I just started reading berserk, I know Griffith is the villian and I already saw (spolier) Him raping a girls and guts cries(maybe guts gf) and does this change the way you read the story ? I mean is it a big reveal ? Like a big twist ?

@@thevigilantone5902 yes and no. In the end of blackswordsman arc you realize that griffith is the villain, but you dont know why or anything. So in a sense Miura spoils you that griffith is the villain on purpuse, because you are looking at the golden age arc through very different lense than if you didnt know he was the villain. But, you definitely spoiled yourself a little by seeing some of why he is a villain, but dont worry. The interesting part is not because of rape or anything, so you havent spoiled yourself on much really. Dont worry, keep reading.

When I first read it I had to take a couple day break after the eclipse happened, I needed time to process that cus it was so fucked. I didn’t know any spoilers going in either all I knew was the main characters name was guts. I don’t even know how you’d go about finishing this series, it’s not like guts is ever gonna be able to match up physically with griffith. I genuinely think there won’t be a final battle between them at all I think Griffith will be defeated in a unique way compared to how the villain goes down in most stories

You know what might be an interesting video idea? Examining the evolution of setting and structure in long-running series to keep them fresh. All of the series could be ones you've reviewed. Berserk evolves in that it goes from a dark, edgy revenge story (Black Swordsman) to a fairly low-magic, drama-and-politics-heavy story (the Golden Age Arc), and then slowly worked its way into a high fantasy with the Astral Merge. One Piece evolves in that it has different islands, so each arc is a totally new adventure. Plus, some of the arcs delve into new plot layouts, like a prison break in Impel Down, or a war in Marineford. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure evolves in that it has an anthology style format, so every few years it changes its protagonist, villain, supporting cast, time period and genre. This allows Araki to examine Godfather-style mafia stories, murder mysteries, westerns, etc. Hunter x Hunter evolves in that Togashi is willing to throw out all narrative conventions. For example, his treatment of Gon is unlike how other Shonen authors would handle it, and even after Gon is out of the picture Togashi kept the story going.

@@thomyboy3219 I know this is old but the desire for more Berserk never dies. If you google Berserk Redux you can find another version. Full disclosure though the majority of it does use the 2016 anime. What it is is a fan that took the 97 anime, the 3 movies, and the 2016 anime and then edited and spliced things together to make it as close to the manga as possible. It can be a little jarring sometimes when it swaps between completely different art styles but you get used to it. There are 10 parts averaging 1&1/2 to 2 hours each and it actually starts in chronological order so it puts the golden age before black swordman then it ends around the moment they meet the goofy pirate. I still think overall the 97 anime is best animated Berserk but sometimes I really have the desire to see the story after the golden age in motion even if it's not done as well. Thankfully the music from 2016's anime was still top tier. After that though, yeah the manga is the only place left to go.

And yeah after the ending of the 97 anime I really didn't feel like I had much choice I *needed* to know what happens next and it did not disappoint. The manga basically feels like everything you love about the story with WAY more content even within the parts you've already seen so sooner or later it will pull you in. ;)

Okay I just finished reading the series for the first time after hearing you and Dritzzt praise it so highly. After having done so I must say I feel empty inside. Like I know I've just experienced peak story telling and everything else I read will be down hill from here. Everything from the world building, the characters, the story, the art, I repeat the fucking art is incredible. And Guts, man this guy has solidified himself as my favorite protag ever. Honestly I wish it would have taken another ten years from now for me to have discovered the series. I think you should read read Chainsawman GLRs. It’s really good and not enough people are talking about it. Eccentric characters that all get subtle development, the king of shounen MCs, mystery that keeps you hooked from the jump, and a balls to the wall plot that will keep you guessing what will come next. It’s dark and has crazy likable characters in the same vein as something like Dorohedoro, has existential dread, and a plot that would completely not make sense without context like Steel Ball Run, but makes sense in the moment like a fever dream. Amazing stuff.

Just finished Volume 20 so I'm halfway. I really like it. The writing for the characters is usually very good, the development is great for characters like Guts and Griffith, the art and detail is always beautiful, it definitely does not hold back but isn't overly edgy as it has fun characters like Puck Judeau and Isidro, the villains are always messed up and always memorable and yet miura always finds a way to make them understandable (The Count, Rosine and even Zodd), character designs are fantastic especially the five Godhand. Only issue I have is the fight scenes especially in the golden age with all the War fluff. There is always too much going on i think and I can never tell for sure what's going on. And Casca was really annoying at first. Did not like her at all until she became friendly with Guts (which didn't last long) Edit: Am on Volume 38 now. Almost caught up (Chapter 334) Edit: i have caught up *sobs*

i read chapter 1 yesterday, it took me an hour and a half, I noticed that that the sacrificial brand looked like the hunters mark from bloodborne (or rather hm looks like the brand)

I’m not sure about the king of dark fantasy overall, but in manga it’s up there with Made in Abyss for the best dark fantasy in the medium. Overall, I think there are better examples in books like the Gentleman Bastard Series, or the First Law books in that universe that are all amazing to read through. Behind those two and Sandman, Berserk and Made in Abyss are right behind in my opinion. Then behind those comes stories like the Fables comics, B.P.R.D. series from Hellboy, Mark Lawrence novels, etc. But, if anyone is looking for the best dark sci-if, everyone needs to read Tokyo Ghost at least one time in their life. Best comic book of all time.

I cannot understand why no one has decided to put some serious money and give it a good adaptation BUT the hiatus is so much depressing, makes you believe Miura has serious problems on deciding how the story should progress

Why has this video of yours not been suggested to me... Berserk is my fave piece of fiction and yet someone whom I watch both GrandLine and DudeInARoom somehow his discussion of my favorite manga was never suggested to me... algorithm working as intended.

I surely can't speak for everyone but one of the reasons I really am attached to Berserk is it's portrayal of mental health with Guts. He comes off as evil in the first arch, but at the end of it you see him shed some tears. The second arch explains it all before bringing us back to where we started. One arch after the other Guts heals a little bit. For me, using the berserker armor is like metaphor for letting loose your anger, how it seems justified/necessary at times at the risk of hurting or alienation those closest to us and how self-awarness is difficult but key to return to "normal" (however wounded).
