A few that helped me up my game A LOT (still a beginner!): - Just queue new villagers to wood. At first, when told to never stop training villagers, it can get a bit overwhelming what to do with all of them. Just put them on wood, stop thinking too much about it, train more, and focus on other things. Need more food? Just grab a lot of them out of the woodline and put them on farms. Instant dozen villagers on food without needing to wait. - Create A LOT of military buildings. I used to just have 1 barracks, 1 archery range, 1 stable. I could never make enough military to defend myself when raided. Wood is easy to get, and you usually float thousands anyway. Instead of making 1 barracks, make 8. You'll be able to make an army instantly. - From feudal onwards, have a few defensive units protecting your villagers. I used to group all my army in a single place when creating them. This meant every time I was atacked they had to run all across the base to defend. By the time they got there the damage was done. By having small groups of Archers/Skirmishers/Spearmen near villagers, I can now stall the raid until reinforcements get there. - Once you have enough villagers (50-60%) of you max population, attack your enemies and NEVER stop making military units. Later in the game, used to just sit on my army and have them idle. Whenever I went to attack, they got killed and that was the end of it. So I had to train a whole new army back home before attacking again. This just gives your opponent a chance to recover. Instead, continously make new units, and set the gather points at the enemy base. You have a lot of resources by this point, so the units that get killed are instantly replaced by new units. (Excercise good unit selection too, of course!)

Damn I remember when I was a kid and playing AoE2(original) was so hard, I could'nt even finish any campaign besides William Wallace. So when Age of Mythology released, I loved the game, cause it was way more easy than AoE2. But now after a good amount of years, I finally understand why so many players got stuck with AoE2, this game was made in a time when games were not supposed to be easy or for everyone, it was supposed to be unique.

I really wouldn't consider AoM to be an easier game. The only "simplification" it did is that town centers can only be placed to dedicated spots, otherwise it's still very much the same game mechanically. AoE2 just has more content and better aged visuals.

@@noodleknight7924 In my experience, it is easier, at least the campaign, like I said, I could'nt even finish any campaign besides William Wallace in AoE2, but I finished the whole AoM when I was young. Some mechanically that make AoM easier: infinite farms, no dodging arrows, counter units are not so OP and siege units are not so great when we have mythological units. Cause I was stupid and I liked to create just one type of unit, for example, an army of Myrmidons. And I was not so coordenate, so I found myself frustrated a lot of times when in AoE2 my whole army died against a mangonel and sometimes by my own mangonel 😢

Now if he's done one armor upgrade and got only one single armor more he'll take only 3 damage per hit instead of 4 which means he'll survive 5 more hits. 8. Don't be shy about making lots of extra production buildings! I can't tell you how long I spent playing AoE with exactly one of each kind of building, or maybe two or three if I was really trying to ramp up production. If you're sitting on thousands and thousands of wood and you're trying to produce units out of a single building, it's often worth it to make like ten of that building so you can mass up your units a lot faster. 9. Keep an eye on how many resources you have. Resources in the bank are resources that you're not reinvesting into your empire, so unless you're saving for something it's usually hurting you if you're floating massive amounts of resources. Keeping an eye on your resource totals will also give you an early warning if your economy is unbalanced and you might want to shift villagers to a different resource, sell some resources at the market, etc. It took me way too long to figure this out!

Here's a small tip for new players. Playing as Britons is really easy to start with... sure there are other civs that are beginner friendly too, but damn do I recommend Britons. Back in the day I used to play AoE2 with my brother and mom. She hardly knew anything BUT Britons and may I add she always wrecked me or my older brother whenever we went for a attack... Not knowing what units/upgrades to go when against those pesky Longbowmen could make your day really shitty. And yes even though my mom used to hate playing against each other, she non than less always won having literally the basic knowledge of the game. Experienced players must be shaking their heads right now, but try to go back when you started playing and had no idea about some mechanics. Now imagine Longbowmen behind a wall... I hope you see the beginner's struggle right there :^)

@@k0pera When you talk about it, I used to play tons of water maps with my brother or mom, or with friends since none of us were playing it competetively. My mom especially loved to make defences alongside the coasts that even germans from ww2 would be jealous. I guess nowdays most of people play competetively whatever they get their hands on... when I think about it... tons of people don't know how to NOT play competetively. Even game like Oldschool Runescape is nowdays only about being the most efficient, having the right gear for right situation and always do something instead of freely exploring the game. Same goes with AoE or even Age of Mythology. When I decided to play some games via Gameranger every single game there was this one guy that talked shit, went the easiest and strongest race/god, always tried rushing the unexperienced players and when I for fun searched "Age of Mythology what is the most op god" the first thing that I found was a forum where a comment from 2004 said it the best "what's the point of bringing up the talk about OPness?" only confirming my feeling of people not playing casualy anymore. What's the point I'm trying to make? Well... there is none, just remembering when people I knew including me used to have fun whilst playing games like AoE or Runescape.

Tips some people apparently learned: •Don't build villagers after dark age. •Pigs are scary and much stronger than wolves. Avoid at all costs. •Fast feudal into defensive militia is an excellent strategy. Make sure to build like 8 of them and get supplies afterwards. People who go up with over 15 villagers are doing it wrong. •Build houses when you reach the pop cap. When you do, stop what you're doing and send like 10 villagers to build about 60 of them. Don't wall with houses though. You need nice efficient street layouts for a walkable city. •Castles are important. Build like 6 of them in your town by buying stone from the market. They should have overlapping fields of fire but not enough to hit units attacking the other castle. In melee. Wouldn't want to friendly fire on the defenders. •Spears and skirms are top tier raiding units. •you need like 30 villagers to make a castle in your base. Don't risk it though if the castle is on the other side of the map. Castle drops need like, 1 or 2 villagers max. •Dark age villagers are only 50 food. Some of them may die but that's a sacrifice you're willing to make. •Walls are an alternative to building an army. Slap down a full palisade on Arabia and nobody will be able to bother you. •Docks are for maps like islands or migration. You don't need to dock if your opponent is on the same landmass. Fishing ships are 50% more resources than a villager for a strictly worse economic unit. •Techs are really useful. You should get every tech as soon as you have the resources. Don't read what they do. There are too many for that.

The new queue system is Definitive Edition exclusive. In any other version, you could only queue where your units moved (i.e. early scout around the TC) and nothing else. So no worries, you weren't missing out!

3. Scout your map: there is a unique button for your first explorer to do this automatically. You may also want to use 6. Command Queuing for this. 4. Don't feel overwhelmed: be the goat in the middle of the battle. And forget about William Wallace a go for The Art of War.

great video... it will make the first steps easier, thank you. what do you think is the best point to start playing multiplayer?

6. Command queuing made my game a lot easier. I didn't know this feature existed.

Its crazy that the ad before this video used AoE2 assets and didn't pay a dime for it

The TC and idle villager hotkeys are automatically put on mouse with 2 or more buttons
@daanwilmer4 жыл бұрын
Need more vills? The default town center hotkey is 'H' and the default create villager hotkey is 'a'. Just type 'hahahahahaha' and you're queueing up six new villagers ('haaaaaa' works as well, but for a single town center).

It's just so hard to get to the game when you start late. A lot of practice it's like learning a entire new skill ...

Not gonna lie. In 2000 when i first got Aok and was playing on Zone.com in the Custom Scenario Rooms there was no KZbin and no strat videos. All that existed then were websites and forums, 56k and cable modems. Cant believe there are so many ppl still playing this game, myself included. Never played a game quite like aoe

Could have mentioned that the longer the tradeline, the better, but apart from that a very nice point to start at :)

The game looks good. It reminds me of age of mythology now which I think is a very good thing. Since aom died and aoe3 isn't my thing this might just be what i'm looking for. Helpful vid.

Anyone who played as a kid, on release, 10 years ago, or even yesterday should buy this game. It's unbelievably good. It's an upgrade in every way. Guaranteed dozens and dozens more hours with AoE2 yet again in my life 😂

20 gigs for the UHD pack what a joke another 1 hour wasted because they decided not to allow us to preload the graphics enhancement packs.

this 60 percent pop being vill is a new thing, i never needed that many in the past, 9 for each resource, and then once all gold and stone are gone, kill them off, you have enough to finish the game by then

I've heard of FPS dips and stuttering, especially in combat, and general performance is kind of a issue at launch. I currently only have a 1050 ti and an i5 8400, will it be a mess to play? I meet rec requirements, but again, performance issues.

Just don't activate the UHD graphics and you'll be ok

I have an i5 6600k and a 970ti and I pass the benchmark UHD graphics on a 2k monitor for multiplayer ranked. You should be fine using UHD graphics.

i have an i5-7300HQ and a gtx 1050 Ti, i ran it smoothly on the highest graphics (no UHD tho as i'm still using the 1080p), but make sure vsync is UNchecked ! Beware, it consumes a lot of ram ! my first game took nearly 8Gb in a 1VS1 game !

Coming from StarCraft, the only thing that bothers me is how to make production working. But I guess it's just the matter of remapping "select all X" buildings to easily accessible hotkeys...

Doesn't trading only work with teammates or can I actually send the trade carts to my own or enemy marketplaces?
