Mass Effect 3's multiplayer is my go-to pick for tacked-on multiplayer modes that turned out surprisingly awesome. The mode was your basic horde-mode shooter affair with objectives between waves of foes then an extract, but the mode got a ton of support post-launch. Loads of new characters, including fan favorites like Krogan and Volus, new weapons, entire new enemy factions, and maps. Especially fun on PC where you could break up the omni-key (one button was for sprint, cover and pick up and on PC you could reassign those using an edit), I'll forever remember my favorite, the N7 Paladin, the one man explosion machine.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on the DS had an excellent asymmetric multilayer, where one side was Link scurrying about through a Pacman style maze retrieving mcguffins and taking shelter in the safe zones his enemies couldn't enter. The other player controlled several invincible guard golems, and sent them about the map by drawing paths for them to patrol. They couldn't cross the safe zones, and Link wasn't shown on that player's map until Link picked up a mcguffin, leading to a dash for Link back to safety as the other player vectored their guards in to intercept. It could be played on yours and another nearby DS while only requiring one copy of the game.

Two games come to mind for multiplayer twists: Command & Conquer: Renegade (Which still has a fan base with Renegade X.) Your typical first/third person shooter got a whole lot more interesting as each base let you buy unit upgrades/vehicles. These units how ever were dependent on having the buildings to make them and having your ire harvester alive to being in currency. The other was Geist. It had 3 modes, a death match where you could possess different characters to fight and switch when they were on low health along with super units to find on the map. A “king of the hill” mode where you tried to possess the target the longest. And a ghost hunter vs ghost mode. All none that needed to be added to the game, but added another scoop of fun to it.

OK, so I have a game mode that while is not ambitious, it was so fun that it made me and my friends laugh and play for hours... It was XIII's The Hunt mode. To explain quickly, you and other people were put into a multiplayer map where you were given a hunting gun and nothing more, you could shoot each other with it, but the main focus was you had to hunt down this high-pitched singing Ghost that darted around the map and would kill you instantly if you got touched by it... The more you shot at it, the smaller it would become, but the more faster it got. Me and my mates would play this for HOURS on PS2. We laughed every time we ran past a hallway and heard it's helium sounding voice, or when it would appear out of nowhere and instant kill one of us... God I had such a great time with it. Also a special mention, IMO has to go to Condemned: Criminal Origin's Cops vs Criminals mode, so scary in those pitch black maps being chased down by melee welding crazy people.

Oh, wow! This is such a coincidence. A couple weeks ago I was trying to remember what Future Cop LAPD was named and couldn’t figure it out. I ended up deciding it wasn’t real and I imagined the whole thing. It’s so weird to go literally decades without thinking about it and then have it show up twice back to back

A few months back I was trying so hard to remember the name of the game. I finally saw a KZbinr make a video on it and all the memories came rushing back. Fun Fact : It was the first game by EA Redwood Shores who would later rebrand as Visceral and make Dead Space.

Outside X Lore pitch: Since they have mentioned the black chair they sit on is Robert, and he wants revenge on whoever burnt down his furniture factory home, I stipulate that Jane did it in response to the murder of her first husband, who was in fact murdered by red chair who she mistook for Robert.

Precinct Assault was a decent enough mode in single player too (lucky, friendless me), especially when you unlocked the weird map. I say it's the weird map; really it's just one of the other ones but with insects - and weirdness.

Assassins creed multiplayer was amazing when first came out. So many people would be crying in the lobby because they got 15 kills in one game and only got 1000ish points, but someone with 3 kills got like 5K. They didn't realize if you run around like mad speed killing everyone you got barely anything. Taking your time and setting up a kill was amazingly fun and rewarding when you dominated a match with barely any kills because you did it with style. My favorite was poisoning someone when you walk past and them just about to kill their target and dropping dead.. you see the guy that almost got tapped freeze like, "Wtf happened" then you'd get them as a target hopefully and half the job of finding them was done.

I always resent these admittedly really cool and creative multiplayer modes because the game would force you to play them for trophies, and now quite a few Platinum trophies are lost to time because the servers went down

Singularity should be on this list. On top of having a real cool story and time manipulation gameplay, the multiplayer was unique in that it was monsters vs humans where each monster had its own unique abilities and controls.

The Assassins Creed one was what I immediately thought of when I read the title. As someone who doesnt normally play multiplayer games, I loved that mode. There have been quite a few games that have tried to replicate it in various ways, but none have succeeded in exactly how fun that was to both evade pursuers with chase breakers and abilities, or to hunt down your targets from the rooftops. Its maddening that of all the things, that is what Ubi decided to drop and never return to. I also admit I didnt like the concept of Origins multiplayer at first, but after a while I eventually gave it a shot and liked it, but it felt like you were playing as paper. It was just way too easy to shoot down your targets.

Probably the wrong list to mention this, but anyone remember Small Soldiers? A game based on the really, really bizarre Toy Story meets Gremlins kind of movie. Honestly the movie was so dark for a kids film and extremely far fetched (Military grade micro-processors being installed in childrens toys 😅 - really??) but the game held up surprisingly well. It was a pretty throw away single player experience but multiplayer was where it shined greatly. Lots of modifications/types of projectiles you fire, summonable buddies to assist you with hunting down your opponent and then of course mountable turrets that...to be honest if you just mount and camp at the turrets you've pretty much won the multiplayer experience lol 😁but you're probably down by 1 friend as well.
@Gatorade6911 ай бұрын
I remember liking the demo for it and seeing posters for the movie, never saw the movie or played the full game though. Funny how you say it's like Toy Story meets Gremlins as it was directed by Joe Dante that directed Gremlins.

@@Gatorade69 Oh I had no idea hahaha, well I guess I was spot on then 😄. Thanks for that. Movie is crazy, really don't think it would hold up in todays world but if you want to see something weird and twisted then I guess go for it. Wouldn't recommend though.

This is why I don’t understand why Naughty Dog didn’t just release their TLOU Factions 2 game as a standard multiplayer game. We all use to love and play multiplayer games, before the idea of live service ever existed. Why couldn’t they just sell what they made, without constantly pushing updates? I knew plenty of people who were into the idea of another Factions game. Why do they all need to be live service these days?
@Gatorade6911 ай бұрын
Agreed. Any and all work is also now wasted. I really liked Factions and was hoping Factions also came to the second game.

The best part about the old Assassin's Creed games' multiplayer was the fact they had some story to them. In Revelations you climb the ranks of the Templar Order and in IIII you're an spy for the Assassins' Order within Abstergo. Sad to see the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer wasn't mentioned though, while its progression system was very bad due to its focus on P2W lootbox progression the actual mechanics of multiplayer were great. The combat was good, the maps were fun and there was a great selection of characters to play as from aliens like the Volus to Alliance soldiers. I played a lot of it back in the day and I wish they had ported the multiplayer into Mass Effect:Legendary Edition, albeit with a new progression system.

Conker's Bad Fur Day's multiplayer modes were five full-on parallel campaigns taking place at various points in the main plot starring their own casts of characters and focusing on a different form of gameplay.

I would say the survival mode from Modern Warfare 3, and it's DLC spinoff "chaos mode", were a more noteworthy addition to CoD multiplayer. It's basically the same concept as zombies, but with human enemies that shoot back. You can't just skirt them around in a big circle for ages while the other 3 players work on unlocking an overpowered magic bow. They have guns, and are fond of using them. If the maps had stories, Easter eggs, and progression like zombies did, then it would've been the much more popular mode.
@lordfrostwind315111 ай бұрын
I felt the same way about Extinction in Ghosts, honestly I liked that way better than any of the zombies modes.
