I hope this helps someone but I don't think it is me .,and many others feel this way judging from the comments . Whatever your issues are you have found that hoarding helps in a somewhat soothing way to me it is about soothing What's going on in your life or your past that somehow the hoarding makes it better tolerable or blocks it out.Love to the hoarding community Someday I will be a minimalist.
@michelelovell31727 жыл бұрын
Whaaaat.... This is so unrealistic. You sound like so many others who haven't actually gone through hoarding - either personally or know someone who does. It is SO not an issue of how long you've had something. It is also not an issue of putting something where it belongs. If you're starting the process of de-hoarding, everything is everywhere! Designating a spot for something means cleaning out the area where you want it to go then where do you put all THAT stuff?? You HAVE to touch stuff more than once. I think I need to start making videos about the de-hoarding I have personally been working through for the last TEN YEARS and it's been totally worth it! But your ideas are waaaay unrealistic. TO ANY HOARDERS OUT THERE - DO NOT LET THIS INFORMATION DISCOURAGE YOU - KEEP WORKING ON IT.

Agreed. Its sounds more like advice for someone who has accidentally accumulated too much stuff and just wants to downsize. Not someone with a serious compulsive disorder. People who animal hoard will often have animal fecal matter all over their home. Its being compulsively drawn to the chaos and disarray hoarding creates, replicating the chaos and anxiety from childhood. Its replacing loneliness as most hoarders have an attachment disorder with other people and their initial subconscious instincts on how to relieve loneliness is scewed. Its not about rather or not items inspire joy so keep or toss.

These are guidelines for decluttering, not hoarding, which is currently recognized as a psychological disorder by the DSM. Your advice is like telling a suicidal person to just cheer up and sing a happy song. If you want to be of help, please educate yourself and respect the fact that this is a genuine disorder.

@@getitdonewithsiobhan There is a podcast episode on Psychology in Seattle available on KZbin which discusses hoarding disorder in great depth. It may be of help to you. I have clinical depression, so my house looks a bit hoardery, though in the strictest sense of the word, I'm not a hoarder since I have no emotional attachment to the stuff. It piles up around me due to general lethargy, and I'm trying to do better. If this sounds more like your situation, I would suggest the...sorry for the swearing if it offends you...Unfuck Your Habitat website. It has before and after photos and helps you break tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. Also good is the BBC show How Clean Is Your House for motivation... available on KZbin. Wish you the best in your journeys. Peace and love in the new year. You can do this!

"Have issues with hoarding? Buy more crap you don't need!" Hi. I'm a child of a hoarder. This video actually pisses me off. it's as if you have no clue, yet you claim to do this for a living. Do you sell weight loss stuff, too? A "kit" is only going to be more fodder! Seriously! How unconscionable to sell hoarders anything!
@katiegreer-janes85427 жыл бұрын
I am also a child of a hoarder, I have to agree, I feel that they don't realise it's a mental illness and there is usually a deeper reason for doing this
@ArtJourneyUK7 жыл бұрын
katie greer-janes amen! "If you haven't used it for a year, let it go..." Really?!? You guys know nothing about Hoarding Disorder. Those with this issue cannot think that rationally about letting stuff go. They need psychotherapy and a retraining of their beliefs. There's usually a deep seated, psychological issue that needs addressing so they can move forward and let stuff go (I'm also a child of a hoarder). This might be decent advice for someone with a "bit of clutter"... but it's not suitable for someone suffering from hoarding disorder.
@mishim8967 жыл бұрын
I agree. This seems totally geared towards someone with a cluttering problem, such as myself, who can actually bring themselves to let go of things if motivated to go through them and maybe create some preventions against future "cluttering". They have used the wrong terminology in the word hoarding.

If house was on fire, you would not go in after it.....not worth saving. (Do you need it) 6. Living space rule, when going through stuff, there is always a living space....a place for everything. 7. Procrastination rule: build momentum off of small items, doing laundry, don't put in laundry, molds............No....follow through...should be your skill set. Also, if he had things written down it might have helped him as it was rather a jumble & not clear what he was meaning.

Its gone for good! Rarely is it there after 2 days. In a fire? Naturally its my clothes shoes wallet ipod touch. What about "rainy day" things? Say you have two sets of cookware? And one is put in storage for the day what your using breaks? Isnt that not a smart investment?

Then I end up with so many piles/ stacks that just grow & grow & grow as I forget expiration dates/ special offers/openings & shows & clearance sales & store closings. @themadlibrarian29337 жыл бұрын
Have you tried a document shredder? A cross-cut shredder is preferable. You should keep your tax returns for about five years. The IRS can audit three previous years, longer if fraud is suspected. The downside of a document shredder is that the amount of paper waste will fluff up at least 3-4 times in volume. Processing mail in a timely way is important. I love magazines, but I limit my subscriptions to three or four, and I need to read them within a month. Seeing uses for things that may or may not exist hurts and slows you down. A useful guide is what you ACTUALLY do. This got me away from using coupons for groceries.

This is the most idiotic advice I have heard. Who runs back into their house to save anything other than people or pets?
@christinerobinson93722 жыл бұрын
Your rules may work fine for people who just need to get into the right habits. They are ridiculous for people who have hoarding disorder. I can not follow your rules. Everything I have hoarded HAS VALUE to me. I have a reason for keeping it, a use for it. I have plans and designs for it. But I never get around to working on it because how can I work on a project when the dishes aren't done and the laundry is still in the washer? The dishes aren't done and the laundry is still in the washer because I can not find the motivation to do repetitious, meaningless, boring tasks. I have isolated days where I find the motivation, but it dissipates because my efforts produce so little result. I lost sixty pounds and had a lot of clothing that was too large for me. I was able to bag them up and take them to the donation center because they were going to do somebody some good. But I still have two or three bags full of things I really liked, and I want to take them in so I can wear them again. But I never get around to it. I can't give them up because I really did like them. But taking them in is just for me, it's taking care of me and I have no motivation to take care of me. I have more books than I can ever read, I used to love reading, but I hardly read at all anymore. I have more yarn than I can crochet in a lifetime. I made some things to sell but I have not attempted to sell them. As for the house-burning rule, there is nothing in that house that I would try to save, including the house. If a fire ever starts, I will walk out and let it burn. If I could save my grandmother's piano and sewing machine, I would do that, but I know I wouldn't be able to so I wouldn't try. I would save my cats, so I don't have cats anymore. When the last one passed I said that's it, I'm done taking care of pets now. If you see something you want in the Goodwill, you better pick it up right now because tomorrow or this afternoon it will be gone. If there is anything I really hate, it's needing to use something I no longer have because I got rid of it, and now I have to buy another. I've stopped buying things to hoard (except books) so now I hoard garbage. I hoard tin cans because I saw directions on how to produce solar heat using tin cans. I hoard boxes because I like to keep things in boxes. Then I saw directions on how to build furniture from cardboard boxes, and I convinced myself that might be a source of income for me. Money is part of the problem. I could use more money. I could sew this, build that, make this and sell it. Only I never do. And on another level, my stuff is company. I live alone and would feel alone in empty rooms. As annoying as it gets, my stuff keeps me company. And it keeps company away. I have never been comfortable around people. I prefer to be alone. People are difficult. Your rules are for simple housekeeping. Hoarding is a much bigger and broader problem. I don't know what the solutions are but it's not "bring one in, throw one out". And here is one more thing: if I was rich and lived in a mansion, I would have separate rooms for each category of my junk, and people to organize it for me. I could own ten super yachts (you all know who I'm talking about) and no one would consider me a hoarder. They'd consider me successful.

What beyond your loved ones, pets, and POSSIBLY keys and wallet would be worth grabbing in a house fire? Why would a second-hand item be there days later? More realistic would be how to decide in the moment about a one-of-a-kind sale item, to point out that people are more important than things, and including ideas for how to cope with limited energy--a major cause of clutter--to do things in small segments that don't leave piles behind.
