I tried Nasi Goreng and Sate Ayam for the first time! I'm in Jakarta, Indonesia to sample both of these dishes, which are national favorites here. I specifically sought out Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih, a restaurant near Central Jakarta, to try out their special mutton version, Nasi Goreng Kambing.
During my meal I was joined by two cats and a one-man band, so never a dull moment here in Jakarta.

So apparently Kambing is actually Goat, not sheep, so it was not actually mutton like I thought. Still delicious though!

Well Kambing and Domba (sheep) have the same sound, so people also confused about it lol. Sometimes in Indonesia sate kambing is actually made of mutton but still called sate kambing.

The place you dined in was one of legendary places in Jakarta, so the price is considerably premium. You can find nasi goreng and sate ayam in street vendors with half the price (around 15 - 25k/portion). The taste may vary though.
@DBT1007
@DBT1007 Жыл бұрын
yea. the ingredients itself also premium ones. plus, it's with "legendary" label. they use the goat meat there. not lamb/sheep, it's goat meat. even if it's not legendary, the price should be still expensive. maybe like.. 4$. BUT because it's legendary, it's 7$. the normal nasi goreng maybe like.. around 1$ or Rp15,000. i say "around". the price varies around 15K rupiah tho. some can be 20K IDR, some can be just 10K IDR.

The first plastic from your meal is called pickles, a soured cucumbers and carrots chunks. The second plastic, you might called it melinjo chips (we are indonesians are so crazy with chips 😁), or you might called it "Emping" (Am-pink). Congrats, you already tasted one from so many chips you will find in Indonesia. The drink basically a coconut water. But since it was special, it was a mixed of Coconut water and Orange juice, and the jelly thing (the colourful ones) are the coconut meat (fabricated) while the white one is the real coconut meat, straight from the fruit. For a suggestion on food hunt, you should be hungry..😂😂 Now I'm hungry..😂😂 Bon appetite, Sir..

I think you drank coconut+orange, it's quite common here. so it's coconut but citrus-y. The "chips" is emping. It's made from Melinjo fruit/plantation. It's different from Kerupuk (white, red, all kinds of color). There are hundreds of kinds of Kerupuk based in the main ingredient (Kerupuk kulit, Kerupuk udang, etc), but only one emping.

Hahaha...the custom is as such...whenever a street musician approaches you, either you give em money or the magic hand...they will leave. The nasi goreng you just devoured is just one of the many nasi goreng style. Nasi goreng kambing is also my fave. You should try more nasgor style. And in case you gonna get dishes served with white rice...you should mix everything with the rice, as the rice will counter balance all the flavors. Cus indonesian dishes can be too spicy, too sweet, too salty etc on its own.

did you unintentionally go to that place? or you googled it before you go there? Because that place is actually one of the street food we introduced to visitors who stay at the hotel in Central Jakarta. Whenever my friend from out of town visited Jakarta and he/she happens to stay in Central Jakarta, that nasi Goreng Kebon Sirih place often comes up as their request. That stall probably popular among western backpacker, because it is only walks away from Jalan Jaksa. Jalan Jaksa in Central Jakarta was probably the only place where we can meet foreign backpackers in Jakarta back in 1990s. I dont know whether Jalan Jaksa is still backpacker hotspot or not. 😅

The chips is made from Melinjo nut that only grow out of a tree indigenous to Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, India & Pacific islands called Melinjo tree, and you can eat the young leaf from the same tree, usually the put in a Sour soup called "sayur asem". It's a bit bitter and sour, good as condiments for soup or just the crackers with hot steamed rice and a drizzle of sweet soy sauce. They make snack to from it, by coated it with caramelized sugar. The drink is a mixture of young coconut water and orange juice, and i think they add thinking coconut meat too

hi there, I think you should try chicken satay at the Sabang street named Achmad. they opened at night. it has more creamy peanut sauce and bigger cuts than Kebon Sirih. the taste is amazing, more delicious. and for nasi goreng/fried rice, I recommend nasi goreng kampoeng at cafe named Camden Cikini street. 👍

welcome to the best nasi goreng in the city... usually nasi goreng only cost you like 10k to 30k rupiah (0.75c to 2 USD) but this cost like 3 or 4 times that price... ngl everyone that asked me which nasi goreng that they need to try, is this. Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih

$7 is expensive for only nasi goreng and sate ayam, unless you ordered from big restaurants. It can be for only $2-3 really, $4 maximum. Have a great trip bro, and if you would like to have a lunch or dinner together, I am welcoming so much! ☺ I am nearby.
