I have searched high and low on KZbin to find information that might help me find the cause of a clunking sound you so accurately described in #6 in your plumbing noise causes. Every time I turned on a faucet in my home there was an immediate clunk sound in the water pipes. After finding your post I replaced the pressure balance valve as you recommended on my shower valve and the clucking sound was gone! HALLELUJAH!! I wanted to " THANK YOU" for sharing your experience and knowledge with us out here that are far less informed on these matters. Thanks again!

There's many cases where some factory miles away caused this sound. There's a famous case of some tire or glass factory in in the north east had a machine that caused an entire town to have a hum and they only found out 25 years later, the day the plant shut down. Turning your master breaker off is a good start things like refrigerators have humming compressors.

Hey... so my kitchen sink sprayer(separate), was really lacking in power so, I changed it out with original part. Handle and hose unit from the company. So, the pressure is marginally better but now it has that sound that I found out is called hammer. So, I've seen a video that says to shut off the water in the basement, drain the water from top to bottom, then close up the taps and turn the water back on. Before I do this, does this sound like the right thing to try? Thanks

We have a noise like someone pushing a heavy dresser across the floor or a large air compressor sound in our house at random times (sometimes goes days or weeks without hearing it, today I heard it 4 times in a few hours). It comes when there is no water running, the furnace isn't on, or anything else being used. The sound seems loudest on the main level in the living room by the garage. It is decently loud (like an air compressor in another room) and it makes a rumble vibration on the floor. It is not near our water heater, air conditioner, or furnace. It is somewhat close to the water supply turn off. I am at a loss for how to investigate a random sound that seems to have nothing running or plugged in or in use when it occurs! and since it's so random, I can't even get a recording! Is there a possible water line issue that would make noise even when no water is being used? This noise has been noticed off and on for about a year now, and I think it seems to be happening more often. Would love to get some guidance on where to start looking!!!

I have a rotational sawing type noise next to water heater. That expansion tank is within 2ft of noise?
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 4 ай бұрын
@@jasweett the way to check the expansion tank is to see if the bladder has gone bad. Disconnect it from the water line after you relieve the pressure. The best way to relieve the pressure is to turn off the supply line from the water heater and open a faucet until the water stops flowing. Turn the faucet off. ( The expansion tank should have been installed between the shut off valve and the water heater on the cold supply side.) If installed somewhere else, you need to shut off the water supply to the house, open a hot water faucet to drain the pressure down and then close it. When you take the tank off, if it’s really really heavy, the bladder has gone bad and the expansion tank needs to be replaced. If it feels light and empty of water, the tank is still good. It probably is the expansion tank making the noise. I don’t know if you have any other equipment around the water heater that could be making that noise.

During a bathroom remodel, our other bathroom shower started to make a banging noise coming from inside the wall where the shower valve is. It only happens if we have the valve set to both cold & hot (to make it warm). If we turn it all the way to hot or cold, it stops. My thought was, as the contractors were turning off & on the main water valve to work on the other bathroom, they turned on the water to quick and it ruptured something in the valve. They said it's just air in the pipes and it will go away the more we use the other shower, but I think the valve got messed up. Thoughts?

TheAKK, if you have an RO system you could have a hole in the storage tank bladder. That can make a humming sound. If you have an expansion tank on the water heater or a well tank, those bladders can go bad and make a noise. If you have a pressure regulator on the house, they make noise when they go bad. If you have a boiler system, they also have expansion tanks. That could make a noise if heating your water. I don’t think it could be the faucets if you’re getting the noise both upstairs and downstairs.

@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 3 ай бұрын
@@ryanmayo4750 check your water pressure on the drain at the bottom of your water heater. After you install the pressure gauge, turn your gas as high as it will go and see if the temperature gauge climbs. If it climbs, you might have thermo expansion and you need to add an expansion tank on the cold inlet side of your water heater. If you have an electric water heater, you won’t get thermo expansion but it’s a good place to check the water pressure on your water system. If you have a well, you shouldn’t have high water pressure. If you have city water, you can get high water pressure, that’s why you have a pressure regulator. Pressure regulators have about a ten year life. Check this out and also recheck your hose bib to make sure that new washer is tight.

@TheGrumpyPlumber

First thing you need to do is check your water pressure. The best place to check it is at the water heater drain. Make sure the burner is not running when you check it. Turn a faucet on for about 3 seconds and then turn back off. Read the pressure on the gauge. Good pressure is between 50 to 62 lbs. Next thing I want you to do is turn the burner on the water heater up as high as it goes. Watch and see if the thermostat climbs above 100 lbs. If that happens, you need to install an expansion tank on the cold water inlet side of the heater. Thermo expansion can cause problems. This info is only if you have a gas heater. If you have an electric heater, the pressure gauge will tell you the house pressure only. You don’t get thermo expansion on an electric heater. The high pressure might be causing the whistling sound. You can buy a pressure gauge that has two dials on it. One side shows the house pressure and the red dial will show how high the pressure can increase. If the house pressure creeps up slowly, and someone opens a faucet, the second gauge will stay at the high pressure while the first one will drop down to normal pressure. That would show that you have a bad pressure regulator and not thermo expansion. Replace the regulator. The problem is not the water heater. It’s either thermo expansion or the regulator. Hope this helps.

@@lorasteger6205 you have a submersible well, correct? That means the pump is hanging on a pipe inside the well casing. At the bottom of the pipe, just before the pump, there is normally a check valve. That valve could be leaking slowly and draining the water out of the pipe. So when the well pump comes on, it pushes the air out first before you get water. That could be one issue to check. Have you heard of wells drying up or having the water level drop in your area? Do you have a galvanized tank or a bladder tank? I hope you have a bladder tank but they can go bad. Easy way to check…..you can grab the tank and shake/ move it. If it doesn’t move and it feels real heavy, that indicates that the bladder has ruptured. Even though the bladder tanks can be quite large, there is very little water in them. That’s why it’s easy to move. Does the oxidation system have an air vent on it? It might be releasing water. I think the problem is in the well. Check these out.

@seangholipour3884, first thing you should do is turn off the toilet angle stops and the hot and cold angle stops on the lav faucets. Then turn the faucet on and off quickly at the tub and see if that stops the noise. If the noise stops, turn one angle stop one at a time and then turn the tub faucet on and off and see which angle stop is bad. If that’s not the problem, then it could be the pressure balance shower valve that needs to be repaired. It could be a bad balancing spool in the shower cartridge that could be bad.

Roger Lampton, you’re having a problem with the diverter for the hand sprayer. You have to remove the spout to find the diverter which is located in the body of the valve. If this is a $100 faucet, it’s not worth repairing and you probably can’t find the part. If it’s a Delta or a Moen, you can get the part. If it’s a very expensive high end kitchen faucet, you can also get the part by calling the manufacturer.

It’s probably the bladder in the water tank that is going bad. They can make any kind of sound when they go bad. If there is a snifter valve on top of the water tank, push the needle down and if air and water come out together, it means the bladder is going bad. You could have a bad RO tank. If you can lift the tank easily, then it’s fine but if it is very heavy to lift, then the tank has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Another thing….if the RO drain is connected between the basket strainer and the p- trap, it makes a water running noise. The easiest way to fix that is to connect the drain on the outlet arm of the p- trap. The water in the p-trap will silence the noise. You hear that noise when the RO is making drinking water.

That must be a water line rattling. It probably wasn’t anchored properly. It can be repaired, but it will be a lot of work and costly. If you have a compression angle stop, turn the volume down. The toilet might fill slower but that might stop the rattling. Replace the fill valve on the toilet and see if that helps. Another thought; if you have a compression angle stop, tightly close it and then reopen it. That could reset the faucet washer in the valve.

At times, plumbing in one washroom will squeal loudly (like a smoke alarm). This will happen only sometimes when water is running somewhere in the house. Originally sound was coming from one faucet when water turned on anywhere in house. Had cartridge changed and a few other things on that faucet (by a plumber). It still makes the sound (at times)...now I noticed the sound comes from the toilet area of the same washroom! I don't hear it from the faucet lately, just the toilet (at times). Is something moving through the pipe and stuck? I live in an area with hard water. When plumber changed cartridge, he also changed water pressure regulator valve as it had build up and might have had a slight leak. Thank you for your helpful videos and advice.

Mimi Combow, turn the shut off valve on the toilet off and see if the sound goes away. Try this for about a day. If the sound stops, it’s either the fill valve or the shut off valve to the toilet making the sound. If that’s not it, do the same on the lav faucet and see if the noise is gone. Angle stops are notorious for making noise but are seldom checked. If you have the older style compression angle stops that you have to turn off, there is a washer in them that can get loose and make a noise. I’m thinking it’s the fill valve on the toilet.

I don't feel any vibration at all in the pipes and they are well secured. I can't tell if the sound is coming from the pressure regulator or the meter. I know there is a spring in the pressure regulator, I imagine it could be this moving in and out. Again, no vibration at all in the pipes. I changed the regulator about 2 years ago. The psi had been 115, its now 52. Any thoughts or concerns? Thank you!

I think the noise is coming from the regulator. I would upgrade the regulator to a 600 Wilkins.

Hi Thanks for the video. In my home I am getting roaring, vibrating noise when I open any single tap and it immediately stops when I open another one. any idea what it might be related. thanks

@testt4548, first thing I would do is turn off the angle stops to find out what fixture is making the noise. I could almost guarantee that it’s a washer in an angle stop that is causing the noise.

We have city water sir and noticed low pressure from our bathroom faucet(cleaned the aerator) and thought we fixed the problem. Then the washing machine valve quit having water come out on the cold side the same day. And now the bathroom faucet won’t have water more than drips coming out. Any ideas on where to begin looking or what to troubleshoot? Thanks

There are screens on the hose or washing machine connections that need to be cleaned or changed. Clean the faucet aerator again and it will probably work. If you turn the water off to the house or any valve connected to the house, turn the valves back on slowly.

I have been hearing a noise for about 2 seconds it comes and goes sometimes it won't happen for 2 days and then out of nowhere it will happen.. it sounds like a someone turned the water on and turns off it's coming from under the house which is an older home, from the pipes under the house what could be the problem??? And when it happens no water is running in the house..

Do you have a well tank or a pressure regulator? The noise might be coming from one of those. I need more information please.

The pressure in Almost every faucet including showers, and even when toilets refill “pulsates” sometimes so hard it makes a knocking noise. It seems to originate around where the pressure reduction valve is. Any ideas? Thank you!

Sounds like you have a bad pressure regulator. Check that out first. You could have a bad pressure balance shower valve cartridge that could make a noise when using water somewhere else.

I hear loud "water flow" noise stemming from the main input water shut-off valve, traveling to my washer hose, and water heater, nearest the main valve... however, when the main valve is shut off the water flow noise stops. No leaks in the house... no water hammer (I know that sound). No videos on YT addresses this issue. What say you, sir?
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber 2 жыл бұрын
@lol_05.76, turn the water supply off to the water heater and see if the noise goes away. If it does, you might have a leak at an underground water pipe if the plumbing is in the concrete. Check your toilet tanks and see if water is flowing over and into the overflow tube. If so, you need to replace the fill valve. Turn the water off to the whole house, wait about a half hour, and check all the toilet tanks and see if the one or more tanks are empty. Replace the flush valve or flapper if that is the case. Check to see if you have an RP device for the irrigation as that might need to be repaired or replaced. Also check the T&P valve on the water heater. I say you check these things out.

I started hearing a leaking constant water noise coming from the shower handle, what is that?

You probably need to replace the cartridge in the shower valve.

Hi, I bought this house about 4 years ago. There are 3 showers in the house all have Kohler valves and there about 20 years old. About a month ago the shower (Only) on the second floor started to have s shrill whistle occasionally. Speaking with Kohler they recommended changing the 2 piece pressure vulve and the control valve. After I did that a few hours later the whistle was back, it lasts for about 30 to 45 seconds. Suggestions?
@TheGrumpyPlumber
@TheGrumpyPlumber Жыл бұрын
Is there an expansion tank on the water heater, RO system, or bladder type well tank? When the tank goes bad, they can make that shrill noise. If you have a hot water heating system, it could be the expansion tank on the boiler. It could also be the fill valve on the toilet. It doesn’t happen when the shower is running so it’s not the shower valves making the noise.

Thank You. I’ll replace the toilet valve and see if that stops the whistle. We do not have an expansion tank on the hot water or a well tank. City water.

Glad I helped. The next time don’t buy a Kohler fill valve because it’s a Fluid Master fill valve, costing less than $10 at Home Depot. Fluid Master is the flip valve a lot of toilet manufacturers use.

@@TheGrumpyPlumberFunny you say that I bought the kohler fill valve at home depot, the kohler came in a nice box for double the money. When I opened the box to replace the valve it was stamped kohler on top and then on the shut off it was stamped Fluid Master. Thanks Again for your advise and experience!!!

The top line on my water heater is vibrating looks to be the cold it just started doing it this evening. Also the shower sometimes makes a vibrating noise. Usually it will stop when I turn the valve. I’m not running any water at the moment anywhere in the house and the line on top of the water heater is still vibrating. Thanks for your help

You probably have pressure balance tub/ shower valves in your house and one of the cartridges is bad. There is a small spring and ball bearing in the cartridge. You need to replace the whole cartridge. P.S. If you have a few in your house, I recommend you repair all of them.
