There's a place for SOME live service games, provided they offer a good experience at the outset and keep putting out decent content. The problem is that ALL these different game companies are trying to put out their own live service slop in an oversaturated market, often working in genres they're unfamiliar with and producing garbage as a result.

Yup, the JPN server lasted a little under a year, and EN is closing next month. If that entry is about SIF2. Another game that's ending soon is Takt Op Symphony. The devs were very generous sending 2 in game mails that had 200 pulls and material boxes in them. Also, one fully broken "piece" and 2 maxed out ability/Stat increase equip cards. This game only lasted 8 months.

The Day Before was such a debacle that Steam stepped in to give everybody their money back. Considering what Steam usually lets companies get away with, with nobody getting refunds with play time over 2 hours, this was an extreme situation. The shady developers said they were going to take the money everyone spent on the game to pay off debts, even though they were not going to be continuing on with it. Only they foolishly said this before Steam had given them their profits, which Steam never ended up giving them, then they tried to take credit for Steam refunding people.

I watched a KZbin clip of the ending at the time because I was curious about the bonkers plot, but had no will to play this awful game. Basically, the ending is: You reach the top of the tower and you fight God. God turns out to be a giant glowing naked woman, who's also the sun (?). God wants to make humans evolve into angels (?) So then you fight and kill God - but then God (the sun?) explodes and you're going to die, but then the actress Kate Beckinsdale flies in on angel wings to save you and then she turns into the (new?) sun. And everyone all lived happily ever after. Thanks to Kate Beckinsdale. (Seriously, the character looks exactly like Kate Beckinsdale, circa Underworld)

These games have got to be absolutely depressing to work on. Every boots-on-the-ground developer actively making them knows that they're going to tank. That they're being asked to make a nakedly predatory product at the whim of their publisher that thinks somehow they're going to be the company that gets aboard the already moving train of live service titles and not just plant face first and join the dozens of others littering the tracks. Knowing the brutal reality of the workload forced upon these developers in service of a product destined to fail makes it all the worse. This is a real dark time for this industry.

There is never a good instance of working on a sinking ship. Whether it's buiilding a trash live service game, doing accounting for a company where you're responsible for preparing the financial statements and you can see with your own eyes that you're going to be out of a job in oh, about two more quarters, either because the company is going under or you're about to be bought out by a hedge fund and dismantled, or if you're a crewman on an actual ship that is currently taking on water faster than a dry sponge thrown into a pond, it is absolutely soul-crushing.

And if that wasn't enough, there's also a possibility you'll join millions in getting layed off a few months later by your company (Announced with a big PR style post somewhere talking about the "Hard Decisions" they had to make, years after the amount of stupid decisions they made leading up to this). Fun....

If you told me at the beginning of 2024 that I'd hear you guys talk about Love Live, I would have laughed, and yet here we are. An interesting point to note is that the original Love Live School Idol Festival ran for almost 10 whole years before being shut down! That's hella amazing for a live service game. As always the devs decided to make some stupid decisions (AKA chasing the trend of only adding the highest rarity tier to the gacha instead of the previous method of adding all rarities to the gacha) although I was under the impression that the original LLSIF still made good money when they decided to shut it down. No one knows truly why they decided to shut down the original, if it really was still making good money. Also it was stated that EU players wouldn't be able to transfer their original LLSIF progress to LLSIF2 which was a huge deal in the Love Live community, as well as (from what I've heard) LLSIF2 players saying it's inferior in almost every way to the original LLSIF (especially when you consider that LLSIF came out over 10 years ago whereas LLSIF2 came out last year).

The sad thing is, despite being hilariously unfinished (something that wasn't mentioned in the video is that large parts of the map *weren't even textured, they were nothing but cubemaps* not to mention how easy it was to clip through the ground) and an obvious attempt to chase a trend, Radical Heights was somehow the most fun I've ever had with the Battle Royale genre. I only played it for a couple of hours but the lack of fall damage and the ability to dive in a different direction mid-air made for some surprisingly fun skirmishes (one of my favourite memories was the time I got into a firefight in an apartment building, jumped off a balcony and dove back into the building from the floor below, then ambushed the guy when he started shooting someone else) If Boss Key hadn't needed to rush it out the door to try to stay afloat after Lawbreakers bombed so badly and had a few more months to get it in something vaguely resembling a Beta instead of a barely-started Alpha before going into Early Access, it might have actually turned into something decent. Sadly, we'll never know.

further info regarding SIF2, for those who didn't know, they had another game called SIFAS as well as SIF (predecessor to SIF2), they pulled the plug on those games to focus everything on making this game, the problem is, when SIF2 was released to JP, it was clear that the game is dying so when it was released to global, the players aren't really that surprised (aside from those who aren't up to date by the game's development) by the announcement. There are even rumors that SIF2 is the last LL mobile game for global players tldr, they basically f'ed it up with how they handled the development of SIF2

As for the Love Live game, I remember us talking about that in a gacha discord server I'm in, and we all had a good laugh at it. I suppose since they'd already put in work to translate it and promised it to the global audience, they felt the need to release it at least briefly so fans who were looking forward to it could play, but it's such a weird move, lol.

@@ZackC What? That people should have some guarantee that the thing they spent money on will actually still function for some amount of time? True, because some of them may just end up being a rugpull or scam (kinda like NFTs and and crapcoins) I'd like to add on top of the warranty period it should also come with some level of quality that they have to pass/meet, otherwise they could just be asset flips or shoddy/lazy games that stayed for however many years before shutting down... but the cash shop is always 100% functional and responsive for obvious reasons

By the time the first issue got to my house, the game's closure was announced. There was no code to be had. I cancelled the subscription the next day. One of the biggest things I'm still curious about. There *is* a revival project called Darkflame Universe that has released some source code and seems to be talking as if people are playing the game again, but I have no idea how to access it if they are. Hoping one day they'll announce an official game client and servers and the like, so I'll finally be able to see what's behind that door.

As a space where people roleplay anime characters, clearly many of them are fans of series like Love Live and were pretty thrilled to see the Global release, and then immediately heartbroken in the next blink because of it being both announced to be launching and then closing IN THE SAME TWEET. I know the answer is "so they can try to get money from that short time frame they have", but truly what is the point of keeping it open for that short a time frame otherwise?

I think I mentioned MvCI in the last video, but how about New Gundam Breaker. Unlike the Gundam Breaker games that came before it, it had less model kits to mix and match with, and incorporated a hot swap system that "encouraged" switching out your current parts with what you could find on the ground. And those were the issues that we knew about before the game came out. Gameplay issues aside for this particular issue, it did encourage online play as certain model kits could only be acquired there, and there was always the chance that more could be added as DLC. Unfortunately, the game failed every network beta test in Japan, played at a terrible framerate online and offline, and was reviewed so poorly that the price dropped to $20 in Japan weeks before its international release. Thankfully, we're getting a Gundam Breaker 4 some time this year, and we can all forget this game ever happened.

I wonder if any live service games that have come out since the apocalypse of the genre this time last year are only coming out because the publishers just want to squeeze whatever revenue they possibly can out of them so they're not a total loss. A certain DC universe game that will have its servers shut down by Q3 (someone set a reminder to bring this up in September the way Ellen set a reminder for Luke's Steam Deck) comes to mind.
