@@craigstewart1532 you are so right. They have Hardin as the deadlist, he was probably the most dangerous because of his mental problem made him so unpredictable. According to what was written back then Doc Holiday was probably the fastest of them all. It was said you couldn't see his hand move, you only saw a blurr. While Wild Bill was probably the deadlist shot. And Clay Allison was just plain fast, crazy, mean and deadly with gun and knife. He sat and had dinner with a man who come to town to kill him even after the towns people had warned him. After the shooting , people asked why have dinner with the man who came here just to kill you? Allison replied, I hate to send a man to hell on a empty stomach!

Wild Bill did not kill Mr. Tutt in a "fast Draw" contest. They began shooting at each other from a distance. Wild Bill did not start shooting wildly like Mr. Tutt, he took careful and deliberate aim and shot Mr. Tutt in the heart at 75 yards using his 1851 Colt Navy revolver.

A little Know fact about Colt revolvers of those days, army specs called for them to be sighted to 75 yards right up into the 20th century that included the dragoons right on through the navy and army cap and ball types right into SAA production. There was no difference between military and civilian versions save for government property markings. Having fired both replica and shootable originals all if in good shape were up were easily capable of hitting a man at 100 yards

You're the one that should do a little research my friend, it was the first witnessed and recorded (one of the few) fast draw duels. Each man fired one shot at the same time. According to wittiness's each stood sideways, had their pistols holstered drew and fired once, Tutt fired with one hand, Hickok brought his pistol up rested it on his free arm in one motion and fired once. The slug struck Tutt in the left side. Witnesses who didn't see the shootout said they only heard one shot. two witnesses said Tutt was the first to reach for his pistol which was one of the reasons Hickok was acquitted.

They are more accurate than most people realize. As 8aleph says, they are, or they attempted to sight them in at fairly long distances. At shorter distances they are known to shoot high. Originals in good condition can shoot 10 or 12 moa. When fairly new, with a tight fitting ball, no wadding & a clean barrel they could probably pull off 9, maybe even 8 moa. With no error on the shooters part, that means they could put a ball somewhere in an 8 or 9 inch ring from 100 yards. By the later half of the 1800's they had good enough machine tools & the knowledge to get accuracy down pretty well. High quality modern handguns don't do much better. It's still one hell of a shot, especially when the target isn't a piece of paper & won't shoot back.

Interesting side note. Doc Holliday was one of very, very few gun slingers that died with his boots off (i.e. The TB killed him, not another gunslinger as was usually the case). There is a reference to this in the movie Tombstone. Doc (played by Val Killmore) looks down at his feet, and says: "Well looky there"!

By age 19, Elfego Baca was already one of the fastest guns in the New Mexico territory. Elfego was a gunman, lawman, lawyer, and politician. Elfego's Frisco shootout against a bunch of men was as dramatic as it gets. Elfego survived over 1000 shots in a small house with a sunken floor. He killed four and wounded 8 of his attackers. He surrendered because he was running out of ammunition.

I would have thought they should have put Bass Reeves in this countdown. He is one of those famous people you never heard of. He was a runaway slave who became a federal marshal in the Oklahoma Territory who never failed to bring back someone dead or alive. According to one account one man surrendered because he had a nightmare that Reeves was coming after him. As for gunfights he survived everyone of them he was in proving he was a fighter and good with a gun. One show suggested that he might have been a roundabout inspiration for the Lone Ranger.

Here’s an interesting little tidbit of information for ya. In the movie “Tombstone”, after “Wyatt Earp” leaves “Doc Holidays” side in the hospital, Doc looks down at his bare feet and says: “Well lookie their”, and chuckles for a second before they switch scenes. Why is this important? Most gun fighters of the time died with there boots on-either in gun fights, or being shot in the back, or something of the like. It was very rare for them to die in the way Doc Holiday did. With his boots off.

Another story goes that the pair met at Fort Griffin,TX. Wyatt was working as a detective for Wells Fargo hunting onetime associate of Billy the Kid, Dirty Dave Rudebaugh. A bartender Wyatt had met in Dodge steered him to Doc for information of said desperado. It is known that Doc and Kate began their tempestuous relation in Fort Griffin, and together effected a sensational escape from that town. I find this story highly credible.

I find the Deacon Miller fellow fascinating. Didn't drink or smoke. Went to church often , but was a stone cold killer. Worse a killer for hire. During the golden age of piracy there was another infamous character. A pirate by the name of Bartholomew Roberts. Black Bart. Also never drank and held mass on his pirate ship. I wonder if they though reconciling their actions and muderous ways by living clean lives and worshipping God. Or were they preparing thesmselves for the afterlife. Cause lord knows they would've had to have done a lot of repenting to enter those pearly gates. Who knows? Only God I guess.

I'm related to Doc Holliday. He was a cousin several times removed on my father's side. He met Wyatt Earp in Fort Griffin, Texas not Tombstone. Even wikipedia has a few inaccuracies about him. It was only ever 100% verified that he killed ONE person. That was Tom McClaury at the OK Corral. Most of what is known about him is taken from Wyatt Earps autobiography. Unfortunately Wyatt tended to embellish things and occasionally just make things up. Doc also did quite a bit of story telling of his own just to build up a fearsome reputation. The reason for this is that he was only about 5'7 and by the time he arrived in Tombstone tuberculosis had withered his weight down to about 125lbs. He was physically frail and needed to be feared as a first line of defense.

I'm a descendant of John Wesley Hardin, and I read about him as a kid because I was fascinated by the stories my family told me. Your presentation of him is very skewed, and you failed to mention WHY he was put on that path. Then you failed to mention he passed the bar exam while in prison, and began practicing law after he was released before the coward, John Selman, shot him in the back. Given the same circumstances, I would do EXACTLY what John Wesley Hardin did with no shame whatsoever. He was the defender. The attacker should always know they can legally be killed. Even if the attacker wears a badge.

At that time Hardin was no cleared of all legal problems as he served his time in prison and was no a practicing attorney. How true and accurate is that story. PS I will subscribe to your channel as sometimes there are better historians than the actual family members who would have with more passion focused on the facts or made a better effort in removing falsehoods regarding their own family member. Some wrong info here, but Wyatt Earp really WAS a badass. We don't know for sure if he was a bad guy or not, stories vary. But he was brave as hell and even though bullets went through his coat and otherwise came close, he never even got touched by a bullet, ever. That scene in Tombstone where Doc Holliday says "He's down at the creek - walkin on the water!" was just Hollywood, but I could see how people around him might start feeling that way.

Best description I’ve heard about the old west was from a movie, can’t remember the name. When an old timer was asked about how it really was in the west during the good old days, the reply was “raggedy ass!” I believe most of the stories have be glamorized to hide THAT fact, and I grew up out west. I love the west and have worked as a cowboy and a farmer too, but taking into consideration the conditions and personalities involved I’m sure it was “raggedy assed!”

I would revise this list and ADD; John KING Fisher, Ben Thompson, and Bill Longley----ALL VERY BAD MEN. However one must consider on What Basis is Considered a Gunfighter? To me those who were Ambush Killers like Deacon Miller and Tom Horn need to be Kicked Off the List, and only those to be considered would need to have a few Face To Face Gunfights that were accurately noted with witnesses. John Wesley Hardin to me was definitely #1, John King Fisher #2, Ben Thompson #3 (all 3 men were from Texas with each having over 26 Kills). Clay Allison #4 (a true Maniac), Wyatt Earp #5, Wild Bill Hickok #6, Also, one must also consider which Gunfighters were actually Serial Killers. But Damn, that John Wesley Hardin was truly a BADASS.

Clay Allison was kicked in the head by a pack mule while he served in the Confederate army, the injury left him with periodic severe head aches and drinking bouts that accompanied the head aches while drinking Allison was violent and unpredictable at such times. Tom Horn was no murderer he was a punishment on thieves stealing his employers' cattle, the law enforcement of the day being unwilling to do so. The Deputy US Marshall that framed him did so at the behest of the Wyoming cattle growers association and is a possible for the killing Horn was hung for being also a cattle growers assoc. detective as well

The Clanton faction had no weapons so I guess Morgan Virgil and Doc were wounded by very hard spit. Thar was one of Ike's more ludicrous claims. If the Clantons were unarmed and the Earps wanted to shoot them down then the unarmed Ike would have died. One lie that the Earps most likely said was that Billy and Frank cocked their weapons first, odds are that it was Doc on the shotgun prompting Virgil to say 'no no I don't what this' or something close to that. And saying that Morgan didn't die in a shootout is kind of splitting hairs.

Drew Pit What about Porter Rockwell??!
@Idahoguy10157
@Idahoguy10157 5 жыл бұрын
Dallas Tex.... Orrin Porter Rockwell was charged, tried, and found not guilty of the attempted murder of a Missouri Governor. His defense? A hostile Missouri jury believed that if Rockwell was the assassin the Governor would be dead! Proof of innocence! Rockwell was a dangerous man, but enigmatic. He wasn’t found guilty of any serious crime. Deaths that were blamed on Rockwell were unprovable. One of the more intriguing characters in American history

There's *some* merit to that argument, but at that point, I'd say one has crossed the line from gun fighter to serial killer... I mean, look at it: Tom Horn and John Wesley Hardin **were** probably just serial killers with guns.
@Idahoguy10157
@Idahoguy10157 5 жыл бұрын
Bird Topaz .... John Wesley Hardin killed people for emotional reasons. Like pleasure, rage, power. Tom Horn as far as we know was in it for the money. I don’t think we know of Horn killing other than for money. Orrin Porter Rockwell had religious loyalty reasons as a motive. Rather than personal gain. If any of the three were after you you’d best have a Will and your affairs in order!

You should add Frank Hamer (surprisingly gets little mention) who killed Bonnie and Clyde. He was involved in gun fights prior to that. Also, Bass Reeves was a definite tough guy. These two do not get old western credit they deserve.

They did get one thing right. Hardin was the worse killer of all of them. Rumors say he shot a man for snoring and he stood up to Wild Bill when Bill tried to arrest him using that flipping upside pistol move to get the upper hand.

Very good. Wes was the top of the old West. I also list Doc as the second because of consumption he was a walking dead man. Wyatt being his best friend and everyone has come to the conclusion at the OK gunfight that when they shouted to be disarmed Doc cocked both barrels of the scatter gun ,they were past the point of no return.

Hardin spent 16 years in a Texas prison. it was said Hardin killed 27 men. He had actually killed 42 and never shot anyone in the back. He was a lawyer and earned his law degree in prison. So after killing all those men and surviving prison and did not get hanged by a mob. That is impressive. Being in the custody of the Texas Rangers is probably how he survived.

Oh come on now, Wyatt Earp was not a gunslinger, nor was he famous in his own time. Before he killed Frank McLaury at the OK Corral he had never killed anybody. After the OK Corral he's known to have (personally) killed 2 others, during his vendetta ride, Pete Spence at the Tucson train station and Curly Bill Brocious at Iron Springs, Az.

Fast draw gunfights exist just in Hollywood movies, most of time, it was ambushes, or shots in the back, and they used shotguns or coach guns....Like Miller for ex.
@TheWartHawg
@TheWartHawg 7 жыл бұрын
I think Miller used a rifle and shot from a distance, rather than a shotgun, but your point is solid. Very few "gunfighters" actually fought. Most were just murderers.
