I think this is truly your best video. All the fashion advice in the world is meaningless if we don’t learn how to tame our inner critic. As someone who has been thin their whole life and now find themselves with a menopause belly and a body that feels entirely foreign- this video has reminded me of the beauty that comes with embracing the “wear and tear” and not giving a F.

“Unhappiness is purely the result of comparison.” -Kierkegaard At 70, I’ve learned to employ the Gallic Shrug…then go on my merry way. Key to contentment in life. Well said, Emily.

I love that! And definitely keeping the shrug in mind 😃

👋🥰 Hello again my inner pixie twin, it’s pixie grandma here. 😂 At age (almost) 64, I’ve learned a few things. 1. Growing up without social media or cell phones vs today’s technology has shown me that personal interaction will never be replaced in my life. I love social media, but not in big doses and I’m picky about it. So be picky and stare at screens less - go take a walk, start a project, read a book made out of paper. 2. Tell yourself every morning ‘who let the elves destroy my hair!’, laugh, wash your face and throw on clothes that make you happy. It’s why the elves mess up your hair when you sleep - so you do things for yourself in the morning. 3. Love yourself. You are you and you are special and unique. There is no other you. Rejoice in yourself. Stand tall in your mind and give yourself grace. ❤ As an artist I find inner peace through acceptance of myself as I am - at any age I may be.

I have a habit of 5 hours of reading non-fiction and fiction a day before I can look at social media! It builds my vocabulary, builds my career knowledge, and boosts my capacity as a learner in all aspects of life. Don't ask me what is on my nightstand because there are 20 non-fiction and 20 fiction books at the moment :) I also make sure I'm reading from BIPOC and Queer writers :)

So much great advice! #6 (romanticize your body) is the hardest one for me. I'm 54 and post-menopause, and let me tell you, menopause does some really FUN (she said, dripping with sarcasm) things to your body. I've lost quite a bit of weight over the past year and a half, I eat healthy, and do pretty heavy duty workouts at the gym 3x a week. So I'm in pretty great shape for my age, but there are just areas of my body -- my lower stomach and my batwings -- that are never going to be really toned again unless I were to get lipo. Most of the time, I feel pretty fierce, but accepting the state of those areas is a constant struggle. I think what makes it hard is that even though I'm 54, inside I FEEL 35, so sometimes it feels like my face and my body are betraying me. 😁 But I continue to fight on. 💪😊
@EmilyWheatley19 сағат бұрын
Ahhh that is such a conflict for sure! You sound bad ass so just remember that even if it’s hard to romanticize your body.

Perfectly timed video, Emily! We’ve all over indulged at Christmas time. And that’s ok! Thanks for the reminder to not be too critical when looking in the mirror at ourselves. Some people aren’t as lucky to make it to the age we are currently. You remind me every day to embrace being alive. Thanks for showing up every week. 😊

Emily, you have such wisdom for a young mother. There's a poem titled "Warning" by Jenny Joseph written in the the 60's. It made the rounds again in the 80's/90's when The Red Hat Society's became popular. It's opening line, "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple". It speaks to a lot of what you're saying here. I can't agree more, but it took me until my 60's to really feel it in my bones and become courageous enough to be that authentic. It's beautiful, liberating, fun! You're a wise one!

Gosh, you struck so many chords there! I've thought of all those things during my life. A while back, I went off social media. Too tiring to deal with! I have reached that certain age when women become invisible. It is so liberating! I wake up and look at my short, cowlicky hair and then put in some product. If people think it looks sub par, too bad. Two things that were told to me on a regular basis as I was growing up were, "perfect is the enemy of good." As you say, one only needs to be good enough. If you are a perfectionist like I am, that has to beome a mantra.The other is, "It is always better to underdress than overdress." When I go to a big event, I think, "Will people remember what I wore 2 weeks from now?" Bingo. Emily, you are wise beyond your years.

Preach sister. For myself it’s the little girl inside me that was made fun of for my clothes. We were poor and I didn’t have many clothes. Even though I can’t buy whatever I want it still makes me insecure to put an outfit together. I am close to 70 and am trying to love that little girl but let her go.

I really do think this is your branding. ❤ thank you for making us feel that permission to just be ourselves. I live in a city with a very casual environment. But I saw this well-dressed woman in our neighborhood one day and I felt inspired to slightly overdress since then. If we dress well, I believe we kind of allow others (even just a few) to do the same. 😊

Thank you. I started following fashion trends because I needed to build a professional wardrobe after years of wearing scrubs almost every day. (OMG Scrubs were so much easier!) The more I learn about fashion and how rapid trends can come and go, the more I realize I really do not give an F. I could hold my head high and walk with the confidence of a Rockstar in scrubs covered in the most disgusting things and yet deciding which width pant leg I should buy for the office intimidated me. My choice? The pants that fit my body and make me feel like a freakin' rockstar.
