In Hindu mythology, there are seven immortals known as the Chiranjivi (Sanskrit: चिरंजीवी), who are believed to have been granted immortality by divine grace. These seven figures appear across various Hindu scriptures and are said to have a continuous presence on Earth. Here are key points about each of them:
1. *Ashwatthama*
Son of Dronacharya, a revered teacher and warrior in the *Mahabharata*.
Known for his unwavering devotion to his father and mastery in warfare.
Granted immortality as a result of Lord Krishna’s curse for his misdeeds in the Kurukshetra war, particularly for releasing the Brahmastra weapon against the Pandavas and killing Draupadi’s sons.
2. *Mahabali*
The benevolent Asura king of Kerala, known for his immense devotion and generosity.
Granted immortality and a promise from Lord Vishnu to visit his people once a year (celebrated as the festival of Onam in Kerala).
He was sent to the underworld (Patalaloka) after the Vamana avatar of Vishnu requested three paces of land and then grew to cosmic size, covering heaven and earth with two steps.
3. *Vyasa*
The sage who compiled the Vedas and authored the epic *Mahabharata*.
Known as "Veda Vyasa" for organizing and classifying the Vedas, and also credited with composing the *Puranas*.
Immortalized to preserve knowledge and guide humanity through wisdom and spiritual teachings.
4. *Hanuman*
Devotee of Lord Rama and the son of the wind god, Vayu.
Known for his immense strength, loyalty, and humility, often regarded as a symbol of devotion.
Blessed with immortality by multiple gods for his selfless service to Rama; it’s believed that he continues to reside on Earth, wherever Rama’s name is chanted.
5. *Vibhishana*
Brother of the demon king Ravana in the *Ramayana*; known for his righteousness.
He chose to side with Lord Rama against his own brother for the cause of dharma (righteousness).
Granted immortality by Rama and made the king of Lanka; represents the triumph of virtue over evil, even within challenging circumstances.
6. *Kripacharya*
Royal teacher and mentor in the Kuru dynasty, known for his mastery of archery and loyalty to the throne.
Played a role in both the Mahabharata war and served as a mentor to the Pandavas and Kauravas.
Granted immortality so he could continue his duty to uphold dharma and guide future generations.
7. *Parashurama*
The sixth avatar of Vishnu and a sage with immense power, known for his lifelong commitment to vanquishing corrupt warriors.
Known for wielding an axe and for his campaigns to rid the Earth of corrupt rulers, as well as his act of donating land to Brahmins.
Although an avatar of Vishnu, he was granted immortality and is believed to still reside in meditation, preparing to reappear as a mentor to Kalki, the future avatar of Vishnu.
The Chiranjivi symbolize different qualities, including loyalty, devotion, righteousness, and knowledge. They serve as reminders of various spiritual ideals and principles central to Hindu teachings.
