Sure, the hitchhiker story was scary, but it's kind of a nice change of paste to see an obviously non-trustworthy person in a scary story being polite in a non-creepy way and showing enough compassion to apologize. Gives out the idea that perhaps that guy wasn't entirely evil, but perhaps simply struggling in some way
