The on a rails bit in GTA San Andreas is the cop chase section, which is totally badass (especially the helicopter bit) (and the jump through the billboard bit) (did that really happen or have I imagined it? it's been a while...) (and a few other bits).

Perhaps the most famous example of these heart-pounding adrenaline rushes are the House of the Dead games which embody a cocktail of on-rail shooter tropes all the way through, with a dash of boss battles for that extra zing! I particularly remember the first time I ever tried one of them. My friend put on House of the Dead 3 and gave me the flimsy second controller because it was his house, before I proceeded to blindly shoot my way through a whole treasure trove of secrets and collectables that he had no idea even existed. Sorry, Ollie. Best of three?

Final Fantasy IX also has a timed section during the hunting tournament in one of the cities. I remember it being so frustrating back in the day because the timer continued counting down during the camera movements at the start and end of each battle, which took FOREVER.

K O'Connell FFVIII did this too when you’re getting to Omega Weapon...10 seconds wasted on looking at the bell swinging. Of course it’s totally possible to engage OW in the remaining time but still...I don’t need to see the bell swinging for 10 seconds if I can hear it loud and clear over the pipe organ background music.

My favourite 17 cakes bit is absolutely wiping the floor with the beast in the inFamous 2 good ending. Sure it only lasts for a couple of seconds, but that's part of the satisfaction.
