Putting on the gloves before retrieving the ignition key from your pocket is hell annoying. Forgetting to reset the trip metre after you fill up is annoying. Throwing on your dry riding gear inside the house only to walk out of the front door to find that it is lightly raining is really damn annoying. Forgetting to remove your eye glasses before removing your helmet is annoying and painful. Stalling your bike after your battery just barely started it the first time is "I guess I will ride it tomorrow"annoying.

All of these. Every one. Right from the start, as soon as you mentioned battery I *knew* it would be from those fucking square nuts that always tip at a slight angle or get pushed down a bit to far or whatever else. I actually have a spare battery because I'm a moron who leaves his keys in his bike and it turned on regularly, so I've had to swap and fix batteries a lot. I'm so, so familiar with that. There's a solution! Take the battery out of the bike. Unthread the bolt until it's flush with the bottom of the nut. Hold the bolt with the nut pulled tight against the battery terminal, and squirt some hot glue/etc/silicone/rolled up electrical tape/anything underneath the nut. This way it can't move, and is always right easy to thread in to. Hot glue is my favourite for this, it lasts longest and is easy to remove with a bit of heat should you ever need to. Never struggle to thread those bolts into the terminal again.

I’m on my 22nd bike, 30+ years of riding. I have given in and purchased a Goldwing and accepted my position in life as uncle hi-viz. I have also spent probably 30 minutes of my life over the past year panicking when my Goldwing wouldn’t start because the Killswitch is a fucking dial like device and if you bump it one way or another the bike doesn’t start. It is the only bike I have ever accidentally hit the Killswitch on because all the others are massive red rocker buttons. I just have never accidentally depressed and not realized it. But that Goldwing has sent me into a panic multiple times.

Unscrewing two tiny screws that hold on a bit of air cleaner trim. One drops and doesn’t hit the floor. It’s somewhere in the frame. I spent 15 minutes blowing the area with compressed air hoping I could force it out, but no luck. I wrote it off as lost. About a week later I returned from a ride. I pulled in the garage and put the kick stand down. Darned if that little sucker didn’t fall out and land on the floor as I was looking down. And yea, I’ve had the battery terminals not reaching the nuts in the terminal.

Simple tip for the battery terminals I've used on every bike I own that has a battery (all six of 'em): Take the vent tube that comes with your new battery, or a comparable vinyl hose. Clip a short length off it, maybe 3/4", or however wide your terminal is. Now, take the nuts of the battery, slide them into the terminal, and stuff the bits up tube underneath. When the bolts are out, the tubing holds the nuts nice and tight to the top of the battery terminal. When you put them in, the bolt squishes them down, ready to pop back up when the bolt comes back out again. Simple, cheap, easy, and works like a charm.

Solution to Thing 1: Kick start. My buddy's 2022 Harley had a dead battery a few months ago, and I reminded him *that* was *exactly* why I don't want a newer, EFI bike. Then he bought a 2017 too, and its battery went flat after about a week. Kick start. My XS650 doesn't give a darn how many volts or amps are in the battery, it fires on the first kick every single time above freezing, and the third kick below. Every. Single. Time.

Also, wiping up splashed fuel with paper towel can scratch your paint if there's any dirt on it. Replace your fuel cap, and rinse it away with water if you want prevent scratching your paint.

Two 12v piezo buzzers from the electronics did the trick. Brilliant!! You forgot one though. It's winter, you've got a ton of gear on, you start riding and realise you forgot to put your ear plugs in!! That really is annoying. Or while working on your VTR you drop an airbox screw, it's falls into the v off the engine. There's literally no way to retrieve it without removing the airbox, carbs and maybe the expansion bottle for the cooling system.

cleaning chain lube off the rear wheel was a pain till I tried $3 lemon furniture polish from the dollar store. Crap just wipes right off and the furniture polish helps resist dust as well. Same furniture polish works as a spray and shine for the bike as well as the helmet and wind screens. For the battery spin the little bolt with a mechanics magnet and it will draw the little nut right up to the bolt and thread on.

What in tarnation is that torx size? is it t25? t27? t30? Oh crap I grabbed the security torx set AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Don't forget JIS #2 fun times. It's more fun when you don't have a kickstand or neutral cutoff switch. Then you hit the ignition, and the bike lurches forward 2-3 feet before you let off and say "what a retard". Then you get on an 80's suzuki and forget to pull in the clutch when starting ah.

Holy shit, I just went through this Friday & Saturday. I put my bike up for sale (2014 ZX6R ABS) and got more interest than I expected. I put in a new battery, have tons of accessories so I spent 6 hours making sure they all worked. I was up till 3am Saturday morning just to give up. I spent 3 hours trying to get my front brake reservoir to clear my double bubble Windscreen with my 2" Riser clip-ons. So I finally get it all back together, 2 hours past the time he was supposed to be there and he never showed up. I was kinda relieved, because I was done for the day. I've done this dozens of times. The bike is in immaculant condition. I swapped in the factory rearsets and took off my Driven Racing rearsets. Well when I did this, I switched to a Rear Left-Hand Thumb Brake (car accident in Dallas years ago; I can't use my right foot all that well anymore) and I can't find the odd sized banjo bolt to my ABS pump. I had used a normal length banjo bolts with my steel braided lines. The factory one uses a longer banjo bolt because the OEM line has a riser on it to clear the other lines on the ABS pump. Then I couldn't find the right length shift rod. Still haven't figured out how to clear the brake fluid reservoir yet. How the bolt hole is angled & these risers & Puig Double Bubble W/S, makes it very difficult. Lost a couple 10mm sockets too

CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT: Do twisting and braiding instead of solder and crimp splices. Fun fact! 2 dissimilar metals in the presence of an electrolyte (humidity alone can be an electrolytic source) creates a process known as galvanic reaction. Anyone ever noticed green corrosion after some time has passed located at the location of a soldered or crimp spliced joint? Galvanic reaction. (If splicing a zinc & a copper wire crimp or solder away. You're fuct anyway and soldering/crimp splicing is a better joint.)

Oh, those gosh darned retaining nuts!!! Made me rage quit more than once! As for bolts going missing within the bike? Just make sure you stuff a towel or rag under the F4i's CCTL when it's time to replace it. Don't ask me how I know... 🤣 Still can't strap up my helmet with gloves on... I'll pay more for gas if it means I can regulate the flow easily (looking at you, Costco!)...

All my riding life had Japanese bikes and one Harley. Now in my sixties I got severely nostalgic for the looks of my first bike a Honda CB-350 and purchased a Triumph Street Twin. How embarrassing to be at the gas station fighting the stupid gas cap. Why the British had to be different from everyone else?

1) Use the right tools. Put the screwdriver away and use a hex driver. Pay attention to what you are doing. Profit. 2) It is what it is, practice makes things easier. 3) Crimping is better where there might be vibration. If you have to solder, build a routine so you don't forget steps. 4) Keep spare hardware. If you have the service manual for your bike they often have a hardware list. Just put a box together with several of every size. Replace what you use ahead of time. Some bolts shouldn't be reused, keep plenty of those on hand. Problem solved. 5) Keep your tools organized and you don't lose them. If the spot is empty you haven't put it away yet it's time to double check. 6) Disable kickstand kill switches. They are evil and unnecessary if you have real skills. 7) Put your gear on in the same order every time and you tend to forget steps less often. Don't let yourself get lazy about it and short cut. 8) Filling your tank isn't that complicated. Lift, let it drip, put a paper towel from he windshield washing station under the nozzle, put it away. If they are out of towels, that's why you keep a rag on the bike. Life gets easier when you use your head for something other than a hat rack.

I honestly don't understand why the terminals aren't threaded now. Or take the blocks and wield them in place. I know powersports batts are stupid expensive, but i'd pay like an extra $20 for a feature like that. The cheaper ETX batts can do it. So why can't the other manufactures do it? Or like slightly longer bolts? That way I don't have to put a tiny piece of folded cardboard under the blocks.

That damn kickstand gets me at least twice a week. I'm super paranoid about splashing gasoline though, so that STILL hasn't happened to me yet. Mainly because I hate huffing gas all day so... Super careful. Oh what gets me almost every ride though is about to kick it into 1st and after fighting with the heated gloves, getting the cameras synced, and getting the helmet fastened - realizing I forgot to put my damn ear plugs in... I'm old and have had a lot of explosions and gunfire close to the head so I can't afford to NOT wear plugs😂

I have an Electraglide and have changed the battery, I must add that in order to install the terminals there is a 3/4 round "D" shaped spacer that goes on the outside between the terminal and the terminal block on the battery. If you substitute ANYTHING for that, the terminal will vibrate loose on a long ride. On my Harley it will make the engine cut out, make the ammeter act crazy, and damage the voltage regulator if you dont fix it fast enough. On a Sturgis run from south Texas, on the way back i was 200 miles from home and this very issue occurred. I have gear in my back seat, and on all of my saddle bags. Hell getting the seat off. Its happened more than once i am ashamed to say.

Manufacturer uses two different socket sizes for your oil drain plugs Wiring for the headlight is so jammed in there it takes you 20 minutes to just try and stuff it all back after changing the bulb A side panel is press fit with hole grommets. You know exactly how it lines up and have taken it off 100 times but you can never line the panel up correctly and it's 5 minutes of cursing to get it to go back on Figuring out which way to slide open the vents on your new helmet because the manufacturer used a different direction than the last one you had Geared up, ready to go, bike started, everything strapped tight and you get this incredible itch on your foot or head that requires you to rip your gear off immediately to scratch it. Pulling your credit card out to pay at the pump without taking your gloves off. It'd be quicker to just pull your gloves off, but no no, you have to do this THIS way. Checking the tire pressure on your rear and the valve is lined up perfectly hidden behind the chain/belt and exhaust

The bugs are annoying, for some reason it's always a bug in the middle of the windshield in the first 15 minutes and then nothing, maybe one or two for the remainder of the ride, even if you ride the whole day. The absolutely worst thing is the battery nuts, however. A combo of #1 and #4 (I think). While cars somehow manage to have both batteries and cables in one piece, this is apparently impossible on bikes. And the worst thing? They are unique, not common nuts. Sure, the screws are all unique too but you can just go to a dealer and for a small price of few dollars per screw you can buy them - not the battery nuts, however. They are only sold with batteries. So you're mounting the battery back, paying attention to the screw, cable, terminal, when suddenly your finger slips - and you hear a single ping. Nothing falls to the ground. You go onto your knees, check, try to lay the bike down on one side, on the other, nothing. Now you can throw an otherwise perfect battery out.

Don't use electrical tape. Use Nitto No. 11 rubber tape. It is self-amalgamating, which means that it sticks to itself and forms a solid rubber sleeve around the connection. Has to be cut off, won't unroll.

I'm an old guy but a new rider who's wrenched on several cars. The 10mm is universal. Even on cars. Same damn problem! Those nuts in the battery was a new one on me. Put a dab of grease on it, set it down, used the screw driver to line it up, and the grease holds it in place. The other thing that's hit that's different is they use Loctite on everything! Quickly learned if you don't want to bugger up those "phillips" screws trying to remove them then you'd better get a set of JIS screwdrivers. That was a new one on me!

At least in your state, you don't have evap cushions that need to be pressed to dispense the gas from the pump. Push that spring back with one hand, while also balancing the nozzle over the tank and pulling the trigger with 2 fingers to avoid the early cutoff. Hope you do it right or the lever will go limp and smack your fingers. A lot of extra work just to get that extra 5 miles before I have to fill up again.

Battery under the seat, bike with a significant lean. It was like 10 years ago I was under an evacuation notice from whatever hurricane was coming through so I’m making a run for it out of the state of Florida on my V-Strom 1000 and the battery dies when I’m stopped to get gas at I swear the only place that had gas left in central Florida at that point. Managed to bum a ride to batteries plus about 10 miles away and then had to carry the battery back which took me like three and a half hours only to endure the hell of trying to get those cables attached in the dark, because the gas station was closed at that point because they too were fleeing the state. I wound up zip tying the cables to the terminals because I couldn’t get it to work with what I had available to me. When I finally stopped in Lexington Kentucky like 18 hours later like 30 hours on the hoof at this point, I obviously crashed out and the next morning with daylight and a Walmart two blocks away I was able to get the battery installed correctly but up to that point every time I had stopped for gas, which was four more times on my travel to Lexington I had to pop the seat and fiddle with the zip ties to get the connection Good enough to crank the bike over again.

Thing doesn't slide in right and had to take it out two or three times because it was just stay in an angle. my mild annoyance has nothing to do with doing your own work but rather getting someone else to do it. I had decided I was going to get the place where I bought it to do the work.. a certified Honda dealership that exclusively sold Honda. 600 miles in and I take it in for first service. I get the bike back with a full checklist of health and told to enjoy it. 2000 miles and a winter storage later and I pull it out and do my checks... and there is little to no oil. There was no splatter or drips in the place I had stored it for several months so it had to of gone in like that.,,, The real kicker? I asked they fixed the mistake, they said bring it in for an oil change and then charged me full goddam price for said oil change. I f*cking hate these people.

Damn it He's right about the battery! I could barely call myself a motorcycle rider because I used to race dirt bikes when I was young and just recently own a 250 scooter. But when I went to swap out that battery, the boat fell through a hole in the battery tray into the front end of the scooter. I had to take apart half of the plastics just the magically find the boat sitting on the ground that I already searched like five times. It must have silently fell while I was disassembling the plastic

#1 - put a bit of folded cardstock under the nut. This will hold it up against the terminal so the screw has no trouble engaging the threads. Also, as the cardstock is soft, it will compress and not keep the screw from tightening properly.

Regarding forgetting heat shrink wrap there's a product called "Solder seal wire connector" It includes a solder, wrap, water proof connector in 1 convenient product and you only need a heat gun to install. Works great and much easier! And great list, I especially hate those battery terminal connectors and how the rectangle part can fall out easily when you unscrew the bolt. Why don't they just change the design so it will hold the rectangle part? To get around this after I disconnect all connections I then install the bolt again so nothing will fall out when i remove the battery.
