Wow! This hasn’t been my experience at all. I’m almost 60 and retired 2 years ago. A year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes with an A1c of 8.0. I was horrified! At the urging of a friend, I read Dr Joel Fuhrman’s book “Eat to Live”. This convinced me how I needed to change my diet from Oreos and Pepsi, to fruits and vegetables. Hating vegetables, I gravitated to more fruits than vegetables. Bananas, grapes, mandarin oranges, pears, and peaches, are my main fruit supply. Broccoli, kale, and beans are my main non-fruits. Since making the switch, my A1c has dropped to 5.2 and stayed there, and my weight dropped 100 pounds from 280 to 180. My total cholesterol is right around 100. I am stronger now than ever in my life, I have a 6-pack now (first time ever), and I’ve been able to discontinue all 5 of my daily medications. I do no routine exercise or strength training - just work hard out in the yard and with DIY projects in the house. I’m not taking any meds now on a daily basis. I feel absolutely great!! I respect what you say, but my personal experience has been the opposite. I’m not sure what to make of your message.

That's awesome. For type 2 diabetis, losing weight is the best way to reverse it. You can do that with carbs or no carbs. The way you're eating is the healthiest no doubt. Keto works too, but it's not nearly as healthy as the way you eat. I started on keto, my a1c dropped tremendously, but other blood markers got worse. I started to adjust and ended up with a diet that is still lower in carbs around 60 to 80 grams per day all coming from blueberries, strawberries, pomegranate, potatoes and the carbs in yogurt, nuts and veggies. I switched to lean cuts of meats, but i then add monosaturated fats to it. My health is better, aic is still good, i can workout harder and recover faster. Perhaps, who knows, later on I may move to something like what you're doing.

When knowledge of carbohydrate counting to be used to calculate fast acting insulin dosages became known, I have been doing that. Currently, I use a Continuous Glucose Moniter (CGM) which allows me to avoid Highs and especially the low blood glucose levels regardless of what I eat. I still am occasionally above or slightly below my suggested blood glucose range, but I haven't had a serious deviation for a long time. I still love fruit after being on keto for over a year. I stick to berries, avocados, cucumbers and olives. If your wife likes berries and nuts and seeds, I came up with a cereal early on to satisfy my cereal cravings. It's 1/4 cup berry of choice, 1/4 cup of a nut of choice (peanuts, almonds pecan, etc), 1/4 cup of either salted sunflower seeds or shelled pumpkin seeds. Melt 1 tbsp of butter or coconut oil and pour it over the berry and nuts and seeds. Then add 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk. Sometimes I'll add a little Stevia for sweetness but not all the time. It is really good! Sometimes, if I have ebough carbs left, I'll add some 100% peanut butter (1tbsp). I love Smucker's it's just peanuts and salt. And it's so yummy! I don't have this every day. But it makes a good breakfast or dessert and it's surprisingly very filling for such a tiny amount. I actually prefer that over storebought cereal now because it fills me up for long periods of time. And I get a little fruit in it.

I was diagnosed with prediabetes and my doctor pushed metformin on me even though I told her I wanted to get it under control with my diet. She told me metformin was a miracle drug and she was afraid I would become diabetic over the next few years unless I took this magical pill. I trusted her and started taking metformin. I never got any of the common side effects that most people suffer on metformin. I did lose 20 lbs but I did cut out a lot of simple sugars in my diet. After a few months of taking metformin I started having what I thought were anxiety attacks. I never correlated these attacks with metformin. After 3 years of these sporadic attacks I discovered I was having bouts of hypoglycemia brought on by the metformin. I've been off of metformin for 8 days and the first 5 or 6 days were horrible. I am finally feeling normal. I'm not keen on the keto diet and I eat whole grains for their fiber. Fiber is very beneficial to digestion and it slows down the absorption of sugar. I don't think all fruits are great because they aren't. Bananas, strawberries, grapes, raisins and many other fruits are loaded with sugar. But there are fruits when eaten in moderation are a great source of fiber. These fruits would include apples, pears and the like. It is also important to eat lots of green vegetables. The keto diet seems to be extreme and has its own side effects. The important thing to remember when trying to rid yourself of prediabetes is stay away from simple sugars, watch your portions and get off your lazy ass and exercise. There's no need to jog. Go for a brisk walk around the neighborhood. Go to the gym and exercise an hour about 3 or 4 times a week. Put down the phone and turn off the TV.

And the last four are on the totally boring list of fruits. Did anyone pay attention to a doctor of natural medicine from India. His research showed that the blood sugar meters that we use cannot differentiate between the different types of sugars that enter our bodies namely glucose and fructose and would give the same bad reading if a diabetic was to consume too much of either one of them. A blood glucose meter is a machine but our body isn't meaning to say that fruits and the fructose we consume are perfectly alright for a diabetic to consume as the Indian gentleman doctor proved after following through to see if there were any complications that the diabetics on a fruit, vegetable and meat diet faced in the short term and also a long term of five years!

Also learned that even if the child showed symptoms of having low blood sugar to double check with a blood test before giving him anything. Been a few occasions despite the symptoms, he actually was way too high. And also found out at one point why he kept spiking. Not because of food. But playdoe! He had a tendancy to lick his fingers after playing with the stuff, before he went and washed his hands. It was the Salt causing the issue. After we banned him from playing with the stuff, he didn't spike as much. I guess everyone is different. I had a very good friend who was a diabetic (type II). He ate fruit nearly every day of his life. Bananas, peaches, watermelon, and grapes were his favorites. He even drank wine and beer (not heavily). Never smoked. He lived to be 82 with the disease. Never had heart or circulation problems. From what I have seen (just from my own personal observations, I am not a medical professional) diabetes always seems to be worse in the people who are heavy drinkers and heavy tobacco users.

From what I've seen there's a big difference between the sweet cherries that are usually eaten fresh and the tart ones used for pies etc--much lower amount of sugar in the tart ones. If you buy them canned they are usually packed in water so no added sugar to avoid; they are becoming widely available as unsweetened frozen. Good stuff.

Surely the sugar levels in bananas depend on when you actually eat the banana if you leave it to go black then the sugar content is astoundingly high. I am a diabetic and I eat bananas maybe two or three times a month when they are just turning yellow from green. As for no nutrients in bananas they contain Potassium which helps lower blood pressure they also have magnesium and vitamins C and B6, it's disingenuous to state they have no nutritional value. That being said there are more foods out there of course that can provide the same if not more benefits than bananas.

Great advice. In 1978, when I first entered nursing the prevailing notion was that total calories were all important, so fat at 9 calories per gram and simple carbs at 4 calories per gram, had to be computed. So a low fat diet with fruits and simple carbohydrates was favored over a diet with fats and oils. Shockingly, we would tide diabetics over night with a bedtime snack of angel food cake or fruit cocktail or with a sugary gelatin dessert. Part of the problem was a certain doctor, Dr. Ancel Keys, during World War 2, studying starvation, came up with a theory that the consumption of fat, especially saturated fat, was evil; causing a huge dietary shift in the 1950s to margarine and low fat, but higher carbohydrate diets. Even today, dietitians are faced with a dilemma, where in school they are taught to avoid all fats in the diet, yet have to incorporate contradictory diabetic teaching that with an emphasis on reducing simple carbs and incorporating some fats is okay for diabetics with underlying cardiovascular disease.

TG I don't really like any of these! Never been a big fruit person, but I have added oranges (whole fruit only - no juices!) back into my diet = 1 orange AFTER eating any kind of beef, which seems to nip kidney stones in the bud & help with digestion (i.e. no constipation). Funny but this routine hails back to my childhood diet WHEN I WAS SKINNY! We ate a lot of beef, real dairy (butter, cheese, etc.) & always had apples & oranges on hand - of which I always preferred oranges. My body knew what to do, even if I didn't.

As a diabetic I have experienced that it is a must to reduce carbohydrates. But eating, any fruit , according to one’s energy needs can help control . It can help us from lowering levels of blood sugar to harmful levels! Neutritional needs , bowl motion and filling tummy are also catered for by fruit in take. Yes diligence can be exercised on high fruticose varieties. Diabetics by diet control can feel energy drains, at times. This can be effectively dealt with fruit intake.

Iʻve been doing keto for 3 years now and "only" have berries, with a meal, following the glycemic index recommendations. Yesterday I watched a Dr. Rob Cywes video talking about the "rules" for eating keto food, and the "rule" he proposes for fruit is NO. NO fruit, except avocados, tomatoes, olives, nuts and seeds. No berries, and of course no other fruits, if youʻre diabetic or prediabetic or just turning yourself around now that youʻre on keto.

Dr. Berry, When I saw your video came up, I was curious to know which fruits you'd mention. Surprisingly, papaya does "not" spike my blood sugar (I also eat the seeds)! I've a fairly big piece at the end of my healthy breakfast (low-carb, moderate fat, and protein), at least 4 times weekly. I've been doing many tests throughout the years, so I know what does or doesn't spike my blood sugar. Btw, we have to experiment to see what works and what doesn't for us; one of my sisters can "not" eat papaya, whereas I can. I don't eat the other fruits that you've shown because they spike my blood sugar through the roof! I also can't eat oranges, and especially mangoes! It's a very good video as usual. Thank you, Dr. Berry and God bless 🙏 🌹
