I’ve watched plenty of knitting channels and tbh I am flabbergasted at how many sweaters people make for themselves. I love a good warm sweater. But I don’t need so many. After knitting a few practical items for myself it is my goal to make gifts for fam & friends to introduce them to wool and hopefully get a few to join me in knitting. I also would love to make items for the needy/homeless shelter. I grew up always cold no matter how many layers I put on in the winter. Which is why my heart goes out to those in need.

I think it is very interesting that we have the same idea of "Knitting is a hobby to relax and calm down" with a very different result. I have a lot of WIPs (more than 15 usually) and I don't feel stressed about it at all. What does stress me out is having to work on a project (because of a deadline or because it is the only one I have with me) that I am not enjoying at the moment but wanting to knit something. I know the joy will come back but sometimes I just don't feel the project at a certain time. Thats why I love having so many projects because I can do whatever I feel like and I know I will finish all projects eventually.

I agree with you on all fronts. As for the Sophie scarf, I can't understand the hype. To me, it looks like a knitted rag tied around the neck. Give me a scarf any day, but it needs to be one with some substance. I think many people knit the Sophie scarf to use up a spare skein. I prefer to make blanket squares with spare yarn and donate to charities that need them, such as those in Ukraine and those that work with Eastern European orphanages.

Hi Lise! This is the first video I watch from you and I really enjoyed it. I agree 100% with each and every point you made, it's really refreshing to see a Knitter in KZbin that sees knitting as a hobby and not as a job which is something that, saddly, has been becoming more common in the knitting community. In the end I may not like it, but what I’ve learned always elevates my skill level & my confidence. Knitting for me is a relaxing, purposeful & stimulating hobby. I’m into houseplants like you describe your knitting pleasure, but I know ppl. who must add every variety of houseplants sold. I consider that work for me, but for them it’s a pleasant feeling. Hi Lise! I can very much relate to your issues with these 7 knitting trends. I started knitting colorwork in 2020 and love the fun of it! I soon realized I don't wear my small amount of colorwork cardigans or pullovers,. I knit colorwork mittens & neck cowls for myself. I knit colorwork sweaters for my children & grandchildren. They are almost like heirloom items, as I knit very few. I suggest a cowl or mittens to start colorwork. They are small and not a big commitment of time and money! I agree with so much of your reasons why you don't jump on the trends. I knit what is my (go-to) style ( which is more the classics). Time is precious, and money isn't falling from a tree. I think about what I want to knit, all knitting purchases and also the shelving. I have limited for storage of my wool/yarns and will not go beyond that space.Thanks for sharing! Take care, Karen.

The Sophie scarf is perfect because it’s a easy project to do most places you travel (vehicle and waiting worthy) also it can fit in a purse easily and that is nice for carrying around if you get a small chill, not a cold cold winter day. I agree with your views on the knitting trends. It tires me out watching some YT videos and people have so many colour work sweaters on the go and I honestly don't know how often they wear them and how they find the time to knit them. I was intimidated by colour work and found mittens the easiest to get over my fear. Saltwater Knits have wonderful books with easy instructions. I also did a few Arne and Carlos dickies for my grand kids which were easy to start and finish and not a full sweater. Another easy way to do colour work is already pre-dyed yarn that becomes a pattern as you knit...very satisfying...I've knitted many socks with that type of yarn. At the moment I'm in a slump with my knitting...not really motivated and haven't seen anything to excite me...hopefully, it's just a phase.

I must say that multicolour/colourwork sweaters are some of my favourites that I have made and are also my most worn knits. I think this is a very personal preference. I am very energized by colour, and using multiple colours brings me a lot of joy. I think that a lot of these "trends" are popularized by "Influencers" on social media and here on KZbin. But it is very practical for me where I live, because it doesn't get too cold here. I don't follow trends when I start to knit something. The yarn and the pattern need to "speak" to me. No matter colorwork or one color item. I grew up with traditional norwegian knitting with alot of colors. I have a big family to knit for, so I have a certain amount of yarn in my stash. I recommed you to start with a pair of norwegians mittens to get into colorwork.

In my experience, colorwork knitting can be addictive. 🙂 Maybe a hat or cowl as a starting point? Colorwork in small circumference knitting (socks or mittens) can be a challenge when you’re first learning to carry floats, because if the floats are too tight or too loose, it affects the sizing. I’m one of those knitters who likes having a variety of WIPs, because they engage my interest in different ways and suit my various moods… but I agree, if the number is too high, it can become anxiety-inducing. Also agree with you about overbuying (sale) yarn-I do that too.

But for knitting, I like doing something interesting, so the construction better be fun! ❤ I also forget why I bought yarn. It’s okay to change your mind about what project to choose, but I hate forgetting because I do get very excited about it. I sometimes use the “Ravelry Queue” feature and link the yarn, that helps a lot!

Lisa I thoroughly enjoy you, AND I AGREE with all of your points. My mantra is that no matter how good a sale seems to be, yarn that goes unused is absolutely not a deal. Keep posting and we don’t ever “need” to buy yarn…unless there is an existing project, or you are casting a new one on. I too prefer tonal color work. I especially like it when it just looks like texture, but when you are close it is actually color work. I was going to suggest that you start with the color work mittens because they would be “handy” for cycling to work. (I love those in more contrasting colors though😁)❤

Hello from Toronto. I agree with virtually all of your ideas. I have not jumped on the advent wagon. Why would I want to be stuck with a ton of very expensive mini skeins site unseen? The exception is that I ordered a Valentine advent for a shawl. This was a much smaller investment of yarns (about 6 minis) all in the pink range that I could see in advance and fit into a planned shawl project. When I watch KZbin videos of people opening yarn advents, what strikes me is that I dislike at least 50% of the colours and keep thinking what an incredible waste of money this is.

On the first point, I only vaguely "plan" what things I want to do next. It's not some strict list or order. For me, it's more like brainstorming of patterns or ideas I have. On the second point about holiday themed items, it might be a very American thing (ex Ugly Sweater). We're big on holiday themed things. It's just for novelty and special occasions. On the fifth point, I did colorwork for the first time on my last sweater. It was actually quite enjoyable. It made me want to look into more traditional colorwork patterns like lopapeysas. I also think the elaborate colorwork is also just impressive to look at. On the sixth point, I don't get how people have so many WIPs. I care more about the completion than the act of knitting per se. I also struggle jumping back into the project keeping in mind changes I've made or remembering what's going on in the pattern. Totally agree on the last point. It seems like a weird shopping addiction. I only ever buy yarn when I'm going to start a new project and know exactly what I'm using it for. Overall, I agree with your points. I wonder if it's a generational thing. I'm in my early 30s but started knitting in my teens before social media and these online communities. From watching many youtubers/creators, many started in the last few years. I learned how to knit from books and other people. I didn't have trends or content creators or anything like that. I also got patterns from buying books or the library. So I never really saw anyone else's yarn stashes or patterns that were trending, etc.

Love your sensible approach to current trends. Completely agree with what you are saying. May I make a suggestion re - trying colourwork? I have been a knitting teacher for many years, and when my students express a desire to move into colourwork I have found that mosaic knitting is a great jumping off point. Only one colour is used per row, and the colourwork effect is created by slipping stitches. It has a huge impact for very little effort … 😊 There are some very user-friendly patterns on Ravelry. I recommend a two-handed approach for all other forms of stranded knitting - that is holding the yarns in the right and left hands at the same time, and using the colours alternately. It is relatively easy to learn and makes trapping floats a breeze. It also enables you to knit complicated patterns quite quickly. Thank you so much for sharing … Hugs from Down Under … 🥰

In December I started all these stash busting projects such hats, scarfs and a scrappy blanket. I felt very unmotivated and lost my knitting mojo because I felt like knitting was a chore as opposed to a pleasurable hobby. I was never happy with the finished object because I didn't want it to begin with. Don't know what to do with all these random skeins but from now on I start with a pattern in mind first and then buy yarn for it which is my usual thing to do. I'm doing that now and feel so much happier about knitting. I don't have the budget to buy yarn with no project so don't collect a lot of sweater quantities of yarn with no purpose.

I just discovered your podcast and have subscribed. My knitting philosophy is very similar to yours. Just some thoughts: 1. Some years ago, I made a hat that had a small band of colorwork. It was easy and fun. Generally, the float business in a large project is more than I want to deal with. I do love the look of colorwork sweaters, though. 2. Given the comments, I must be the only person who loves the Sophie Scarf. I am currently making it using a skein of subtly variegated silk yarn that was given to me as a gift and combining it with a very fine mohair yarn in a similar color that has been in my stash forever. After a few inches, I am finding it very relaxing and enjoyable. The included icord edging is great. I have never done this before and now I think I will add it to some projects in the future. As for usefulness, I have a long, very narrow scarf that I wrap around my neck a couple of times and then tie loosely below my chin. It is a great accessory. This will serve as a similar purpose. Looking forward to seeing you in future videos! Thank you!

Too many WIPs worry me, but I always have socks on the needles, and I want to knit more jumpers this year. I have so many beautiful patterns, but we keep seeing the new shiny ones, don’t we!? I’m determined not to buy any new yarn or patterns this year. I have a good stock of sock yarn, but that makes me happy. I follow Helle of Danish Musings (she knits the most beautiful garments and is just such an interesting person to listen to). I wonder if you have seen the patterns by The Petite Knitter (not Petite Knits) she lives in Alaska and knits really lovely colour work yoked sweaters in neutral colours, using only two shades I believe. Once you have knitted the yoke, the rest of the sweater is plain sailing. Something I would like to try this year to use up some of my Plotulopi. I don’t understand the hype of the Sophie scarf or the ranunculus (I have made several ranunculus but have given them away). Agree with not planning for the year, as every week there are new things on Ravelry. Holiday sweater, yuck! Too many WIPs, for me, means nothing gets finished. Like you, I have 2 main projects that I rotate every 2 days or so and a third project, usually a hat for charity, that I take to my knitting group. This year, I am noting down the amount of yarn I buy (in grams) and the amount of yarn I use (in grams) to see if I can use more than I buy. I am also buying yarn with specific projects in mind, rather than buying random skeins with no specific projects in mind. I have tried going on a yarn diet in the past but it has never lasted more than a few months. Great video, a refreshing change.

Then i found, its expensive and I'm a control freak!😅 i want to know what I'm getting! This year i bought and advent stripe sock...low risk but fun. But i thought the colors were dreadful. As to stash, i recieved some money out of the blue. I wanted to commemorate it with yarn, sooo i spent it all on yarn! soo much fun buying from places i have never purchased from! What i did was i bought all the gift yarn for the year for my children(5) and grands(8) so now, i have yarn for the year for things i would make anyway! Very excited to knit it all! I love colorwork and do it when my brain allows! Not a fan of the Sophie scarf either, I'm with you on that! Have never seen your podcast before, and i really enjoyed it!!❤

I’m with you on the Sophie scarf; I don’t get the appeal and the knitting looks fussy to me (tracking short rows?). I do catch up with trends very late, though, so maybe in a couple of years I’ll come around to it!

I may agree with you but it doesn’t quite happen.🤔I had some rowan yarn in my stash for 25 years until I found the ideal pattern for it. It is getting a lot of wear. Colourwork, start with a hat or headband, Birllin Yarns have a good headband pattern to star with. I finished a Swaledale scarf which I made into a cowl (highly patterned) in October if I am outside it is round my neck, the Sophie Scarf wouldn’t keep my neck warm. And I am with you on the Advent calendars. My friend and I did our version of this which was the Twelve Days of Christmas, with little things to help with knitting, which we both loved. I plan to do my husband a Christmas knit one year as I can’t stand the one he bought from a supermarket, this goes against the fact I have said I won’t knit him a sweater ever again as he pulls them out of shape putting them on. My plan is to reduce the stash this year and I have already started on the Christmas presents for next Christmas. I have never knitted socks but have found two Halloween patterns I like, one with bats and one with ghosts by Swedish designers. I am/was a Halloween baby. Loved your vlog. x

Have just found your channel and thank you for this episode.I found your perspectives very practical and well thought through -I resonate with pretty much all of it😁! As to your current opinion on colour work sweaters you may want to try a few rounds on a yoke or cuff for an interesting but subtle detail,especially if you are keen to explore the technique(this might also be more in keeping with your aesthetic…?)Thanks again .Look forward to going back to watch your earlier episodes

Danish Canadian here! I grew up with my Mormor and Morfar. My Mormor made multi colourwork sweaters ALL the time. I grew up wearing them. The best pattern for you to start colourwork is Jessica McDonald's Blizzard pattern. It is a one colour colourwork. I only ever have 2 projects on the go. A sweater and socks.

I live in the Southern Hemisphere, so Christmas Jumpers are not a thing here, nor can I imagine making and wearing one. I don’t buy yarn without a plan, however, I have too many plans, so I’m not planning to buy anymore for a while. As a result, I have my knitting plans sorted for the year. 😅 I typically have 1-3 WIPS, as I always have something easy for “Pub Knitting” (more talking and laughing than knitting), as well as a charity project. As for the Sophie Scarf, I haven’t made it but in my climate it would be ideal as large, bulky scarves are way too hot 🥵 and I couldn’t imagine wearing them. As for colour work, a year ago, I swore I would stay away as I don’t do patterned garments at all. However, I ended up knitting two 2-colour jumpers and have the yarn for two more this year. It’s a slippery slope. 😏

I'm in Copenhagen too and I don't see a lot of people wearing Sofie scarves. Maybe people think all the knitters in Denmark are running around dressed head to toe in Petite Knit. I finished a Sofie scarf not too long ago and found it to be a boring knit. It took me a long time to get it done because I prioritized other projects. Now I'm not excited to wear it.

I can’t agree with your idea about colour work. I’m the opposite. Why would I knit something like for example the vest you’re wearing when I can buy similar things in shops? My knitting IS a statement , it allows me a personal style. I’m not at all inspired by all the so-called classic designs of Petite Knit, My favourite things Knitwear and the like that are currently trending. I want my knitting to stand out not to blend in. And I’m a polyamorous knitter, I knit on several projects to have variety, switch with my mood or the occasion that asks for more or less need to concentrate.

The really nice thing about knitting is you can show off your personal style. My personal style is neutral colors and subdued patterns. If you like a brighter palette and like to stand out, that’s great! I like colorwork because you have so much freedom to make it be what you like and what you want to say.

You showed up as a recommendation here. Watched halfway through because I want more knitting content to watch. Sad, really. Because you may have wonderful videos but while I agree with practical knitting, this just felt very negative. The Sophie shawl is the scarf version on steroids. Maybe you’re unaware of it. The knitting for olive sweater is absolutely stunning and can and would be worn most of the winter, due to its subtle nod to the season not the holiday. I typically enjoy these videos because while a specific pattern is mentioned, a more preferred or appropriate suggestion balances out the negatives.
@liselightDK19 сағат бұрын
@@sharbear1968 it’s definitiv not meant negatively - it’s just my perspective. I love the design of the Knitting for Olive sweater but I would think Christmas every time I wore it, so I know it wouldn’t suit my life style. But I love that we all have our different preferences
@michelegirard18 сағат бұрын
I agree about the advent calendars, to me they are a waste of money. The Sophie scarf is useless in my opinion. I agree with you on a lot of things but that Knitting for Olive sweater is gorgeous and can be worn all winter. The trend that bothers me the most is that it seems like all the new sweater patterns are knitted top down and the sleeves stitches are picked up and knitted in the round. All of that to avoid having to stitch seams. Knitting these sleeves with the weight and bulk of a whole sweater is not enjoyable to me and hurts my body . I'd rather knit them separately and graph them on. I have a hard time finding patterns where the sweater in knitted in pieces, which is a lot more enjoyable and easier on my body. Thanks for your video.
@liselightDK17 сағат бұрын
@@michelegirard I agree that a top down sweater can get really heavy when you get to the sleeves. I like the top down construction but I don’t mind sewing either. Maybe because I do sew garments also
@ellennordal58593 сағат бұрын
The main reason I prefer top down sweaters is that I can much more easily adjust yoke depth and sleeve and body length. My row gauge has always been way off when stitch gauge is correct, which is probably why I have these difficulties with bottom-up designs. Seaming does add additional structure which can be especially helpful with drapey knits. I have a good friend who only knits in pieces and her sweaters fit perfectly about the shoulders, hang straight and keep their shape.

I enjoy making an epic color work project occasionally, and the colors don’t have to be bright! But, mostly, I knit classic styles. I have made several projects from Petite Knit, and I love them, but I always tweak them to suit myself. I have a background in sewing, so I understand how garments fit, so I frequently design my own sweaters. One current trend I will not be trying is boucle yarn! I hate working with it! And, I agree with you, two or three projects going at a time is just right!
