Cool power set. Nice toot salute on the second train with the EOT DPU. Neat little dielectric oil bottle. The oil was used to prevent battery terminals from corroding. Might have been from when the line had track signals powered by glass jar batteries. Awesome action beginning to end, enjoyed it much. Thanks Scott!
@1960gambitАй бұрын
Tanks P! I did some research on the oil, and they actually dumped it in the glass battery, and it floated on top of the electrolyte to seal it off and keep the off gassing of the water down when they were charging so the that the battery wouldn`t dry out. I was really surprised when I read that because I was thinking like you that it went on the terminals.
@poowg2657Ай бұрын
@@1960gambit The funny thing about that is it might prevent electrolyte evaporation to an extent but it won't prevent outgassing when charging. The navy tried something like that for the batteries on our submarines in the 30s and the oil contributed to battery fires. I remember when I was a kid watching signal maintainers oiling up the terminals on the glass jar batteries and figured that's what it was for. I still have one of those two gallon thick glass jars made by Westinghouse in my collection. We have some at IRM and they use sodium hydroxide for an electrolyte instead of acid, just like trolley batteries.

Wow! What a fabulous mixed manifest! 3 locomotives leading and a trailing DPU. It carried lots of steel pipe, heavy plate steel, coil steel, and an open door TTX box car that appeared to be untagged and beautiful. The DPU was working hard and sounding fantastic! This was my kind of long train. Add to this a shout-out from my friend Scott, and it couldn't get much better, could it? 😃😃😃😃😃❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍

Another great one Scott. The Gaines house is a cool location. And a great find on that bottle. It's very possible that it is the survivor of an old trash dump from the house. How it got to the location where you found it is anybody's guess but it's probably pretty certain a dump would have been located a little distance away from the house. Thanks for sharing that, and the video.
@1960gambitАй бұрын
Thanks Lou! Yes, I was really surprised to find that bottle where it was. It`s about a 100 yards downhill from the house. I suspect that a railroad worker back in the day just tossed it there and it was covered by dirt over the years. I guess some of it washed off and I spotted it!

Morning Scott. My sons’ school is right next to the NS Dayton District in Columbus and a 7 locomotive train went by about 8 in the morning heading to Cincinnati. It has a bunch of auto racks on it so I’m wondering if it was the same one.

I would say it was. The Dayton District runs down to Cincy to the Gest Street Yard then they cross the Ohio River from there.

Gotta love old finds. Unit trains: Can you tell which direction they go loaded adn return empty?

The grain trains seem to be loaded heading South and come back North empty. It varies with the cargo though on the other unit trains. Coal goes both ways it seems.
