I don’t normally give out my secrets but the only way any of this works is to take a shower with him first. Give him a (FULL) shower. Do it sensually so he doesn’t detect that you are avoiding a traumatic experience for yourself. Another tip is to allow him to start this process himself and see how he behaves in the shower.
