Hello, Stumpy! There are plenty of ‘woodworking’ vids…but none that compare with the quality and diversity of your offerings. I enjoy them immensely, have learned much, and become a much better woodworker as a result of integrating both your shop tips and tool recommendations. You are the ‘go to’ guy in the woodworking video biz…I would think tool manufacturers would be breaking down your door to get your reviews and endorsements. Thank you! Stumpy, I was in my new shop a few days ago organizing my routing equipment. I cannot tell you where or which router I got it from, but I ran across the shaft and cone for the centering tool. They were buried on the bottom of one of my router tool bags so of course, I studied each of the pieces for quite a while trying to figure out what they were for. Now I know thanks to cool tools. I enjoy all of the content you post and I have learned many new skills and ideas from Stumpy Nubs. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the table saw review. As soon as you said it has the best dust collection and knowing you have a SawStop got me interested.
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure I said it was the "best" dust collection, just that it is as good at collecting dust as any saw I have used. Yes, that does include my SawStop. SawStop claims something like 98% collection, but that must be with the perfect dust collection setup in a controlled test. Because I always have to vacuum after using my SawStop, and every several months we have to clean a pile of dust out of the cabinet. I think the Harvey is similar to the SawStop when it comes to dust collection. Good, but not near perfect :)

@11:33 For most everybody who watches these videos, let me tell you, the best, and most useful, and affordable in this video _by far_ is the restorer and the one that you will use over and over. It beats the hell out of a belt sander or even palm sanders, grinder sanders, etc. The best part is they are cheap, sorta. Or let me say, they're worth every penny. I bought a Porter-Cable at Lowes for 65 bucks. I promise you will _look_ for stuff to do. I was convinced when a customer asked if I could get rid of 20 yrs worth of calcium deposits on a red tiled porch where she (over)watered her plants. Thick, chunky, rock infused with the tile. I had previously tried belt sanders, angle grinder with stainless twisted knot wire brush, all kinds of scrapers , chemicals, even hammer and chisel. But this whipped them all, badly.

Can you do a more in depth video on the Harvey? Maybe compare to your sawstop? Thanks!
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 3 жыл бұрын
I personally like the SawStop rip fence a little better, but that's likely just because I am more used to it. I definitely prefer the Harvey miter gauge over the one that came with my SawStop. I think those two things cancel each other out... The quality of the two saws is very comparable, both in robust size and fit/finish... The SawStop obviously has the added safety feature, which I am a BIG fan of. But for those who feel like they do not need that feature, comparable Harvey models are considerably less expensive.

Hi James, do you know why there is such a large access door for the case of the Harvey tablesaw? It doesn’t appear to be covering anything. Is it just there for additional airflow? My question is can I replace it with a regular door so that I can use the additional space under the saw for routing some dust collection pipe?

Thanks for the recommendation on that table saw. I'm actually new to the craft and saving up for a table saw. While a lot of people have said to just go down to Lowe's and pick up whatever is on sale, my gut has said set the money aside, buy something of quality, with good safety features, accessories you can count on for accuracy, and the kind of craftsmanship that you can count on to stick around for the long haul. This looks like just the thing.

I've had the 2HP 36" version with the more traditional trunions and I can't recommend this brand enough.They actually build cabinet saws for Grizzly, Laguna, Powermatic and Jet. I run it with a full kerf combo blade and it chews through really hard wood without a hitch. One thing though I'd highly recommend: DO NOT buy their mobile base, it's a waste of money! It is a Bora clone with 2 fixed wheels. It barely accommodates a 400lbs machine and will not prevent tilting on the long side if one adds the cast iron right extension or even the cast iron router table. Get a longer base or fabricate your own (metal preferably) if one can passably weld. That's what I did even if my welding is.... very creative, let's say ;-) but it's now on 6 full swivel casters and I enjoy twirling this beast around in my very small shop.

How does the Harvey compare to a similarly priced model of the SawStop? I haven't seen many people use a Harvey. Is it just because of the safety feature of the SawStop, or is there a different reason? Is there a reason to pass on the safety feature of the SawStop in favor of a Harvey?
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 3 жыл бұрын
Harvey has made saws for many years, but they were always branded by others. So, lots of people use them, they just don't know it. In the last few years Harvey has started releasing their own branded machines.... How does it compare to a SawStop? Both are top quality saws in terms of build quality and fit/finish. Both will last a lifetime. SawStop has their flesh-sensing technology, and you pay a premium to get it. If you want quality but don't need that technology, the Harvey provides that at a lower price point.

I never said no shop should be without a SawStop. I am also not saying every shop should have a Harvey. This is "Cool Tools"- it's about seeing what good tools are available. In this case, a Harvey may be a good option for all those folks who want a top quality saw at a significantly lower price point compared to other comparable models. From what a lot of people over the years have said, the Vega brand saw fence is probably one of the best replacement fences.Not cheap, but it is a quality upgrade. The Restorer was pretty cool. I've had to epoxy cracks and gaps on several projects and I've learned a really dependable method to cut down sand times. First, tape off the area with blue tape so that your epoxy pour is going just into the crack and the immediate surface, and not all over your workpiece. Secondly, once the epoxy tacks up (but is not fully cured) you can remove the tape and then take a razor blade or card scraper and shave off the excess epoxy from the surface. Once it cures, you'll be left with just some small spot sanding as opposed to whipping out the belt sander and chewing off a giant pool of hardened epoxy. If sanding is soul crushing work, it's a thousand times worse when you blow through 15 random orbit pads trying to get rid of epoxy with hardness that seems like a diamond.

Did you ever see an Altendorf table saw. A friend of mine has one and it is absolutely a fantastic saw!

Stumpy! Have you seen Jay Bates new sawhorse bench? His video just came out and it has a ton of features, perfect for the handtool woodworker.

I just watched that video. Jay's integration of those dovetail clamps into the sawhorse is pretty slick.

Just curious ... how would you rate the SawStop against the Harvey (aside from the safety features)?

Setting the blade stopping technology aside and comparing similar models, the two are equal in quality, in my opinion. Harvey's miter gauge is far better, though.

I enjoy the contents of your Cool Tool Segments. I saw the part on the Harvey Table saw and I have a question about the Fence. How well does the Fence hold it's back to front postion and is there any flex in the fence when pressure is applied to the back of the fence when it is locked down?

heh "just scratching the surface" nice :D Is there any reason not to use an angle grinder with a flap wheel to remove resin? Too much cross-grain action? I haven't tried, just a random thought.

first thing I noticed about the Harvey table saw is the fence!! Its just like the UNI-Fence which is a fantastic fence! By that I mean the two position aluminum extrusion. They took the newer beismeyer and hybrid it with the OG unifence. I recently acquired a delta unisaw 34-802 with a unifence, I wonder if their fence ( extrusion) is compatible with the unisaw. I hope so and i hope i can buy just the extrusion to update and improve my old fence.
