I started to believe this sort of propaganda and stuck up for pitbulls but had to learn the hard way and then I researched more. there are multiple reasons why pits get an undeserved bad rap. 1. Around 60% of dogs called pits or pit mixes are misidentified as pitbulls. There is no way to reliably guess a dog mix’s genetic makeup by the shape of the head, as a “pitbull shape” is a very common one belonging to many breeds. Testing of dogs in shelters and ones taken by police for aggressive behavior show that many of them are not even pitbulls. 2. “Pitbull” isn’t just one breed at all, it’s 30+ breeds. Keep that in mind as well when viewing the 60% fatalities bite statistic. 3. APBTs, the “true” pitbull breed, passed the AKC temperament test at a higher percentage than golden retrievers. 4. No dogs are bred to be human aggressive. Human aggressive fighting dogs were killed, human aggression is not a desired trait for fighting dogs handled by humans. 5. When all of this is taken into account, the statistics for bites can be whittled down to a much smaller percentage of around 2.5% fatalities belonging to four different breeds. 6. Small dogs bite more than pitbulls and larger dog breeds. However, they aren’t reported because most bites can be treated at home. Pitbulls may simply be more lethal once they attack, but their bite force isn’t even as high as other breeds. 7. My personal favorite: 94% of all dog related fatalities are males, and 92% of those males are not neutered. Being intact is a much better and more reliable indicator of predicting aggression than breed. If a pitbull is neutered, the chance of attack is greatly reduced; a figure that is the same for all breeds. 8. Pitbull-looking dogs are also the breeds most often acquired by criminal owners, or people living in unsafe areas. They are also the most abused breed. 9. Fatalities are about 40 a year. Though tragic, it’s not an epidemic. Taking all this into account, your average fixed adopted pitbull mix on the street is completely safe. Perhaps it is time for more research.

I would agree with you about leaving a child alone with any animal, even a cat. However, any dog (breed) who has been cruelly mistreated will have the potential to be aggressive or dangerous. Statistically pit bull type dogs have been the most cruelly treated domesticated dogs especially in the USA (don't know where you are). Close to 1.5 million pit bull breed dogs have been euthanized by the human animal control system in the USA, and I'm pretty sure there have not been that many humans killed by pit bull type dogs.

They are not going to tell you about every pitbull ever just to make sure you have the full picture of the breed before they tell you something bad about it. I grew up with a pitbull that was less aggressive then our German Shepard and was afraid of my grandmother’s Chihuahua mix. She never bit, bared her teeth, or even growled. Long ago, when my sister's American Staffordshire was young she swallowed a toy soldier. I had to open her mouth and reach down her throat to prevent it from choking her or damaging her internally. She didn't understand why I was doing this and she didn't like it at all. She even growled. But she never closed her jaws. At the time I was thinking "Well, you just got over any remaining fears about pit bulls. Give me that soldier!". She was one of the two best dogs I've ever met and she had a heart of gold. They're terriers, with more or less the same characteristics as other terriers. The people who bad mouth them are idiots. Any dog, like any person, can be dangerous under the wrong circumstances.

I had a pitbull type (most accurately a Bully XL) since he was a puppy. He was never abused, always loved, regularly exercised and trained. I used to defend pitbulls and claim it is not the dog, it's the owner. But... No matter how much training and excercise I gave my dog, no matter how much a leader I was to him, no matter how obedient he was... Little by little since he was a puppy he started showing agression towards other animals, this agression escalated and no amount of professional training could erase this primal instinct. I am sure some pitbulls are just not like that, but I can tell by experience: they absolutely CAN become unpredictable in a given situation and most importantly, when they lock on a Target and they decide that's what they want .... No training on obedience will suffice, sometimes their Natural drive is just TOO strong. I believe they are probably the most beautiful dog I can think of... But I would never ever have another one... You really can't trust them 100%, there are moments they just lock in on a Target and when that happens you lose control. I loved my pitbull but in the end, the anxiety that he caused me when he saw another animal (and a couple of humans) did it for me. Their lovely face and cute and innocent behavior is AMAZING, but they do go crazy and uncontrollable, it is not worth having a pitbull sorry (I'm saying this as a former pitbull advocate). Statistics don lie, this is not a bad rep hype from the media, the evidence is overwhelming... With pitbulls: EVERYTHING IS PERFECT UNTIL IT IS JUST NOT SO ANYMORE. and yes... I know... you have had your pitbull for years and nothing has happened / it is not breed related it's al about the owner / aggressive dogs are missidentified as pitbulls when they're really not / Chihuahuas are more aggressive and vicious .... Say what you want, a pitbull, even though beautiful, is an unpredictable dog with an ENORMOUS drive with high predatory instinct, it should not be labeled as a nanny/family dog. Let's be real.

And the media has deemed pitbulls demonic for so long that people can't even identify one anymore they just claim everything is a pitbull. Like ANY dog, Pit Bull Terriers will respond to the way they are treated. Treat them harshly and they'll become nervous, harsh and agressive. Treat them well and give them the love, leadersip and security that they desire and they'll be loyal, friendly and sociable dogs. Their "danger" lies in their extraordinary strength and tenacity. They are not the right dog for inexperienced owners, like any large or strong breed.

People that talk about "statistics" lie all the time. Statistics, for starters, aren't there to make an argument. They are numbers. They don't say the "Why", "How", or "Reason". That's what studies are for. But okay, let's play it your way. Statistically speaking, Pitbulls are the single most sought-after dog breed when it comes to illegal dog fights and many of these hounds wind up in rehabilitation centers and shelters. Studies show that no matter how far back you go, training by the owners is the illness upon Pitbulls. He followed me on the trails for a bit, then I heard someone call from far away and he took off running, which put my mind at ease. Mine is the same way. Got her from the pound. She gets scared of loud noises, like if I'm chopping firewood or lifting heavy things or working on something that takes physical effort, she'll go and cower in a corner. I try not to reward that behaviour and I'll stop and call her over and praise her once she's not acting all scared, but she still acts the same way every time. She's a real sweetheart though, every pitbull I've met so far has been as well. Super loyal and very friendly.

Exactly. I remember one time I was walking past a house in my neighborhood and the family's little Weiner Dog ran over and started barking and growling at me as I walked. One of the kids called out, saying, "Don't worry, he doesn't bite!" You want to guess what the dog did next? He clamped down on my shin LOL. Some years ago one morning I stopped at a nearby country cafe for some reason I no longer recall. By the door was an older female Pit Bull. I figured she was waiting for her owner inside having breakfast! Gave her a pet, and went in. She was still there when I left. Later that afternoon I stopped by again and she was still there! I asked the proprietor about her and was told she had just showed up that morning! When I returned to my truck I was unaware she followed me! When I opened the door she shot past me and jumped right in the cab! She decided I was a soft touch and was going home with me! She fit right in at home with everyone, and turned out to be a wonderful addition to the place. Vet said she had probably been used to chase wild hogs as most of her teeth were broken off. Apparently when a hog dog gets too old to keep up she is just left behind to fend for themselves. Wonderful! Glad she chose me! We miss her!

I know people who seen pitbull do horrible things to babies and other dogs are emotionally compelled to be against pitbulls, and their owners are too emotionally attached to see that they're genetically modified to be aggressive. The thing is they're a species that can kill a human easily if they want to, and should be treated as such, nothing more nothing less. Lions and alligators and pythons are also dangerous, but we don't call for their extinction or banning them altogether, but we don't let them be available to literally anyone in a pet store, and be kept in an apartment with children. @@MyDuckSaysFucc yes %100 pit bulls are the most dangerous dog but there is much more context that you need you can’t just look up something and say that’s right when you dive deeper you find that most pit bull attacks aren’t on innocent bystanders rather their used for dog fights, torture, protection of territory (drug dealers) and most pit bulls that do attack bystanders are due to breeder induced trauma probably because most owners of pit bulls don’t go to shelters to adopt them trust me I know puts bulls are dangerous but as someone who adopted a pit from the streets I can tell you they are still just as scared of us I remember when I raised my hand to pet his head he would back away in fear, they attack is because their the most territorial dogs and a big reason why they attack is due to being provoked if you get down to the core of why these attacks happen is almost always the owners fault (p.s taking the idea that pits are always above %50 is a good indicator of misinformation because if that’s a year round estimate then by definition pit bulls are more dangerous than guns yet that’s barley talked about why do you think that is?)

I've had German Shepherd's most of my life. When my last one died after 22 years, I said that I would never get another animal again. The pain of losing a companion was to much, plus dealing with PTSD remembering friends lost, made it worst couple with the way this country treated me, to cover up it's crimes. I trained a guy's bully pit, house broke it. He only wanted her to be a puppy mill, but she wanted to be a companion dog like mine. So she would never mate with any dog, she would attack them. So he abused her, he starved her kept her in a dark she'd... It was bad, I tried to get her from him for three or four months. When I finally did she was in bad shape, all of the effects of his abuse was apparent, malnutrition, separation anxiety, sores, blotchy fur, missing teeth. Now after a month my baby is thriving, it's not the breed, but the owners. Trouble now is I don't know if I can say which dog is the better companion. I love them both, but she is more like a momma bear, follows me everywhere. First dog to sleep in my bed with me, never thought that would happen. But what can you do? I love her, still working on the separation anxiety. We'll get there, I know it.

My pittie uses my mom's pug as a shield when she scared. That and she gets bullied by the little dogs at the dog park. And if he isn't around then she hides behind any pug lol. First time at the dog park a man with his date pretty much looked at Ren and said she is stupid because she's a pit. Told her to sit and she sat. Jokes on him she only listens to men without a bribe assist lol!

Mine is terrified of my mums small (5kg) Lhasa Apso 😂 she nibbles on his mouth, pulls at it, does all sorts to him and he just lays there and lets her 😂😂 She even climbs on top of him. The only thing my Alfie wants to do is play and sleep. Have you noticed the fear on people’s faces when they see you walking down the street though? Like the dog is going to eat them and their dog alive 🤦🏻‍♀️ If only they could see him laying on his back snoring, with my mums dog or with my 3 year old nephew 🤷🏻‍♀️ He’s the best dog, makes us laugh so much because he’s daft - although incredibly smart ❤️

@Kira Zurn Used to be nannies? No breed of dog has ever been bred to take care of another species offspring. There are dog bred to be pointers, herders, hunters, fighting but there are no recognized breeds bred to be nannies. The term nanny dog can be given to any dog, by anyone. Pits account for 65-70% of all fatal dog attacks and account for around 50% of all dog attacks that the victim then needs plastic surgery and there's over 300 breeds of dogs!!!

Anne Hornish a former Connecticut State Rep and the Connecticut senior state director of the Humane Society use to say how dogs were raised. Until her pit bull killed a 95 year old lady. Anne is high up in the Humane Society and use to make laws in Connecticut for the better treatment of animals and her pit killed a 95 year old lady!!! Let that sink in. Hornish also tried to say the dog knocked her down and that killed her, but the dog had actually mutilated the body. Giving the attack the highest a dog can receive a 6/6.

Dogs will act depending on how they are raised and things they experience. All dogs can bite, it’s just that a pit bull’s bite is a bit more dangerous. They shouldn’t be treated differently.

Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Great Danes have a harder bite. A Labradors bite is only 5 PSI lower than a Pitbull and is actually responsible for the second most attacks world wide. Jack Russell's are the worst culprit for attacks. Pitbulls are not even in the top 5. Let's ban Labradors and Jack Russell's.

They are generally good dogs and most are loving and loyal but do you want to take that chance with your little kids? They are still animals and all it takes is a wrong move to startle them and their instincts kick in and then you have a disaster. It isn't something they plan. I agree that Pit Bull attacks primarily are the fault of owners but sometimes its just breeding and instincts that kick in. I guess it depends on your comfort with risk and statistics. Funny, how we never hear about Greyhounds or Collie's or Golden Retrievers attacking and killing family members.

Bully breeds were traditionally known as 'nanny dogs' because they were so good with children. That's why the dog in the Little Rascals was a pitbull. It's only more recently that they were used as fight dogs ( although some of their ancestors were used for bull baiting, etc but again it was the humans that tortured them into being aggressive).

The ‘nanny’ dog myth is anecdotal at best and these breeds were bred for fighting LONG before they were bred as companion dogs. They are cute and adorable and sweet, but SOMETIMES dogs bite. My pit-bull was born into dog fighting and breeding (she’s female). We don’t know the full story of what happened to her, but we do know she was badly abused. She has many scars. But she’s the most sweetest dog ever! She’s super gentle with small kids and small dogs. Super sad that people think these type of dogs are aggressive and deadly. (Sorry for my bad grammar 😬)

Pitbulls only make around 10% of all dog attacks and most pitbull bites aren't fatal because they're short and always go for the legs or arms. The 60% isn't all pitbulls. Most of them are mutts, bullies, and other dog breeds like a Staffordshire bull terrier or boxers because they know people will believe it if they look like a true APBT

The worst problem with a pit bull to me is that they don’t seem to know their own strength sometimes. Especially when they run. My co workers pit bull gave him a black eye when he jumped on his bed when he was sleeping while doing the zoomies. Not to mention their tales, those things are like whips.

Yes and no. I've noticed that pits know their strength compared to other dogs but not when it comes to humans. If they respect the human they think we are stronger and don't mind them being them but in reality they HURT. Idk if that makes sense

Someone killed my pitbull i cried for mounths because i thought he was lost but then they told me that this man killed him and i was furious and went to his house and confronted him i call the cops and i left crying and mad but sad my emotions were like a rollercoaster and still to this day i cry myself to sleep with my other pitbull and i really hope that he is happy in heaven now R.I.P my baby boy
