One of them in FF7 that I thought was weird even as a kid was Ghirofelgo in the ShinRa Mansion - The dude swinging on a chain that has a huge blade for his lower half body... Maybe it was just the animation of him trying to get back up on the chain when he fell. Made it seem like we're just beating up some handicapped dude that cant even use a can or wheelchair. Poor guy must just be hanging around like a chandalier all day just waiting for Cloud and company to walk by. :-) Random ass enemy...

There was a point where I was playing through FF7 when Pete Yorn's "Life on a Chain" was all over the radio, and every time I ran into one, it would get the song stuck in my head. The swinging being close enough to the tempo of the song and the first line being "I live on a chain" was enough to get me every time.

"A half naked lady riding atop some sort of reptile" - isn't that a tapir? In Japanese folklore, they're dream eaters - specifically, they eat nightmares, which is why it makes sense for them to appear in the dream world.

I think Mover should get a shout out. They appear in scant few mainline FF games, but they are quite memorable in most of the ones where they show up. Their design and name are bizarre, their battles are gimmicky, and their rewards after battle are often immense. In particular I think the FF9 variation is quite obscure due to only appearing on Terra (which is available only briefly and then becomes inaccessible) and thus not being great for end game grinding like they are in other games
@Forever_Zero

the Intangir is a weird enemy. It is from FF6 and is found only in one obscure place where you would never think to go because there is nothing there and nothing in the game hints that you should be there unlike the dinosaur forest. The monster also does not appear all the time. Instead rabbit enemies from the beginning of the game appear most often. Then suddenly you are faced with one of the most powerful monsters in the game. Seriously this thing has more HP than most bosses and many of the end game monsters. It also hits like a truck and is immune to all elemental damage.

'Agree' for the remark that FFVII particularly takes the cake for bizarre enemy design- I think usually-large doses of funny mushrooms were involved 😆. Besides the aforementioned Hell House and Heavy Tank, there's Eligor, Dorky Face, Ghirofelgo, Balba Velamyu, Jayjujayme, Scissors, Ammonite, Christopher, and Magic Pot, and the 3 types of Unknowns. Not sure if it's in X, or X Remaster (or both), but, when fighting the Demonoliths, Rikku sometimes quips "Who actually designs these things?!?". Worth a chuckle. 😄

One of the best materia in the game is in that burnt out reactor near the triceratank. 2x Cut. It's..amazing. You can do 9999 multiple times with it, and it upgrades to 4x cut eventually. It also turns into the less useful Slash which is an instant battle finisher, but in a game where the damage caps at 9999 multi-hit attacks are king.

I thought for sure the ffx weirdest creature was spherimorph. When you talked about demon wall I was like ohh it has to be spherimorph for sure! I didn't find demonolith that obscure.
@cloudvii7777
@cloudvii7777 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, demonolith are same as demon wall and they appear in loads of dif areas. Not sure spherimorph would count as it a story boss. I thought Barbatos (inside Sin) was obscure. What is it? How does it eat with those shields coming out its arms and where does it get the bombs from and where are they fired from?
@joshuafoster8726
@joshuafoster8726 10 ай бұрын
@cloudvii7777 to he fair it was 7 obscure monsters so for that reason I'd stick to spherimorph even if it is a story boss it's still just the most bizarre monster I reckon in terms of "wtf is this?" 🤣 like a ball of water that turns solid and crushes you 🤣 agree with you too thag MF looked like a hand grenade mixed with a lychee 🤣 though I reckon 10 had some of the strangest creatures it's hard to pick just one but it's definitely not demonolith

I had to look up the name, but my vote would be the YKT-63. It's a kickboxing robot-looking thing. FFX does a lot of recolors, so its hard to pick something obscure, but I don't believe this thing has been anywhere else.

I think the Rider's beast is a tapir or a Baku. It does look reptile like though.
@ShinParisu

4:20 I am inclined to believe that is a tapir with a lady riding on it. Seeing how eastern folklore often associates them with incense or smoke and the ability to come into dreams it may not be too far fetched to think the rider may be an illusion made of smoke to allure unsuspecting victims so the real enemy, the tapir, can feast upon their dreams. Examples of this can be found in Pokemon with Drowzee, Hypno, Munna and Musharna. As well as in Digimon with the digimon Tapirmon (known in japan as Bakumon). Seeing how it uses skills that damage the player, while recovering itself akin to feeding off as well as it being found within the dreamscape I believe gives creedence to my hypothesis.

Test 0 from FFVII. Japanese exclusive enemy found only at the bottom of the well in Corel Prison. It’s not meant to be fought, but it was left in the game. The writers of the Versus guide even included them in the guide, mentioning that they might not be in the US version of the game.

Final Fantasy IX has two enemies that appear in only one screen each. The Lamia in Gizamaluke Grotto and one in the screen right before entering the Black Mage Village. You may actually not even fight them if no random encounter is triggered. Stuff like this just doesn't happen anymore. Yes we get unique enemies that appear in only one place but usually they are recycled texture swaps with altered stats, some special boss or hunt or whatever. FFIX just had so many unique enemies some you might not even find. FF 8 and 9 have very very few texture/palette swapped enemies. I think maybe 3 or 4 in VIII and I guess only 1 in IX. Nowadays lots of RPGs take the same enemies and palette swap them. This isn't the end of the world but it also makes encounters less surprising. You find yet another wolf monster, you kinda know how wolf monsters fight by now even if they have slightly different stats and abilities. From I'd say FF6 to 9 you'd get so many unique and weird monsters that you really had no idea what to expect and that made random encounters more fun. VI had a ton of palette swaps but also so so many unique enemies, 7 had few palette swaps but rare. From FFX and onwards is palette swaps all the way.

I'd like to see a top 7 of different boss battles or fights that change the way the story can progress if you win or lose. Like the Chocobo Eater in final fantasy 10 gives different cut scenes and routes depending on if you beat it or if it shoves you off the cliff🎉

Loved Rebirth but it's pretty disappointing that they turned Heavy Tank into a regular ole dinosaur. (It's called Maloceros in English. In Japanese it's called Heavy Tank). It's also disappointing that Ghirofelgo isn't in Rebirth either. Shinra Mansion ended up being disappointing overall. But at least they gave us weird Lost Number enemy from the locked safe in the original.

The "reptile-like" animal ridden by the Alluring Rider is actually a Baku. It's a tapir-like demon from Japanese myth that is known to be capable of devouring dreams. That explains why that enemy appears in a dream setting.

Honestly, I'd have called this 7 Most Interesting Obscure Monsters, or something like that. Most aren't really the most obscure in their own games, and a few made multiple game appearances. As to suggestions for more, I always found Righty/Lefty/Visage to be really weird. And Peeper is a classic for a monster that really gives a feel to a place.

Considering its relevance to the story (Zack), as well as having some decent shops, finding the Titan summon, and fighting & stealing from Rude & Reno, and also being a grinding spot for those Power Sources, it's certainly not something you SHOULD skip, unless you're a speedrunner.
