Great video Roger. We really suffer with water hammer. It doesn't always happen when valves are open and closed though it can happen at random times of the day and night with nothing on. We have to have the mains pressure turned right down to prevent it happening. Seems to mainly happen in the pipe coming from the stop cock in our cloakroom. Could I fit a water hammer arrester just after the stop cock to help prevent this? Would be nice to have a better mains pressure. By the way we have no gas boiler in the property as we have a multi fuel stove with back boiler. Thanks again Roger 👍🏻👍🏻

You really know your stuff! I have a toilet that makes a sound like the foghorn on the Titanic! The whole house resonates, and it carries on, with varying pitch, until the cistern is full. It makes sense to me now after watching you explain what is happening - the entire system is resonating to the vibrating ball, or faulty valve. As you showed it needs a shock absorber, or damper, the same way a car suspension has to absorb the vibration. Failing that, it will get replaced, as it did not always do it. I last replaced it around 10 years back! Will be looking into the solutions you gave, thanks! The other problem is that I am in a semi that is fed from a common supply. This was often done in very old houses, to save time and money. So, my neighbour had ceramic taps fitted (am guessing here) and each time they are shut off, a resounding 'bang' goes through the pipe. I shall fit one of those 'T' devices to take the sting out of it.

Roger is on the money yet again. Water hammer from the washing machine when after water is stopped abruptley then the feed back noise and bang in the pipes. For £20 I brought Sioux Chief Appliance Water Hammer Arrester - 3/4in . turn the water off, unscrew the connect at the inlet to the washing machine, screw on the arrester, connect the water inlet pipe all done in less than fifteen minutes. Job done no more noise. Ps the cup attached below the water refgarding the ball bounce, job done.

The only nuisance noise issues I've had with radiators is when the little plastic stand-offs along the brackets have been missing, causing the radiator to tick or clang when heating up/ cooling down. They're not usually present at all on older systems, most of which are also piped entirely in copper, so the effect is much more pronounced! Incidentally, my parents still have an old Potterton Netaheat 16-22 Electronic which had begun kettling not long after it's usual service. The engineer solved the issue pretty much within minutes of application of F2 Superconcentrate straight into the towel rad.

Noisy plumbing? From time to time there was a low-pitched humming from the pipework particularly when running water. Turned out to be a faulty ballcock in the cold water cistern. The rubber diaphragm was perished and disintegrating. I am surprised that the ballcock nevertheless worked! The more usual fault with these is a pit wearing in the rubber and the cistern overflowing. Could have cleaned up the old ballcock and replaced the rubber bit but given the difficulty of operating in situ, replaced the whole thing. Great advice! Keep up the good work!

We get a loud vibration on the system when we use either of two of the hot water taps closest to the boiler (oil), it starts as a hum but quickly builds up to very loud banging vibrations like it's being reinforced by resonance. It can be reset to start over by adjusting the flow rate on the tap and is better at faster flow rates but that can make the water too cool. I'm thinking maybe a particular length of pipe that they share that's not well mounted and that resonates to the flow rate somehow?

Hello Roger, thank you for that advice and excellent presentation! I never knew these noise arresters existed until watching it. So, a follow up to my comment of a week ago: I fitted a AA size MiniRester from SiouxChief - must admit, I was sceptical of it working, but, it has cured the toilet cistern noise and none of my house taps make a 'bang' anymore. So it was well worth the time and effort, and only £20 in parts. Time will tell if it cures the common supply noise problem, but it's looking good so far.

25:37 - I have this creaking in my house, it drives me mad. Strange thing is, it only started happening after we had a new boiler fitted. When it started happening I got the plumber back round and he said the same thing as Roger, pipes crammed into a narrow space in the joists. I just don't know why it was never a problem until the new boiler was fitted, you'd think it would have been a problem since day one.

Very solid Vid, Roger for which many thanks. Could you give a bit of insight to the problem of pumping over. I had to go fully pumped when I had a new boiler but wanted to retain the hot tank, etc so the system is still vented. (3 Zones). Anyway as soon as the system went live it would pump over with a horrible noise, every few days, driving us mad. The Plumber just scratched his head and ultimately wouldn't come back. So I researched it myself and understand that the minimum height of the top of the Vent pipe from the surface of the header tank water level is 450mm, mine being 110mm, unaltered from the old system. I am getting this done ASAP to go to 500mm, which is the limit of the roof. The extra length being necessary due to the modern pumps being more powerful to handle the extra load and the surges caused by the electrical valves, opening and closing. I'm not expecting an answer to my specific problems but an explanation of the principles and practicalities, would be very much appreciated!

After living in the same property for twenty-five years my plumbing developed a noise that started a few minutes after someone had taken a long shower and would continue for the next fifteen minutes or so, with the noise echoing throughout the house. It was obviously something to do with the hot water as cold water use didn't cause the problem and when it eventually stopped it stopped in a stutter like the ball cock valve does. Eventually I went up in the loft and identified that the noise was coming from the water tank which was sealed with a firmly fitting lid. The noise didn't seem to sound that loud in the loft, but nevertheless resonated throughout the house. I lifted the lid and it stopped immediately. I thought it was a build up over time, and probably the water tank water reaching a level that made the noise, but after a few days it came back. In the end I inserted some Sintered Bronze Pneumatic Air Silencer Mufflers, fist two small 1/8 inch ones, that didn't make any difference, but later a 1 inch one which seem to solve the problem. I am not sure is that is what Pneumatic Air Silencer Mufflers are intended for, but I wanted something that would release the air pressure but not let any dust in and they seem to be the right. Strange how it started after so many years.

All of a sudden when I flush the loo, or open the hot water tap in the bathroom, there is a knocking sound coming from the kitchen sink mixer tap, and it starts dripping. Great video as always! Question for you regarding water hammer arrestors - how do you size them for the job? Ever since I replaced a broken zone valve (just to motorised part, the brass was fine) I get an impressive shockwave back to the pump when the valve closes. Makes a right bang that thuds the pipework around it and I'm sure it's the cause of the zone valve breaking in the first place. Can't be doing the pump any good either. The pipework from the pump to the zone valve is 28mm.
@SkillBuilder4 жыл бұрын
Is the zone valve the right way around. Look at the arrow on the side. The bang happens when it is fitted back to front.
@muppet_magnet4 жыл бұрын
@@SkillBuilder Thanks for replying Roger. Unfortunately the valve body doesn't have any direction markings. I may have misled slightly saying it's a zone valve when it's actually sold as a 2-port motorised valve (Drayton 27205SX, Screwfix part no.2488R), wired as a 5-wire. The writing on the motor/actuator is the right way up if that helps visualise it - it's mounted vertically and controls the flow of hot water to my hot water tank. The previous motor/actuator that I replaced had a broken spring mount internally which meant the valve never closed! Every time the central heating was on a share of the hot water was going to the hot water tank also. This was bad for efficiency sake but what was worse was that the water in the hot water tank was getting to over 80c as the water is being heated by a wood burner biomass boiler, which you can't just switch off like a conventional boiler. The over temperature cut-out in the water tank tripped but this only disables the oil fired boiler which I wasn't using at the time. Scary stuff! The broken motor/actuator was like this when we moved in to the house a year ago.

Hi Roger. I have a question but first Thank you for all the videos you post as they always provide clear and easy to understand guidance. My question is this. We have a back boiler currently and on the wall next to the digital controller there are two boxes with the branding heatsavers on the front of them. One is a extra heat unit and the other is a relay. Not sure what either one does if anything? But a couple of times a day one of them makes a terrible winding noise that appears to be lasting longer and longer lol. Have you ever come across anything like this?

It sounds like it might be booster pumps in the plant room. Larger blocks of flats often have tanks in a plant room that is then pumped up to the all the floors so it sounds like that is what you are hearing.

Hi Roger great videos! I was so sure you were going to cover our noise as it seemed very close to your kettling examples! We have an issue where by if my son doesn’t have his bath of an evening, the supply header tank in the loft kettles the next morning when the gas boiler kicks in to top up the cylinder temperature. If my son uses the hot water each night this issue is never a problem when boiler next fires up. Do you have any suggestions as to why this would happen please?
@SkillBuilder5 ай бұрын
Hi Stonboy O.K that is an interesting question. What we know is that the cylinder is full of hot water that has cooled overnight. hi When the boiler kicks in the circulation through the boiler to the cylinder is not good and some hot water goes up the vent pipe. You sometimes get a reverse circulation from the cylinder back to the boiler overnight. This happens on gravity systems where the primary circuit isn't pumped. Does the cylinder have a motorised valve or is it on gravity circulation from the boiler below.? t How much distance is there between the top of the boiler and the cylinder? Is the water travelling the right way through the boiler? I have seen pumps put on the wrong way round. Finally it could simply be that the boiler has scaled up and the scale is creating hot spots. You would here some banging and popping in the boiler. You can audd boiler descalent through the header tank and give the system a week to clean out before draining it and refilling.

Roger - what about the "turkey" glugging noise under sink as the basin drains? We have a sink which does this and always has even though we have had a complete bathroom refit! New sink and re-plumbed and all. One thing to note here is that there is also an adjoining sink on the other side of the wall in a spare bedroom and the waste is interconnected.

Hi Charles I meant to cover that problem in the video. You can fit an anti vac trap to one of the basins to cure it. www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-anti-syphon-bottle-trap-white-32mm/37314

@@SkillBuilder very kind of you to come back to me so quickly... I am now beginning to believe that you are not really a plumber at all - you are getting a reputation of being reliable! 😂😆🤣🧺

I find water to be a really fascinating topic. Water is all around us. From the soil, from the air, from the pipes we put into our homes, our showers, toilets, etc. I am not a plumber. But I have found an incredible number of problems with structures that I have had to (try) to fix are from other people not understand water and doing something wrong.

Hi, thanks for the video. A lot of good info. Can the gas valve being set too high contribute or cause kettling?

Yes, absolutely

When bleeding a radiator should be done with the heating off or on?
@SkillBuilder4 жыл бұрын
I would say do it when the heating is off. The only reason being that the water will be hot and if you don't manage to get the screw back in and something goes wrong you will handle it better with cold water.

Could water hammer eventually lead to failure in any joints in the home or is that shock unlikely to lead to that?

Yes water hammer can damage fittings

Rodger, another great video. Hoping you might explain this nose we are getting in the bathroom. Back in August we upgraded to a combi boiler, we used to have cold water and hot water tanks in the attic. It is a viessman boiler that we decided to have installed in the attic and it has been great having mains pressured hot water, however when ever we flush the toilet you would think you were standing next to Niagara falls. This is the only place we hear this noise, there is no additional noises from opening any taps or when the radiators are on. Is this just because the toilet is now get mains cold water rather than being fed cold water from the tank in the attic? Thank you for your help and looking forward to your next video.

can you send a picture of the inside of the w,c cistern
@KendalSmithy4 жыл бұрын
Toilet cisterns should always be supplied by the mains and it's unlikely that yours was ever supplied by the header tank in the attic, so it's probably coincidence that the inlet valve has worn at the same time as you had the new boiler installed. Either way you should probably get a new inlet valve installed or at least replace its washer or diaphragm, depending on what type of valve it is.

Interesting video. I'm interested in noisy running water from taps. Heard my neighbours in the garden saying what's that noise 🤣

Found this useful, however, didn't cover my issue which is cold radiators (got hot water & radiators been bled) but no heating and a constant tapping noise which sounds as if it's coming from either the hot water tank or the pump housing. Can you help please?

We have an unvented central heating system with a Viessman boiler and Kingspan hot water cylinder. When we turn on any hot tap in the house (upstairs and downstairs) we get a loud knocking in the pipe work - sounds close to where the hot water leaves the hot water cylinder. Plumbers have changed valves (although these are on the cold water input). Latest valve change saw things fixed for a day or so but we are now back to square one and our plumber is out of ideas…….any suggestions? Hot water cylinder has an expansion tank above…..not sure if this could be relevant???

Roger, a question: a new boiler, installed less than six months ago, is making a resonant sound that vibrates through the exhaust pipe. It last 30-60 seconds when the boiler is at its lowest power (26 BTU). The vendor is saying that this is due to insufficient gas pressure that the utility company is delivering. He measures 7” wc, but says that the boiler requires 11”. The gas company says that 7” is the maximum allowed by city code. The vendor later clarified that gas pressure drops by 3” wc drop upon startup. He is suggesting 11” wc to keep the minimum pressure above 7” in, which he says is necessary due to a negative pressure value that requires a minimum volume. Does this sound right to you? Are there other explanations?

You need to measure the gas pressure but also the flow rate of the gas. If the supply pipe to the boiler is too small that will cause that pressure drop.
