Massive thank you to everyone for checking out the video. I went back and forward on making it - whether it was "too negative" or not - but VERY reassuring to know it's not just me noticing these things, and wanting to talk about them. Cheers! - Scott

never have doubts Scott, pretty much the entire gaming community is lamenting the lack of inspiration, remakes after remakes. Glitch and bug ridden games upon release. Franchises that are turning stale. Potentially good games ruined by microtransactions fuelled by a younger generation or by a couple dozen of "whales" that bring more revenue than 1000s of gamers would ever bring..

I agree with the majority of what you say all I can disagree with is I had a day 1 xbox one until recently and the load times drive me insane. I only have a little te to play. When 15 to 20% is loading then I am better of just watching tv or a movie or whatever. I was playing warframe with a friend and he had an issue with his Xbox one and had to reset it then reload the game. It almost took him 5 minutes to get back into my party and game. The SSD is incredible. That alone is worth the money for a new console

This is why gate keeping is a good thing. Too many casual normies starting to get into gaming and are a very loud bunch. Companies are starting to pander to people who spend more time being offended by games then actually playing them, these losers are ruining it for everyone. But money talks so eventually these companies will realise the stupidity of their decisions.

I adopted a mindset of delaying my gaming brain by a year. If a game comes out in 2022, I wait until 2023. I get it at its cheapest and usually complete. I have been doing this with every game I buy for the last 5 years and I have saved so much money while enjoying the games much more.

Honestly the best appraoch. I wait 3 month after release to catch reviews so I can get a full in-depth review. Elden Ring made waves, I've enjoyed the Souls games, so I got it new. But it's a rare case any more. I played Halo Infiinite on Game Pass, refuse to buy it, barely played the poor multiplayer. Honestly, you still get a great gaming experience on nintendo as far as enjoyment goes.

The problem with gaming is three fold. 1. Too much "future monetization" including DLC (that's sometimes on disc from launch), loot boxes, "micro" transactions and requiring paying for online multiplayer. 2. Companies releasing broken games and making gamers their unpaid beta testers. But the biggest problem with this is... 3. Idiot consumers supporting both of the above things. Stop buying broken crap and allowing yourself to be nickel and dimed and those practices will change.
@iconiastar6192

I totally agree with you. Especially point 2. When I was a child, if a game company launched an incomplete or buggy game people wouldn't buy from that company in the future because they couldn't be trusted. Now, that's what the majority of games are. I tend to wait a few months or years and I know that I'm going to get all of the content at least (I just got 5 games on PS+ all from 2011-2013.) But gamers nowadays are kind of silly. They'll regularly just pay the full price for half a game then pay the full price again in a few weeks for the "DLC" which should have been part of the original release. Look at the Arkham series or Spiderman. Both ended up with DLC that cost more than the original games and they were only a few extra missions. Another thing to add though. The developers don't care what players want or think. They just see the money rolling in from their overhyped titles and forget that a real person paid for it. It's no longer about creating good, original content. It's a race to see who can make the most money by building on an already successful title. Like Assassin's Creed which is currently on it's 13th game in the series. 13 games and most are practically identical in terms of gameplay with a couple branching out into pirates and ignoring the assassin side of the story. I used to pre-order games that I expected would be worth playing. Now I just wait until the bug fixes are released or the DLC comes with the full game.

But we can almost guarantee that the first set of online players will be kids who steal their parent's credit cards to buy their way to the top and only want to ruin the game for everyone else... much like GTA5 quickly became. There’s a difference between something that’s old school and something that’s outdated Old school is the Sega Master System: its games have aged quite a bit, but they’re still fun to play! You can ALWAYS go back to them! Outdated is those freemium smartphone games, MOBA titles like Fortnite and those more recent 1st party Nintendo titles that feel more like demos than full games! You will NEVER want to go back to them!

I wish developers would realize that forced DRM and Internet connectivity for games is a step backward. Look at the debacles GT7 and SimCity have endured; what's the point of paying a full $70 for the game if there is no guarantee you can play it at your leisure, especially if this ridiculous requirement is in place for SINGLE-PLAYER modes? In my opinion, at that point, you can't help but wonder if spending time with the game is either fun or just another full time job. This is not why people play games.

I buy physical games and regularly don’t play them for a while. Having just moved to a place where I don’t have internet yet, I now understand how frustrating these restrictions are. I can install a game but can’t play it because it requires a patch, or even the second half of the game needing to download because it isn’t even on the fucking disc. I have an entire library of games and movies on my hard drives that I don’t have access to because the console can’t verify the digital licenses. Absolute garbage.

100% agree. What really grinds my gears is having to sign up to some service when you want to play a single player game. I don't want a Bethesda/EA/UbiSoft/Blizzard/2k/etc. account, I just want to play my game that I purchased with my own hard earned cash. Why do I have to sign up for these accounts when I play single player games? EA is one of the worst offenders of this practice, where with some games you can't even get past the start screen until you agree to sign up for an EA account, or they hold certain content hostage and only allow access to it once you sign up for an account. This is bloody ridiculous!
@mark_spit7839

@@cobalt-snake6125 Exactly this. And the fact you have to agree to an absurd EULA just to play the damn game as well. Gone are the days of simply popping in the disc / cartridge and hitting start. However, I've found a work-around that has worked for some games that "require" an account: Go to settings and turn off the internet. It should then take you straight to the start screen without registering.

Any 90s kids around? I remember back then you bought a game from a game store or major chain store and that was it. Some games, such as Final Fantasy came with 3-4 discs. And I remember what you got was a COMPLETE GAME at the start. Granted it took longer to make games back then and even in the 00s. But now, I see what’s going on. I get the add ons and such later on but it’s becoming too much and a lot of greed. A lot of stuff that you pay extra for should have already been in the game from the start. Some new versions of older games are so unplayable, WWE 2K series, i hook up my PS2 and play the smackdown games and SVR games. Also what really did it for me was Forza. Car guys loves car games but with Emotes, or whatever Fortnite BS, needs to stop. It’s a racing game! Christ.

born in '89 here... another factor is that we got to read and maybe see some pictures about an upcoming game in magazines you had to buy. the actual gameplay was a complete mystery unless the magazine had some demo's or maybe a trailer on a CD. nowadays you could have watched 80% of the epic moments of a game online. -"ohw nice, this was from trailer number 38" Games are less of a surprise when they finally come out. Not saying games where better back than, maybe they where, maybe not... but it felt more like you where playing what the devs wanted you to play, some games are a form of art. Now it feels like you're playing what the executives want you to buy and keep spending money on. Also, developers seem to be less and less free to build what they want in the current political enviroment, and are pretty much bullied into political correct game design. I remember E3 was something to look out for because the magazines would show all the games presented there giving me something to read and to look out for. This year E3 took gaming as an excuse to provide us with a shitload of political correctness bullshit, without any really exciting games presented to us at all. Ohw yes, that extra emote for 299,99 so you can show everyone online you are rich enough for that nonsense...

@@uscp2 ‘87 here. And yes I remember the magazines and E3. I even remember the gaming channel back in the early 00s. Now with most new games, those who are lucky to get them early than the release date beat ‘em and post about the experience before I even have a chance to play. Yes I agree with everything you’re saying. Where’s the surprise? Where’s the expectations? Granted I look to see some gameplay and graphics but don’t spoil the entire game. I miss progression too. Back then, NOTHING was handed to you at the start of the game like it is for these new games. That aggravates me. Don’t give me fast cars or endgame weapons at the start. Let me work and grind to get them. Not doing that defends the purpose, IMO.

You´re forgetting an important point. IF you could play "the perfect game" , would you buy the next one after it? No. Because you already have the perfect one. Easy enough, yes? I always asked myself when I was 16-20 years old, why nearly each game besides some excepts for its generation misses characters or specific content? The answer is clear: It´s intended! If the industry developes perfect games with EVERYTHING you want, you wouldn´t buy their next products, so they have to find concepts to keep you interested, but also grow your desire for more and better products. And this is what they actually do. And they MUST do it, because they need money ALL the time.

i feel like a real big change is happening in the gaming industry we're going into a gaming depression where all the game companies are going into greed and suffering for it or making stupid mistakes and starting to go out of business. its totally gonna reset the industry and we're gonna be left with no leaders for us, we're gonna be left with indie stuff for a long few years and then it will slowly rise back up but it'll never be the same.

All the points are spot on. It's really sad actually. This era is the height of gaming and yet it's the worst generation to date. As we can see from long time gamers prefering to stick with older titles. new games are expensive, the game is broken, aggresive microtransactions, everything is open world with nothing to do, and if they're open world games, mostly they're bloated with a bunch of nonsense amount of collectibles to hit that "100 hour" mark. With all the advancement in gaming technology, their quality somehow became worse. A lot of developers seems to lost their passion for video games and just pumping out games for the sake of sales

@@fgc_roofer_07 No, I get what you are saying, however, the 90s and even most of 00s aren't without faults either. I lived through all of that and while some industry problems are new to this generation, there is always the scummy part. Unoriginality is always there in the industry as it always had a "me too" (I don't mean in the current context) problem. Trend-chasing instead of trend-making. When fighting games was the hottest thing, a lot of the devs and publishers tried half-hearted, shoddy attempts. When MMOs were getting beigger, everyone saw dollar signs and a lot of those projects crashed and burned at the gate. When FPS and open world games became trendy, everyone made their attempt at gray and brown shooters. MOBAs had that short window of this as well. Don't even get me started at all the one-year developed movie or TV show tie-in games that plagued the mid/late 90s to the end of 00s that ends up in the bargain bin as fast as they were released. As far as unfinished games back then, Lands of Lore 3 was a technical mess, even Fallout 2 had it's fair share of game-ending bugs like NPCs not getting out of your way, blocking an exit or an entrance so you better be save-scumming. Things like that just as an example. You can get stuck in a wall in Chrono Trigger if I'm remembering correctly as well. If anything this generation, or even the last few, did get right is making patching games way easier as internet has become ubiquitous. Of course it's a double-edged sword as it has also became a crutch as we are seeing now with day-1 patches and the way some devs and publisher kinda settled into the mindset that they can fix their game later. I guess my point is, corporations aren't your friend today nor were they back then. It's just that the money involved right now and mainstream coverage is a lot greater that a lot of the shady things they are doing now are more apparent (and some like Blizzard's Diablo Immortal or Ubisoft trying to chase the NFT money have dropped any pretenses what they truly are)

I think a fair bit of this can be summed up in a trend that reached it's natural conclusion: Finding a cash cow, milking the cash cow, and milking the cash cow dry. A lot of companies have reached that third stage and a lot of consumers are seeing that as well. Problem is, it's hard to find a cash cow, so companies are just trying to find ways to milk the consumer directly now (and refusing to admit that the cash cow is no longer as strong as it used to be) rather than take any risks, unable to get away from their "research" of what sells that tends to miss the point entirely.

The problem is that these days publishers demand games to come out within a few years when in reality a GOOD game takes time and careful planning. Too many games these days are realised as half of a game then updated over time and then given a list of DLCs to make the game more enjoyable and in many cases, more playable. CyberPunk 2077 was in development for a long time but CD Projeckt Red made too many promises and didn't even pay attention to previous generations. The game also was eventually put on a deadline which made them completely ignore all the problems the game had. And once again it was realised as barely a game and then updated over time. What needs to happen is for developers and publishers to be more patient and take more time to further develop, test, and polish their games. And don't give me that "But fans will be demanding the game sooner" crap. Because they don't REALLY have to answer to the fans. Especially when the game the developed properly and had more time to do so on released and it's a true game worth its price tag.

Reason 8: Core gamers (or gaming enthusiasts, or nerds, or whatever you want to call the dudes that are really *deep* into gaming) are increasingly turning away from big publishers, and towards the indie side. Numerically, that group may be negligible in terms of sales numbers, and thus are no longer catered to by the likes of EA, Activision-Blizzard-King or Ubisoft. But they are the ones who build and sustain communities, who shape the social ecosystems around 'their' games. Without them, mainstream gamers in the long run either move on or fail to even arrive at your game in the first place. Watch how over the next years, small enterprises will grow, while big publishers bloat up with marketing and shrill and shriller sales pitches while they continue to produce visionless, boring, forgettable, by-the-numbers drivel until at some point, they either get gobbled up, change their target group (gambling and gachas anyone?), or wither away.

@@man_without_fear6518 I disagree. If a developer came out with this structure/mentality they could ultimately add micro transactions to EVERY game they make... Eventually. The players couldn't see this as anything other than fantastic. If they buy full price it's a seemless ad/store free experience while it's hot. Then when things die down a bit they throw it on sale or move to FTP with all the bells and whistles, costumes, new weapons, blah, blah, blah and there's an entire new launch for an entire new crowd. They get to have 2 releases, extending the life of the game while making even more money at what would normally be the end of the games life and literally everyone's happy... Gaming refuses to acknowledge anything other than that day 1 release mentality and THAT'S where they're leaving millions on the table. The poors (myself included) haven't been able to keep up with every game we've wanted to play when it released but we still want to be a part of that community that can talk about something new to them, seperate the gaming communities from the "Day 1's" and the "When we can's". Make them focus on the whole picture, the hype train has been carrying most of them for yeeeaaaars, my way checks all the boxes: They have to focus on releasing a good product day 1 if they want that market to keep purchasing, but they also get to look down the road at what changes can be made for the longevity of the product and how to monetize it. This isn't the PS2 era where they're popping out new amazing games every year and if one flops, it's not that big of a deal. Games today take a literal decade to create sometimes so why not focus on making sure people want to keep playing it for even longer all while proving that they're listening to their fans. If every game took the approach kinda like GTAV of "here's the main game, now here's the thing that's mostly like the main game that's new all the time that'll keep you hooked..." Game developers are evolving their monetization because frankly everything about gaming is different now with huge gaps between releases but players still have the "gimme gimme I want it now, ok, I'm bored with it, what's next?" mentality. Games used to be cheap sprints across the field and now they're risky, expensive ventures. We have to evolve together to make it work. It's a win-win.
@Cornfed_MF
@Cornfed_MF 2 жыл бұрын
The developers get to focus on creating a somewhat smaller, more refined product without having to add bloat to extend the life of the game because they know that's just part of the crowd. Then they get to implement all the extras and busy work to keep people going... The Day 1's get a straightforward video game with an expiration... No, not an expiration date, an evolution date, to enjoy and then put behind them. The rest of us get the same game later on, it's just a different version that has different expectations. We need to accept that not every game is going to be something we can go back to later. I think today's throwaway society has created a monster within the gaming sphere and all we can do is try to make it the best version for everyone. And remember, just because the idea exists doesn't mean they have to follow it. There will be developers still doing their thing like Fromsoft, but for the EA's and the Ubisoft's of the world... We need balance. They give us the damn game we want with no fluff, we play it, enjoy it and hand it back and tell them to do whatever the hell they want with it. Gamers are going to have to choose which experience they want with these huge AAA titles, and have as much fun as possible, because it is what it is now.

this year I have been spending more money on ps2, ps3 and 360 games, and I don't even miss or care for 90% of what has been releasing on current hardware since most of it is not for me or put me off by their practices, not even indies since they are plagued with rouge+any genre or survival (not horror), I'm tired of them. The most exciting things this year were hatsune miku and warriors orochi 3 on pc, which are great games in their own right, but both ports and one of them is 11 yrs old.

But the odd time that I have bought new games it'd literally came onto subscription a few weeks to months layer and its made me raging that I spent that much money on a game. So nowadays I just wait untill it's available on gamepass/psplus

There are certainly some precedents for seeing it as a broken thing, but looking at the bigger picture, it's actually the corporations that produce it that are broken. That said, being pessimistic bastards about it changes nothing. We need to rise up to fix what has been broken and indie development is a step in the right direction. It's not the end of the gaming world.

Here's a thing Metroid Dread did so well that other games should learn from. I click the icon... and it's title screen immediately and you can just play. No minutes of splash screens and cutscenes. Just like the days of old where you put the game in and when you hit power it just played. Go back to that experience. I didn't know how much I missed it until Metroid Dread reminded me.

Presentation is huge. Metroid Dread actually has great a great presentation and it definitely did have cutscenes when I started playing the demo. There is nothing wrong with cutscenes when done well and are engaging instead of wasting time. A good splash screen can make you hyped for a game like in Dragon's Dogma or Deus Ex Human Revolution. There have been numerous games that put you right into the gameplay. If all you are doing is playing the most mainstream AAA annual titles, I can see how this would feel new. Even similar games like Ori do the same as Metroid in it puts you right into the game. If you like Metroid Dread and haven't played either Ori, you are in for a treat.

I really thought that Metroid Dread was a great example of how to modernize an old school genre with all the new tech and design advancements invented over the years. The controls were the most refined of any Metroid game to date and it was joy to just move around the world. I really like how they integrated the cutscenes into the game. Just enough exposition to get the point across and you were back to playing.

I find 2 main reasons for me personally that effect my gaming experience. 1. Games just including so many collectibles which is getting really boring now, I’m a completionist and love getting Platinum trophies so collecting so many collectibles gets on my nerves, as much as I love The Last Of Us franchise, the collectibles aspect were very frustrating, and 2. Which the first point is also included within this point, how long game are these days, like I personally want to play the Yakuza franchise, obviously starting with 0, and when I saw it’s like a 140 hour game to 100%, it just puts me off playing it, because, I just don’t have the time to sit around playing that solidly, so it will take a while to finish it, and when there’s plenty of other games I wish to play, any long ass titles I just side line. Like the longest game I recently completed was probably Lego Star Wars the Skywalker saga, and that was a slog at 60 odd hours, so titles ranging over 100 are just exhausting. It also has a knock on effect, as like I said with Yakuza, 0 is that long, how long are like what…. The other 6 there are…. Too long winded. Exactly why I’ve not gone further in the Assassins creed franchise, Last one I finished was Revelations, and now there are so many and so long to complete, it just throws me off bothering. I just feel with games being rolled out so regularly there’s no chance to play everything with really long titles taking up your time. So be nice if the gaming industry could cut back on the duration these things take to finish. Less is more as they say.

Have to wonder how much you were paid to endorse the subscription model. Personally I would still prefer a hard copy if it were viable, because lets face it PS or Xbox can remove you fav title from their library whenever they chose to. Same can be said on steam that isn't subscription based but once I've bought a title I'm not paying perpetually to play it.

In my opinion I think the biggest thing is companies not listening to their fan base. Companies now just want more people to buy their game even if they have to sacrifice their already establish fan base. Look at battlefield 2042 and more recently saints row remake and neither of those are what the fans wanted.

yea it is true that nowadays the games focus on giving you aditional content that costs money, take assassin's creed for example, the best armor with the greatest effects you have to buy for around 20 bucks per armor set and they also want you to buy dlcs for 20 bucks or more. and only when you have all dlcs then the game feels like a finished product

I ended up replaying older games over new ones (dating back to 2010 or older on older systems and 2015 for PS4). Been getting to be a bad habit of mine, especially when there are lots of interesting new games or long awaited sequels to older titles. Also has anyone else felt that maybe we older gamers and the current generation of newer gamers might be having a hand in breaking the gaming industry? I mean, I am just curious, seeing as I refuse to support Mobile-only titles and micro-transactions and other newer (albeit in my eyes useless) gaming features that seem popular with younger gamer generation.

Old games just keep getting better...I think that's going to be a big hurdle for the games industry in the future. It was one thing when "retro" games meant stuff like Asteroids or Donkey Kong, but now I can emulate GameCube and PS2 games on my phone! Soon enough, current generation games will be dirt cheap (or easily pirated) and the improvements new systems can make will barely be perceptible to the naked eye; what will be the incentive of staying current, then?

regarding CDprojekt stock going down 75%, its not because of the failure of Cyberpunk, it certainly didn't help, but their stock price was overinflated already because of the sheer amount of hype causing people to invest in the stock, when it was revealed the game was a shitshow at launch, obviously people pulled out even more, but the stock would've dropped regardless. now they're back to around the level they were after Witcher 3

Needing new games is the main issue imo. To elaborate basically fromsoft is doing the right things right now. Yes we wanted more dark souls games but they gave us elden ring basically. A whole new environment and lore to dive into with the same mechanics we love, while also telling us secretly from job postings "Hey armored core is comming back." If developers dont take the initiative to revive old IP's in certain ways they are doomed to fall into the rut of giving us the same thing over again with barely anything new to enjoy in it. Assassins creed just started bloating out the gameplay and ignored their roots versus adding new bells and whistles to the same bike so to speak, which can also be said about CoD, GTA, and anything bethesda has done since Skyrim. Tbh its moments like this that make me look forward to games like Black myth Wukong in the future cause its something we havent seen or again armored core cause it needs a revitalizing.

It’s odd because we are at a point with games where we really haven’t had the next big leap in evolution that forever changes the landscape as pong to 16-bit, 2D to 3D and even HD was a big leap . Feels like Virtual Reality can be that but we just aren’t in a space where that is the default preferred way to play. Add on costs, and longer console generations plus cross gen titles. Feels like we still haven’t hit a title or titles that scream “NO way any of this would run or be conceived on ps4/Xbone”

I think that their biggest issue is that they're worried about all the wrong things and that's because they're trying to appease shareholders instead of consumers. Yeah, shareholders love hearing about all of these features, how big the map is, how good the graphics are, the frames per second, blah, blah, blah. What does the average consumer care about? I'm not talking about the hardcore gamers that are investing 30+ hours a week on "Elden Ring". I'm talking about people like myself, a mid 30's guy playing "It Takes Two" with a daughter or "Little Nightmares". Well, what do the average consumers care about? Is it fun? Can I play couch co-op or competitive? If not, is it interesting for others to watch (like "Little Nightmares")? If the answers to those questions are "No" or "What do you mean by 'fun'?" We are out. Edit: Hell, that's why Nintendo has lasted while other companies have come and gone. Their games may not have the most features, best graphics, etc but they are fun and amusing. Take WWE2K22 and Red Dead Redemption for example. Yeah, WWE has got MyRise, a career mode, MyGM, MyFaction, blah, blah, blah. All of that is mostly ignored so my family and I can smack each other's wrestlers with steel chairs and kendo sticks (or as my older daughter calls them "light sabers"). "Red Dead Redemption"? Yeah, I finished the story but I bought it because my wife was interested in it after seeing the trailer. She didn't care about anything else in it but riding horses around and taking care of them (I'd go to the bathroom and come back to find that my horse had been cleaned, well fed, and had gotten plenty of pats).

Scott's articles are always on point, while I may not agree on all of his takes on some games, his critiques of the industry as a whole are always a must-watch. The last entry was the most important IMO, the consumerist culture and cycles of Preorder-Buy-Buy DLC-Buy remaster are getting tiresome and basically just capitalize on the "Fear of missing out". Sadly, money talks and we need to show gaming companies that we want a change.

Its been years since i've bought any triple A or "big company" games since at least for me and my country coin value, is rather expensive, and gonna say that even by just being a side watcher most modern games from said companies feel hollow and its kinda obvious just the name carries them, while "indie" games are where i can get tons of interesting games or at least something that feels just FUN and works (not an incomplete game with high price) About the microtransactions, i cant complain too much since i've spent some money on gacha games (just one and on the aniversary since the fairly cheap pack lets you choose anything you want) but what i can say is that extreme predatory practices are the worst ones, specially when what you are buying is not even worth its price like the diablo things

I was thinking about something. And keep in mind I'm speaking in PlayStation for generations, because that's the system I've always worked with... Do you realize, that GTA has not put out a game for the PS4 generation. GTA III, vice City, and San Andreas we're all released on the PlayStation 2. Grand theft Auto four and five were both designed for PlayStation 3... And yes they did make a ridiculous amount of money for all of us that upgraded... But everybody who played the game, expected vice City to come out before PlayStation 5. This is the first time we have not had a single player outing from GTA introduced exclusively for a generation. Considering that GTA is rockstar's flagship series, and that quite frankly the PlayStation 4 is more powerful than anyone gives it credit for, this could have been something that could have completely turned around the whole trilogy release. I have the trilogy, I play the trilogy on PS4 and I really don't have a problem with it, especially since they've been updating it. I mention all that basically just to say this. GTA 6 has got to be a home run, and with the news coming from leakers and Rockstar itself... I am not too hopeful. Essentially, what they've been messing up on, is bad... The trilogy, rdr2 online, but third time pays for all. If 6 underperforms, has a lackluster single player, and online doesn't pull its weight... I believe that the fan base will leave. And I don't want them to do that, I want Rockstar games to justify my 20-year obsession with them. I seriously hope they can.
