I just moved back to Puerto Rico. I left Borinquen back in 1998 after graduation from UPR Mayagüez with a BS in engineering. I just couldn’t find a job in the island back then. I left disappointed for some of the reasons that you mentioned in the video. I spent 23 years in the states, but honestly I would had moved back to the island earlier if I had the chance. A feeling of nostalgia of coming back to my cultural roots and heritage started to settled-in in my heart. I was also looking forward to escape the rat race which made me very unhappy living in the states. It grew even stronger after the natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemia. I could talk for hours about the whole thing. In summary we recently moved back, slowed down a lot and mostly unplugged from the negativity of the news and social media, and currently enjoying the beauty and the little things that the island has to offer. Thanks for the video!

Great video! I left PR in 2005, I was in my 30's so I wanted to explore more. Now I'm getting to my 50's and I really miss my island. Part of my family is mad because I'm moving back, but no one can have me and my husband and a dog in their houses so there's no choice. Living in the states is getting too expensive, and even though PR is getting expensive as well, I think that you can make it. I've been looking for jobs and there are jobs, and like you said, people don't want to work because it's better to live from the system. The rent in PR is way cheaper than in the states, and with a job paying at least $15 an hour I can survive.

@@Blueskyz316 In the San Juan area there’s a lot of resorts and nice restaurants. You should go online see what you can find. The other Thing I would if I was you stay where students stay even if have to share a room because it’s more affordable until you have things figure out. Conserve your money. There’s also adds in clasificados that have a section for employment. Also if you don’t know Spanish learn will help a lot.Lastly if you don’t know Spanish don’t get discourage you can get by in the capital for a while. Best wishes.

Great video, Ana. My husband and I have owned a condo in Isabela for almost 9 years. We spend anywhere from 3 to 6 months a year in PR. Up to the last year or two, we seriously thought of moving permanently to the island. However, several of the things you mentioned, along with 2 unexpected health issues with me, have caused us to re-consider. We absolutely love PR and I speak Spanish pretty well. We love the beauty of the island as well as its people and culture. But the severe infrastructure problems (water, electricity, road repair) as well as the corrupt government is very hard to face living with for the rest of our lives. Shortly after Maria, We met a man (seated next to us at Royal Isabela golf course restaurant). He was from the States and was over-seeing the repair of the electricity on the west side. He told us he had the opportunity to go back and review the history of the funds given to PR for repair, innovation, and maintenance for DECADES back. He was astounded that very little had been achieved despite the fact that PR has been given boat-loads of money…he raised his hands up to us exclaiming “Where the heck did all the money go???” It is so sad. Also, a good friend of mine (who was in local government in the states) said “you will only have good infrastructure with a good tax base”. On the northwest side where we live, there is great resistance to resorts being built to attract tourists. The environment is often cited. I love the environment too and want it protected. But I think a happy medium could be reached. People need jobs. And the PR people deserve good and honest politicians. We still haven’t made up our minds completely yet…as to whether we will move to PR permanently. But the things I just related weigh heavy on us.

Thank you. There is a lot of good in the island but there are serious issues, that I don't know what they haven't been fixed , and its frustrating. Best of luck on your decision, Im sure is not easy deciding. You gotta go with your gut.

Sorry but that man lied to you, until Hurricane Maria all repair and infrastructure was built by the AEE, our electric infrastructure is more complex and resilient that anything in the US that get constantly knocked out by any wind over 30mph, too much rain or snow. The AEE and other infrastructure failed because our politicians along with corrupt politicians from the US crippled our infrastructure so they can have a excuse for privatizacion so all those senators and legislators could receive generous campaign donations.

The corruption started from Congress and the white house. Plus Charles Herbert Allen wired Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 entire sugarcane economy 💰 to Wall Street which is Domino Sugar today. The Jones Act Law since 1920 is enslaving Boricuas 🇵🇷on the island 🇵🇷. Congress and Wall Street are the first to blame for the corruption

Puerto Rico is a beautiful place. I just recently visited Puerto Rico after 25 years. Is a sad situation with our beautiful island that problems are not resolved and some are getting worse. Our government is so corrupt that I hope some day we are going to be able to have an honest government. Our people are so beautiful, you feel the magic of the people and the island. Is really an enchanted island. Let's keep hoping for a better Puerto Rico! Thank you Ana for this video, it is sad but is the reality Puerto Rico is experiencing.

The only way for the government to get right in Puerto Rico is to have Anglo and or Afro American governors and other high officials from the USA directly govern the island. Obviously, the tendency for dishonesty among native born Puerto Rican officials when there is a lot of money involved is just too great for them to resist.

At the end you mentioned crime, like an afterthought. Actually, it was the main reason I left the island with my family 30 years ago. I agree with everything else you mentioned, and indeed, I was complaining a lot about all of that, too. Complacency, though, to all these problems may be the reason why nothing gets resolved over the years. Neither government nor people seem to care. One thing that upsets me when I go there is the decrepit state of almost every building around, not only the abandoned buildings full of graffiti, garbage and overgrown grass but also, though not as bad, buildings in use show decay and lack of attention. No question that it rains a lot and humidity is always high causing mold and mildew everywhere, and the grass grows very fast, but that should be reason to do more for maintenance rather than less. Likewise, the excessive number of retail signs of all sizes, material and shape in commercial areas adding to the sensation of mess, same as broken sidewalks used as parking space because there are no parking lots. I don't know how they got a permit to operate the business without a parking lot commensurate to the volume of business. I realize you also missed to mention the traffic mess caused by people failing to follow rules. Why would anyone want to live in Puerto Rico? Despite all of that, I still get very nostalgic of my days growing up there, and I can't forget of the beauty God gave the island with the mountains and the ocean. I'm thinking of going back to retire in a place high in the mountains.

Spot on! However, the education problem stems back to the 1980’s and maybe even the 70’s. I was in a private school in the 80’s (Colegio La Merced in Hato Rey) and mom put me there because the public school system was mediocre. I then moved to NYC and went to a public school there in early ‘91 for 7th grade. Comparing the quality of education in NYC from personal experience is the same as in a private school in PR. Systematically, the quality of the island’s public school system has declined exponentially. It has gotten worse now than ever before but it has been on the decline since much earlier.

When U.S. decided to place lots of companies in Puerto Rico to stimulate the economic, Puerto Rico was doing great, and the U.S. economic was 3% and Puerto Rico was 2% but when the 10-year term was up they took out all the companies along with all the capital gains that they made, including all the pensions funds leaving the governor in a spot without money to pay for essential service, like police , and others. Remember they left with 70 billion dollars and Puerto Rico was left to carry the bag. Banco popular told the Governor, but it was too late, and the damage was done, and wall street had a good day while the Puerto Rican people had to repay all that money. Why they did it? To keep Puerto Rico down and to forget about independence and to continue to depend on the U.S.

Learning is not about smart boards, technology or beautiful facilities, although that helps. A good curriculum, structure and some discipline can lead to great learning. I went to High school in Puerto Rico in the 1970's. I see schools here and they leave a lot to be desired. They have beautiful buildings and technology, but there is little discipline, some (not all) low quality teachers, and low standards designed to allow kids to feel better about themselves versus challenging them to meet their maximum potential. I went to college late in life and had younger classmates. The quality of their education up to that point was so poor, that one of the professors apologized to me for how slow and limited the class was. She felt the rest of the class was holding me back. They were. All of that said, these are just symptoms of greater problems plaguing our society.

Hello Ana, just watched your video and you were on point in every case. Yes this may make some of our fellow Boriqua's uncomfortable however, we can't solve our problems unless we are willing to discuss them and bring them to light. The most important matter being to hold corrupt politicians who cheat the people of Puerto Rico from receiving their services responsible and with dire penalties. The consequences of their actions should be so severe that it would absolutely make them pause. The example you made of the lady who had just received 6 months is a travesty. These are some of the reasons that I support statehood for the island. Not that American Politicians are any better but at least they're known to run a more effective government and insure that it's people can enjoy a better life. Thanks again, 👋👍

Puerto Rico ever since I left there with my parents when I was 10 in 1975 has been mismanaged, incompetence and thief’s. Not to mention the drug gangs. Nothing in that respect has changed. The govt there is A DISASTER! And don’t mention the electrical infrastructure. That has NEVER been fixed! EVER! PR needs serious political and cultural changes. For that to happen, PR needs visionary leaders. I wouldn't recommend coming to the island if you are coming here under Act 60. That's a very controversial law, a lot of Puerto Ricans hate it because its causing mass gentrification to the island and many people are being bought out of their towns because of it, there's talk about getting it taken down in the government because so many people hate it. It was put up by the same corrupt PR politicians she's talking about, its just a ploy to get more Non-Puerto Ricans to come to the island to support statehood. I changed paths while living in NY . I got into real estate making more money and honestly I couldn’t deal with kids anymore , I was burnt out . So I was making more money in real estate . Now living here I’m managing airbnbs and making money on KZbin . Way better cause I’m my own boss now, work on my time.I think it has recovered from Maria as much it can, but those really affected are the ones that would need to truly answer that .

As for the solo female I wouldn’t worry about that part. As to education in P.Rico, it has always been this way. I honestly think it will always be the same. It's a beautiful island, but unfortunately, it will never change. Everything boils down to 2 main reason: the low wages and high cost of living that make living in the US seems better cause very few puertoricans bother to research the real cost of living and the quality of life over there. The second real reason is our incompetent corrupt politicians that people here keep voting for cause they don't bother to think and vote using their feelings and other criteria like looks or promises. I would never move to the plantation called USA. I will keep fighting for my island future and enjoy living in my little paradise even with all the problems.

@AnaSantapau
@AnaSantapau 2 жыл бұрын
The reality is the pay is very low here, even if you have a Masters degree you would be getting pennies, only certain professions make better money, like architects, doctors and lawyers, and even they make less here. Having your own business is another way I think to live well here, thats why Im working on creating content. You can probably get a sales position and make minimum wage and you wouldn't make enough to pay rent, car etc.

Going by what friends have told me about Puerto Rico then and now, plus reading comments here and seeing that the issues are all shared and linked, it's clear it's time the shackles come off and Puerto Rico move to the status of the island nation of Palau. It's the Free Association route. The Palau have their history with the usa but today the Free Association status of Palau is a great thing for them and gives them a special type of sovereignty. Puerto Rico would have more chances to advance their infrastructure, healthcare, education, the essentials in society, and their trade and commerce as well (no hindering Jones act).

If you are focused you can leave anywhere! In the states you get paid more but living is way expensive especially in the tourist states like NY FL Texas and etc. the island is minum wag but if you are moving to live a better life and enjoy the island you are fine. As long as you make enough to pay the bills and food you’ll be fine. Living there isn’t about luxury it’s about family. Trying something new is great. Don’t be afraid if it doesn’t work out that great move back. It’s not for everyone but there are jobs on the island!! People just don’t want to work!! Not enough workers in the area so people are looking to hire. Will you get paid over $20hr probably not but you will have enough work on your hands to live good. Education isn’t all that great but it depends on where you live and if they have enough resources!! Private schools are the way to go if you can afford it. In my families town it’s like $200-$300 a month

If i miss the island i just visit, sadly I would say, that pr should have been a state since the 50s, but now pr are so corrupted that it would take more than a decade to recover after maria hurricane, I was there while that storm hit the island, i spent so.many months without power amd water, its insane. PR infrastructure has been abandone by all governmwnts pnp and ppd those policiams has put pr down hill. Even retired people who return back to enjoy their oensions end it up returnimg to Usa.

Many Boricuas are oblivious to the fundamental reason why we leave our homeland. The core reason why Boricuas leave is because Boriken is a colony. Only a third of Puerto Ricans have remained, and of that 3 million, half live in poverty! Many people, however, believe that Puerto Rico is a democracy. But if she were, the government would represent the needs of the Puerto Ricans. How could you then explain 6 million Boricuas leaving our beautiful homeland? They left, because the government of Puerto Rico represents exclusively the interest of the United States (US). And, the more Boricuas that the US can get out of Boriken, the sooner the US to have our beautiful island entirely for herself! The US was forced to invent the lie that Puerto Rico is a democracy. After the nationalists’ insurrection of 1950, the US decided to create, in 1952, a so-called “Commonwealth of Puerto Rico”. In 1953, the US asked the United Nations (UN) to remove Puerto Rico from its list of colonies, because she had attained self-government. It did, and that’s why today Puerto Rico is not on the UN list. Today, the UN understands that the US lied in 1953, and has issued a total of 42 resolutions asking her to immediately return Puerto Rico’s sovereignty to the Puerto Ricans. The US has consistently refused, and thus, is willfully committing a crime against humanity! The solution, therefore, is for the 9 million Boricuas worldwide to engage in permanent resistance to force the US to comply with international law. A free Boriken would get the 6 million who left to return home!

I moved from NY to Manati, PR in late 2019. In just 3 weeks the quakes started, then the pandemic and I began to regret it. Unfortunately still do. In just 2 yrs 8 months and I'm planning to return back to NY. I can't stand it here. It's too hot! The mosquitoes have given me these bad infections that aren't healing. I miss winters and snow. I miss my favorite stores that don't exist here at all. I miss wearing jeans, sweaters, boots too. I don't even like the beaches here cuz the sand feels like quick sand. I can't walk on the beach cuz my feet sink in. Too many dogs n cats walking around wanting food. Lizards inside my house as if they paid rent. And the waterbugs are huge and walk everywhere. I was born n raised in ny and for 53 yrs never seen anything like this. So good bye PR hello ny.
