2, Valkyrie Profile, Brigandine, Tactics Ogre, and probably some other PS1 games that are worth quite a bit. They are my treasure, so I have no plans of selling them.

I love Xenosage but originally for some reason never bought the 3rd game, most likely because I was young and never completed the 2nd game. However about 10 years or so ago I bought a used copy on ebay for I think around $40-50, so I lucked out pretty good on that one. So glad I finished my Dragon Quest collection when I did, prices for the whole series it seems have gone up quite a bit. Hope someday Square Enix does a proper rerelease for the Zenithian games, so hard to recommend to my friends when their options at this point are pretty much just emulate or play on mobile.

Good list. I own two titles in this list, Etrian Odyssey III and Dragon Quest V. Luckily I got them for much cheaper many years ago. That said, it's likely more of these titles will get remasters down the line. Xenosaga is likely next out of all the titles in the list. And Persona's PSP remake might get ported if ATLUS ever decide to do anything with Persona 1 and 2 again more than references.

Nice list! I am happy to say I own the top 4. Tales of Destiny 2, Xenosaga 3 (Lenticular Cover Variant), Path of Radiance, and Revelations Persona all Cib and in great shape. I have 3 other Rpgs that even top those 4 which would complete my top 7. At number 3, would be Magic Knight Rayearth for the Sega Saturn. Number 2 would be Lucienne’s Quest for the 3DO, and finally number 1 for me would be Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Sega Saturn. Happy to have all 3 Cib and in great shape and they trounce all the others in value and are great games in their own right. Cheers!

I have a few very rare games, i think the one thats worth the most currently is panzer dragoon saga, i was a little surprised to not see it on here. I was quite surprised to see a fair few other titles not included also, but still, a decent list. All nintendo exclusives, particularly collectors editions end up going for crazy money. Always better to buy Nintendo's version of a game if its multiplatform and you intend to sell it after you're finished with it, they sell for more, more limited runs and a lot of Nintendo fans have big brand loyalty.

I have all 3 Xenosaga games Complete-In-Box and seeing how much it's worth now makes it very tempting to sell it...poor health makes it impossible for me to earn an income and on top of that, I no longer have a ps2 or a backwards compatible ps3 since that kicked the bucket on me. So, I can't even enjoy the physical copies anyway. I can always just emulate them, too, so at this point I'm really not all that attached to them.

I went into this fully expecting the Tellius games, but I was surprised to see Etrian Odyssey III on here. I must've picked it up before it got expensive, because I didn't remember shelling out a lot for it. Guess I should count myself lucky. And in regard to Path of Radiance... Yeesh. I think I paid a cool $200 or so for it and Radiant Dawn when I got them and thought *that* was expensive. Doubt it'll be going down any time soon either. May be worth noting that Persona did see a remaster on the psp. I had rented the ps1 version from blockbuster when i was a kid, but appreciated the quality of life improvements in the psp version. Even that version is expensive these days.

Still own two copies of Xenosaga 3 I bought 7 years ago when playing through the trilogy, one of them mint CIB at the time for $120 and the other one $90 off of a friend brand new factory sealed (PS2 games in the mid to late 00s didnt have a sony security sticker anymore just the y fold seal). The sealed copy alone is now going for well over $400, yep definitely not letting go of any of my retro games anytime soon if at all Xenogears on PS1 sealed and VGA graded now goes for $7000...

Even at Xenosaga 3's release it was almost impossible to find, I spent nearly 6 months chasing that mofo down and I will never part with it now.

I have DQ5 on ds still sealed, I would never sell it though as I love those games and want to play it but now i'm afraid to open it lol

Bought a sealed copy of DQ:V just last month for £80. Big RIP to CEX and the other sellers who wanted £160 for a pre owned copy. :^)

I got lucky with Xenosaga episode 3, only had to spend 60 dollars when I bought it in 2020 at a used video game store. Also bought the other Saga games. 1 was 9.99, while 2 was 14.99. Best deal I ever got to be honest.

True suffering is being a shoot-em-up player. These prices are humble compared to what you need to shell out for the most sought after shmups. Games like: Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire Magical Chase Battle Mania Daiginjou all over $1,000 each!

my xenosaga 3 is actually unopened lol. i hated the 2nd one so much that i never finished it to actually start the 3rd. everytime i started 2 in order to power through i'd just get sick of the game and quit it for years only to try from the beginning later. it's been a vicious cycle. I've also got the persona for playstation. but it's opened and i happily played the hell out of it as a kid. not even sure if the disc would still be in good condiation as i've got my ps1 and ps2 boxed away these days.

Xenosaga 3 and Tales of Destiny 2 which I bought day 1 were $50 each. Persona 1 and 2, i bought it used for $30 back then. The only one i still think I overpay and expensive base on my opinion is Fire Emblem Path of Radiance $75 (bought 4-5 years ago). Here is 1 stupidly expensive and rare to get that it was once affordable. Magic Knight Rayearth was the last game to bring to the Sega Saturn. I bought it at $20 @ Toyrus in 1998 when the Saturn was at the end of it's life cycle. Now, it fetches over $1200+. My foresight of pricing games were in the mid 90s as I start collecting rpgs and strategy games as those will retain it's value and increase later on. Though i do branch of to fighting and horror, i do collect those but limited to rpg as being the focus point. So I do have most of these hard and rare rpg.

Other rpg i have are Wild arms series, Suikoden series plus tactics, Saiyuki, .hack series plus GU, shadow heart series, bof series, persona series, smt series, tales series, star ocean series, artonelico series, atelier series, Legaia series, and many more. And then there are strategy games such as Dragon Force which I highly recommend and it's way better than FF tactics.
