Great video! Unfortunately, most of us overlook the maintenance when life gets too busy. I had those same roadside triangles and found them to be a little clumsy...got rid of them and bought some led flashers... they look like hockey pucks and u set them out like u explained. Also, a GOOD impact WRENCH that is capable of turning rusted lugs is a must. I have a Dewalt dcf900. Always charge b4 trips. Most impact drivers won't be capable. AND a small lug nut socket set. It should be obvious, but lugs come in different sizes. I do need to get a reflective vest though. Thanks again. It's great that we share our knowledge and stay safe!

Blowouts....The Greatest RV Adventure!!! Just had one on the way home from Florida this winter, at night, when I hit a piece of debris in the middle of a construction zone, with nowhere to pull over for over 5-miles, in the middle of nowhere. Mine is a triple axle, and the center tire on the driver's side blew out. Wish I had heavier leather gloves because those steel belts were wrapped up around everything and even stuck into/punctured the front and back tires...so 1-blowout and 2 slow leaks all at once! When I finally could pull off the highway, the wheel was destroyed and the other two tires were losing air. The next morning, I put the spare on the center, and filled the other two with FLAT-OUT. Luckily the damage was minimal (mostly the wheel shroud and 1 destroyed wheel). Big compressor mounted in the toy hauler used to fill them, and FLATOUT slowed the leaking. I managed to limp it home, driving slow, stopping every ~50-miles for the last 200 miles to top off the front and back tires. Just replaced all 7 wheels & tires with better rims and ALL-STEEL G-Rated 14-ply tires. Hopefully that was a once in a lifetime adventure!!!

sounds like a nightmare but glad to hear you got through it. heres to no more blowouts! 🍻

@@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS no I don’t that was way back in the 90’s when I was younger and working for a cheap ass trucking company believe it or not this is my 41 year driving I’m hoping to semi retire before 60 I’m keeping my fingers crossed 🤞
@ben120798 ай бұрын
There’s some very good advice here, but there are three things I want to note: 1) You said don’t drive on the flat because it may cause more damage. I say, “who cares?” My life is worth far more than a replacement rim so I drive on it as far as I can (at 5 MPH with my flashers on). One note, if by driving on it will completely disable the trailer, then I’ll stop. 2) Call for law enforcement’s help. As a 30 year highway patrolman, I never minded driving behind a vehicle with a flat with all my lights on to help get them to a safer location. 3) You said, “I put my vest on before I get out of the truck.” The very next scene was of you getting out of your truck without your vest. I know you were in your driveway, I just thought it was a very funny editing “error.” Safe travels sir.
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS8 ай бұрын
thank you for watching, and I would like to respond to some of the things you said. 1) im not worried about damaging a rim either... if you can get off the road, by all means do it. but if youre 5 miles from an exit, as stated in the video, you will probably either peel the rim down to nothing, or cause more potential damage to the rig to the point it might need to be dropped on a low boy or parked on the side of the highway. youre also driving on a shoulder for 5 miles with less visability than you would have parked with triangles placed. most people can probably change the tire in the 25 minutes it would take to get to the exit. but to be fair, the subject of this video isnt to show how to change a spare tire or the process you should follow if you get a flat, its to provide information on tools and a preventative maintenance process that will help with speeding up the process changing a tire on the side of the road. 2) thanks for adding to the video with your suggestion to call a cop. ive actually done that once when i realized i could not get my truck spare down (old truck, rusted fast). the PA State Police dispatcher told me if there wasnt an emergency or a law being broken they could not send a patrolman, unfortunately. the next day i cut my spare down down and put it in my bed until i got the new truck. 3) yes i forgot to put the vest on. I literally spend 50-60 hours on each of these videos to help other RV'ers and trying to release them once a week is very difficult. my focus while editing is to make sure the information i give is correct, so that leaves room for visual editing errors sometimes.

An easy option to the breaker bar and a pipe for leverage is a 3’ breaker bar. I have had one for 4 years, works great and it easily fits in a side box on the camper
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS8 ай бұрын
that works too! I personally like the short breaker bar because its light, and the pipe I have is from an old harbor freight floor jack that i no longer have anymore. both light weight but definitely a 3' bar will do the job too! thanks for watching and adding!

i worked in material handling for years and high vis vests are everywhere for good reason. I think some people might feel it looks funny or is unnecessary but I believe in them. ive seen first hand what a forklift does to a body. i cant imagine what a truck at 60 mph would do.

Great set of tools and tips - curious if you have any experience with add-on TPMS sensors on trailers? Catching a flat as soon as it starts to lose air is the surest way to give more time to get off the road before the tire self-destructs.

Get your truck oil sprayed. Never undercoat your truck The undercoat drys and separates and the water sits inside of it. Oil spray every couple years . And on a dodge ram replace the 17 inch spare it is a doughnut spare tire replace it with a 20 inch full size tire If you have 20 inch rims. You dont want to have a 17 inch rear tire towing a trailer while the other side is a 20 inch tire. Why dodge does this is beyond me. Even their 20 inch rims come with a 17 inch spare
@RVTIPSANDTRAVELS7 ай бұрын
Hey Skip, my wheels and spare rim are all 18". its a 2017 3500 Tradesman edition. Also, Por15 is not really an undercoating... its more like an etching sealer/rust preventative. it is widely used in auto restoration, especially on frames. it wont separate, its pretty bulletproof as long as its applied correctly. It's expensive, but I guess they can get away with it because it works so well. i would agree rubberized undercoating doesnt last, but I have not heard of oil spraying your truck. Ill have to look into it. Thanks!
