One of them in FF7 that I thought was weird even as a kid was Ghirofelgo in the ShinRa Mansion - The dude swinging on a chain that has a huge blade for his lower half body... Maybe it was just the animation of him trying to get back up on the chain when he fell. Made it seem like we're just beating up some handicapped dude that cant even use a can or wheelchair. Poor guy must just be hanging around like a chandalier all day just waiting for Cloud and company to walk by. :-) Random ass enemy...

Their design and name are bizarre, their battles are gimmicky, and their rewards after battle are often immense. 4:20 I am inclined to believe that is a tapir with a lady riding on it. Seeing how eastern folklore often associates them with incense or smoke and the ability to come into dreams it may not be too far fetched to think the rider may be an illusion made of smoke to allure unsuspecting victims so the real enemy, the tapir, can feast upon their dreams. Examples of this can be found in Pokemon with Drowzee, Hypno, Munna and Musharna. As well as in Digimon with the digimon Tapirmon (known in japan as Bakumon). Seeing how it uses skills that damage the player, while recovering itself akin to feeding off as well as it being found within the dreamscape I believe gives creedence to my hypothesis.

Final Fantasy IX has two enemies that appear in only one screen each. The Lamia in Gizamaluke Grotto and one in the screen right before entering the Black Mage Village. You may actually not even fight them if no random encounter is triggered. Stuff like this just doesn't happen anymore. Yes we get unique enemies that appear in only one place but usually they are recycled texture swaps with altered stats, some special boss or hunt or whatever. FFIX just had so many unique enemies some you might not even find. FF 8 and 9 have very very few texture/palette swapped enemies. I think maybe 3 or 4 in VIII and I guess only 1 in IX. Nowadays lots of RPGs take the same enemies and palette swap them. This isn't the end of the world but it also makes encounters less surprising. You find yet another wolf monster, you kinda know how wolf monsters fight by now even if they have slightly different stats and abilities. From I'd say FF6 to 9 you'd get so many unique and weird monsters that you really had no idea what to expect and that made random encounters more fun. VI had a ton of palette swaps but also so so many unique enemies, 7 had few palette swaps but rare. From FFX and onwards is palette swaps all the way.

The "reptile-like" animal ridden by the Alluring Rider is actually a Baku. It's a tapir-like demon from Japanese myth that is known to be capable of devouring dreams. That explains why that enemy appears in a dream setting.

Honestly, I'd have called this 7 Most Interesting Obscure Monsters, or something like that. Most aren't really the most obscure in their own games, and a few made multiple game appearances. As to suggestions for more, I always found Righty/Lefty/Visage to be really weird. And Peeper is a classic for a monster that really gives a feel to a place.

Absolutely! Ghirofelgo too, that thing is odd, but I suppose in the location of the Shinra mansion, perhaps it makes sense.

Considering its relevance to the story (Zack), as well as having some decent shops, finding the Titan summon, and fighting & stealing from Rude & Reno, and also being a grinding spot for those Power Sources, it's certainly not something you SHOULD skip, unless you're a speedrunner.
@toddclawson361910 ай бұрын
@@Nanobot1989 Yeah. I completely skipped it the first time I played the game except for right after Temple of the Ancients. I just didn't know it was even there until then.

FF12 also kind of had a demon wall boss? I remember being stuck on it for ages
@Animebryan210 ай бұрын
Yup. 2 Demon Walls, an OP optional one you can run from or beat if you've power leveled, and a mandatory one that's much easier to beat.
